[ Malicant is a stupid name. And yet one that no one seems to want to say for some superstitious fear that names have a certain power over people and saying its name would summon the damn thing to them. Nonsense of course but to keep people from jumping on his back about it he won't even start to say the name. ]

What was that thing? The enemy, clearly, but what kind of creature? It seems interested in the eggs so I was thinking maybe a snake?

If you have any helpful information regarding this place I'd be really grateful if you could share. And I already know we're on a turtle. That's irrelevant.

[ If not for the fact he spent most of his time with an unnamed fear hanging just over his head he might have been a little more nervous about that announcement but instead it only piqued his interest. ]

It is not a thing that has any form--at least, not one that it prefers to take over anything else.

It doesn't have a form at all, or just not one that anyone's aware of?

I mean to say it does not have a--set form, perhaps, or one that it favors; it shifts in size and texture, although when I saw it, it looked nearly human.

So then what is it?

[He makes a frustrated, oddly rumbling noise at that.]

It is--a force, I suppose, or a spirit. Something very powerful, and very old, and very hateful, which cannot be contained within something as limiting as a body.

Well...I haven't the foggiest about a creature and a few eggs. I was too busy enjoying myself to car about that, so no new information there.

[He shrugs a little.]

Is there something in particular you want to know about this place?

If it doesn't have a physical form it can't be defeated and we're all wasting time.

Several things. But if you haven't been paying attention, I doubt if you could help.

Oh, so he can learn. Shocking.

We are on the last surviving turtle in this world. That the threat attempted to kill not that long ago.

And the eggs are not just any turtle eggs. They are, basically, the last hope for this world. If they can be kept alive that long, that is.

[Never mind that was what he himself had thought, after encountering Malicant in person; to hear it from someone else pricks at his conscience, and he draws himself up, ruff flaring indignantly.]

There are plenty of people here who have fought spirits; I do not see how this one is any different from the others, except perhaps bigger. We have fought ghosts before, on the turtle, and I am not afraid to do it again.

[If his voice wavers a little, he covers it well.]

I pay less attention to the boring parts. That doesn't mean I will not be able to answer a question or two. You should be glad anybody is even offering that.

[This could very well end up being a waste of time, but what can it hurt?]

[ It's getting really difficult to play nice with ghosts brought into things. Ghosts. Seriously, ghosts? ]

That doesn't make any sense. You can't fight something that doesn't have a physical form because it doesn't have a physical form and it can't exist without a physical form.

Then you'll miss the whole picture. "The little things are infinitely the most important."

[ Yes he is quoting Sherlock Holmes. It's a thing he does. ]

I said I already know about that giant turtle.

But anyways, how are turtle eggs going to save the world?

Fact one: all life here comes from the turtles.

Fact two: this turtle is the last one living.

Fact three: all things die in the end, and this turtle is getting old, by his own words.

What else will save the world if not young turtles?

[Oh, yes, he knows the kid will argue. Especially the first fact. But that's one they've felt demonstrated, after all.]

[A noise of faint impatience.] But surely you have been to Sinbrilee by now? The city is all over ghosts; you might explain to them, perhaps, how you think they do not exist.

Sometimes the whole can be chock full of uninteresting information.

[Balthazar does not miss that reference. Though it can be a little time consuming, he does brush up on his mysteries every now and then.]

Sherlock Holmes...not a bad role model really. I could think of worse things to be intrigued by. Do you fancy yourself a detective?

What kind of information were you looking for?

Look, I'm well aware the extinction of one species can heavily impact the environment-I don't spend all my time researching environmental science but I do pay attention.

I'm not sure how bad the extinction of turtles would be, but where I'm from at least, it wouldn't be world-ending. Though who's to say about a world entirely different from mine.

Do you know anything regarding the history that guy no one says the name of?

Yup! Conan Edogawa-named after Arthur Conan Doyle.

They don't exist in my world.

However, even "ghosts" are said to have some kind of form for those that believe in them-the reason the mess up electronics, supposedly-is because of electromagnetic waves.

[Even more of a fan than he thought. Nothing wrong with that. Sherlock is something of a hero to some. Not to him, but there could be worse icons.]

Die hard fan then. Do you solve complex mysteries? Murders?

[He certainly looks like a child. Looks are deceiving though. Any angel will be suspicious given the nature of obtaining vessels.]

Of course it would not end the world . Merely all life on it.

Oh... well, not yet. But I do live at a detective agency, so I'm learning! Mostly it's just neighborhood cases, however I am pretty well known back home for facing off against an internationally wanted thief.
