[Someone looks particularly contemplative today. She's got Captain Squeaks on the desk beside her, and he's just sort of sniffing around at her elbow while Shepard absently scritches behind his little ears.]

For a long time, I thought a few more people from my world showing up here would probably be a good thing. [She rubs at the back of her neck.] After all, fighting a war against an ancient, unknown evil is... kind of what we were doing back home, and my crew? They're all really good at what they do. They're the best.

But having them here, I don't know. Knowing they could disappear at any time? All that uncertainty... The coming and going. Maybe it's better this way. I believe I'll make it back, eventually. I'll see them again then.

We all will.

Maybe. I'm not so sure I want to go home, anymore.

I can see why some people might prefer to stay here. It probably depends on the world, and the situation.

But I have to believe that those of us who want to, will at least get the chance to go back, eventually.

I mean, I'd -- love to see my family again. [There's a beat, and she swallows hard here.] And Harry. But. Yeah. Situations.

A friend, maybe? A partner, you met here?

...That, yeah, but -- I kinda found out what's coming when I get back home. It's more than a little terrifying.

Oh, I see.

[Shepard pauses a moment, thinking.]

I've seen my future, too. I can understand... wanting to put it off. Mine isn't that great, either.

[War. The deaths of billions, trillions. But - she's sort of known that for a while, known it was coming.]

Sorry to hear that. [Yeah, the thing about Molly's is thaat she hadn't even expected it. Not like she looks forward to becoming a possibly evil terrifying faerie princess.]

At least we have something, um, constructive to do here anyway?

Yeah, I don't know what I'd do with myself if we didn't have something to do. There's a goal.

Yeah, but we haven't made much progress with it yet.

We will.

Sure hope so, otherwise we're all screwed.

We'll find a way. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that people working together can always find a way, no matter the odds.

...Yeah. I know. Sometimes it's just, uh. Rough.

[Shepard gives a rather mirthless laugh.]

That's one way of putting it, yeah.

[Molly just gives her a bit of a thin smile in return.]

Figured I'd be polite.

It was a good effort. [She smiles at the younger girl, almost sadly.]

Well gee, thanks. [That smile disappears after a moment, and she just looks -- far more tired than her 21 years really should be.]

So what kinda impossible odds have you been facing, lately?

A race of ancient, sentient machines out to destroy all galactic civilization. [She says that without much inflection in her voice at all, a dry recitation of fact.]

So, you know. Just a day ending in "y".

....Sounds like our kind of days. Except minus the galactic and machines, you can replace those with vampires, I guess.

Seems like a lot of us are in similar positions, even if the specifics might be slightly different.

I guess this place has a fondness for us.

It makes sense. We are here to fight a war.

I mean, I wouldn't mind having a few of you back with me in my world, too, though I don't have the means to bring anyone there.

Yeah. [She shifts her weight a bit, looking down. She's already fighting a war at home, she doesn't quite like the idea of having to fight one here, but it's better than having Mally show up in Chicago along with all the other black hats, right?]

....You're from space, right? If you cam back with me, Harry and I would probably bust all your shiny tech-y things up pretty quickly. It's kind of a thing.

I wouldn't force anyone, anyway.

[She smiles a little.] 'Kind of a thing'?

Well, good, 'cause I have worlds to be saving and stuff.

[She shrugs, there.] We have magic. It messes with technology. Harry can't even be near a GPS without it going haywire, really.
