Yes, metalbending's a sub-school and usually not taught unless a bender has mastered their element first and even then they have to have a head for it. Like waterbending can have healing properties, but not all waterbenders have it in them to do it. [Korra can't help but feel how complicated the answers to that question is.] Sandbending is a variation of earthbending, but it works a little differently. I can't use it a little, but not that much. Lava is something only the Avatar can do I think since it uses both earthbending and firebending. I've never even tried it.
