[Costigan sounds entirely calm and collected, albeit his usual gruff self.]
I need a weapon. A gun or a knife, nothin' weird. I'll pay cash.
[There's a muffled knocking noise for a moment before he speaks again.]
Cigarettes too.
[PRIVATE TO VALDIS]
[His voice shifts, holding more anxiety.]
We need to talk. Privately, not at the station.

Private
Give me a location.
Private
Re: Private
Private → Action spam
[And he is. Costigan waits at a small, two-person table off to the side of the bar. He nurses the beer in front of him, waiting for Valdis to arrive, wondering how completely insane he is to even consider something like this in the first place, let alone agree to it. Part of him hopes Valdis shuts him down, while at the same time expecting and hoping she'll agree.]
Re: Private → Action spam
Action spam
[He's a considerate person, generally speaking. Costigan takes a sip of his own beer, as if to emphasize the potential, waiting for her reply. He'll wait until she either rejects the idea or orders one before he leans forward, resting his forearms on the edge of the table, and continues quietly. He's not one for small talk and jumps right in.]
I want your legal permission to go undercover.

[Drinking didn't do anything for her anyway. She blinks slowly at his words, tipping her head slightly, with a short, amused smile on her face.]
You want to go undercover.
[It was a statement, not a question.]
With whom?
[That was a question]
no subject
[He crosses his arms on the table's edge, feeling defensive with the way Valdis looks at him. None of this is funny to him. Hell, he's still not entirely sure why he's even considering it, let alone actually going through with it.]
Last week, a kedan walked up and asked me if I was a cop. I think I knew him when I was undercover before. If that's true, there's a chance I still have connections here.
no subject
You may still have connections, but the Cultists will never accept you. They hate us. You'd have to give them something really important to even start a conversation and even then the chances of you ending up dead in a back alley is fairly high.
[She didn't know that for certain, but she didn't like the fact that even a sliver of chance.]
What's your entry plan?
no subject
I don't expect to be a full cultist, but I can make myself invaluable to them. I start with a gang. I don't know which one yet. Didn't bother looking into it because I don't know if you'll say yes and I don't like wasting time.
[Costigan sits back in his chair, arms still crossed and voice still low.]
I know you don't know me that well, but I'm pretty damn good at what I do. You don't want to give me the resources of the department, fine. You do? I'll do my best to make it worth your time. Either way, my ending up dead isn't your concern. Besides, the way I understand it, we're all a bunch of clones that can't die.
no subject
Actually, considering I'm the chief of police who is authorizing this little endeavor, I'd say that you ending up dead is very much my concern.
[Especially because it would most likely be followed with swift and ruthless vengeance, revival or no. She sighed heavily.]
no subject
[It was said without much malice, though Costigan was definitely frustrated with her.]
You giving the green light doesn't make you any more responsible for my life or death. Don't give yourself so much credit. You'd be responsible for the consequences to the community my actions might have. That's it. If you giving me the okay means being responsible for anything that happens to me? Tell me now and I'll walk away and do it without the department's support. I'm not looking for some fuckin' controlling oversight bullshit. All I'm asking for is your permission.
no subject
You'll have to make a show of it. Breaking ties with us.

[Since his visit to the prison below the old jail a few days ago, he'd remembered a lot about the man he respected and used to work for. It was good work, even if it wasn't honest. Costigan dropped his hands into his lap, leaning slightly forward again.]
There's a detective. Sherlock. He wants information too. You trust him?
no subject
[She hummed softly.]
What kind of crime were you thinking?
no subject
I have a history of assault. [He admitted lightly.] Maybe I hit you, you stab me. Claim it's about you trying to force me into being a rat. Create the falling out that way. Otherwise, I can beat the shit out of a low level lackey and hope they decide I'm more valuable alive than dead.
no subject
I'm sorry, that first one probably won't work.
no subject
[He shrugged. It vaguely annoyed him that she wouldn't entertain the idea of herself being hurt for the sake of the cause, but it wasn't something he was ready or willing to push. Costigan could find other options. It would look better to be arrested by the kedani police than by the foreigners anyway.]

Kaliel. Yeah, sure. I'll find him and I'll sucker punch him. A few weeks, maybe. Give me time to look into the gangs and what I need to do.

[In Boston, he'd done longer. Here, he was hoping they would be a little more lenient. He could do that much time, if it got him what he wanted.]
no subject
[And shouldn't be too hard to pull off}
Though that might give you a bit less credibility with the gangs.
no subject
[Namely because he's already on some and will have to suffer the withdrawals of those before he even gets arrested. And he's not about to pretend to know what a new drug is like. It's way too big a gap in his knowledge that someone else can easily exploit.]
no subject
Just don't damage Kaliel too badly, I still need him...
