[ the video clicks on with a flash of something bright and red and orange before it clears and there's a blonde-haired girl wearing a black bodysuit and looking very worried and confused. she's speaking, muttering to herself: ]

Is this on -- I think so... I can see myself, but I don't know if it's even pla -- Oh. Oh. I can see the like, little red -- oh god, that means they can --

[ she cuts herself off and yelps a little before putting a hand to her chest, taking slow deep breaths, furrowing her brows and trying to calm down. she's wigged out and she's scared and she wants out. ]

Oh my god. I -- uhm. [ gulp ] Hi. My name is Liz Allan. Lizzie, I guess. I'm -- I'm new. I have -- [ she counts on her fingers ] -- four questions.

One. Is this... like, computer thing fireproof? Two. Are we --- are we really, seriously on a turtle? I guess I saw since no one actually told me, but... There are no turtles that like, grow this big. Otherwise it'd be all over the news on something.

Three, has anyone seen -- er... two of my friends? Jea -- Karen Grant [ she still doesn't know which to refer to her as ] and Derek Morgan? Please let them know I'm here. [ not that Jean won't figure out herself if she's here too ]

And finally, this... has to be a dream, right? A hallucination? Because this is so crazy and unreal that it can't --

[ and the feed cuts ]

I don't think it's Purgatory. It's like that one book about the New Yorker who gets dragged to a medieval king's court and had to help fix things before going back home. Things turned out alright in the end.

[at least she looks like she's calming down.] Hope's a good thing. It can get kind of crazy at times, but it's not so bad.

[ the closest she's probably heard of was that martin lawrence movie lbr. but she continues. ]

Nevermind. As long as it came out okay for that dude. [ a beat ] Everyone else seems so calm... Like they've gotten used to this place.

[The character was actually from Connecticut, but Toro's from New York. You see "Yankee" and that's what stays with you.]

You realize pretty early on that it's easier to learn and work around the weird stuff. Better to go with the flow. [Then there's a quirk in his smile.] And I think most of us are used to weird.

Yeah, so I think I'm beginning to notice. [ she shifts in her seat, resting her cheek against her palm, still curled up. ]

You said that after we save the world, we get to go home, right?

[He nods a bit.] Think that's how this works. Not that I know what we're supposed to be saving the world from yet. I don't know if anyone else does either.

Always with this hero stuff. Why not just bring in real superheroes though, like -- like the Ultimates or Captain America or whomever?

Instead of just like, whatever they can get their hands on.

Ultimates? Never heard of them. But I sure know Cap! [All of three of them.] He's here on the turtle.

And who says that you're not a superhero? Anyone can be a hero if they're given the chance. Maybe they see something they need in each of us.

W-wait, really? How do you not know the Ultimates then if he's -- [ a beat ] He must be an Ultimate, right...?

[ she rubs her neck, frowning ]

I'm like, so not. I don't want to do that hero stuff, okay? [ what she does on ultimate x is different ]

He's an Invader, not part of any Ultimates. I know in the future he works with something called the Avengers, but that's it. [Maybe she's from another of those alternate universes.]

Just because you don't want to be a hero doesn't mean you aren't one, you know? Being a hero is just about helping people and doing the right thing when it's not the easiest thing to do.

I've never heard of the Avengers before. Is this another one of those -- like, alternate... whatevers? Because unless the president's on some secret team, I don't really --

[ she sighs and shakes her head. this is giving her a headache. still, she manages to crack a smile ]

You sound like a fortune cookie.

[Toro laughs then.] Guilty as charged. Cap's definitely not...president. Even though I bet if he ran he'd win by a landslide.

[He's a little sheepish.] Sorry for the preaching, Pappy was always good for sayings like that. I picked up a few.

No one was really surprise when he got sworn in, that's for sure. [ but she hasn't been living in the us anyways so w/e ]

N-no, I don't mind! I -- [ she twirls her finger around a lock of her hair ] -- I think it's cute.

[Toro is a bit surprised and his face flushes just a bit. Did some young girl just call him cute?]

Hehe... [He scratches the back of his head with a smile.] Thanks. I'll be sure to pass the sentiment on to him, too. If he ever shows up.

You'll have to introduce me if he does.

[ a beat and she turns a little red ]

Oh -- oh, I'm Liz. I mean, I said that already, but like, you know.

I'm Toro. [His grin a is a bit cheeky.] Guess you could call me one of those "hero types," too.

[As if he wasn't being obvious enough about it.]

[ she laughs a little under her breaths ]

What's your superhero name then, huh? What do you like, do?

Toro is my superhero name. [He chuckles.] There wasn't much of a need to have another one back then. Not everyone did.

[Not everyone = Toro and Bucky.]

Back in the day they used to call me the "Flaming Kid," but I'm a little old for that now.

Back in the -- back in the day? [ HOW OLD ARE YOU FRIEND she squints ]

"The FLaming Kid"?

Yeah, it was about ten years or so ago for me when I first started out, but if you know about Cap's...past, then it must have been a lot longer for you. It was last I knew, but for a lot of people here it was already the 21st Century.

[And then he snaps his fingers, letting a little flame dance over them open his hand to dissipate it.]

[ she blinks. taking it all in. she hadn't really made the connection until now but that must mean

damn he's really old!!

there's a beat as she watches the fire thing and without saying a word, she raises her own hand and snaps her fingers, imitating the little fire ]

[He's not that old; he's only twenty-five! He just...ages slowly.

His eyes widen a bit and he is so excited.]

Criminy, I thought I saw some heat there earlier! I've never met a girl Torch before, you know.

[ she blushes. hard. out of embarrassment, mostly, but the whole mutant thing is still a little frustrating for her. ]

I'm not -- I'm not like, Johnny or whatever. I'm -- [ she cuts herself off, shoulders rising to her ears and head sinking ]

[Why is she shrinking back like that? Was it something he said?]

Johnny? That Storm guy? No, no, I was talking about us, my partner and I. Pappy is the Human Torch where I'm from--there isn't even any Johnny Storms around. [That he knows of.]

I'm not like him either. I was born with my powers--well, some of them. I'm a Torch, he's a Torch, too, I guess, and so are you. Doesn't matter how you got your powers. What counts is setting yourself on fire to save the world. [He means the last bit as a joke.]

[ liz pauses, dragging her fingers through her curls and smiles a little. toro manages to get a lot of those out of her.]

I'm called -- um -- Firestar.

Firestar? Oh, that's a dandy. I think it suits you. [He is already adopting her into the Torch family in his mind.]

Not sure how much secret identities matter here, but code names always sound cooler when you're having to plan things out, don't they?
