Summer 01

[when it clicks on, have a face full of dirty red headed kid. She looks absolutely delighted by the fact that the console works, and her words seal the deal]

Holy shit, this thing really works?! This is so fucking cool! So, I turned this on and everyone else can hear me, right? This thing’s like a mass phone call or… Oh, wait. Is this what it was like being on TV?

[she pulls out a book from her backpack]

Well, I’m reading a book about anti- gravity… It’s impossible to put down. Pfff. Okay, okay, I won’t read my good ol’ pun book to everyone, but if you ever need a joke, let me know.

Also, I’m looking for someone. His name’s Joel, he’s kind of older, brown hair, talks with a pretty thick Texas accent.

And if anyone knows where I can find a bunch of books in English, that’d be awesome. Last place I went to, they were all in this fucking weird script! No good if you wanna actually read something, you know?

[Julie didn't want to catalog differences in Zombies and Fungi Infected. She's only just started getting control over nightmares and is sure Ellie would appreciate the topic avoidance. Not that Julius would never talk about it. She's just willing to wait for the right time and that is entirely Ellie's decision.]

Nothing like back home, that's for sure. I have yet to find anything even remotely burger-like.

But what they do have is delicious. I made myself sick on pastries the minute I had none. It was so worth it.

[The emotion that runs through him is a familiar one: disappointment that the girl has never met a talking dragon before, mitigated almost entirely by her enthusiasm at having met one now. He extends a wingtip casually, turning a little to better show off the way the lights of Fire Sector dance across his black scales, and tries very hard not to preen.]

Why, yes, I am; I am called Temeraire, and it is very nice to meet you. Might I ask your name?

Oh, my God. We have to make that happen. It's been years.

[Julie would understand. She's been doing a lot of that herself. Things in memory of people back home, alive and dead. It makes her miss theme a tiny bit less.]

[Ah books, Clara loves books and is fond of people who also love books.]

I've got a small stack. What's your opinion on Steinbeck and Austen?

[A light shake of the head.]

No. They're named after different elements. There's Earth, Metal, Water, Fire, and Wood.

Only some of the most brilliant writers in the English language. Science-Fiction is clever but there's plenty more to be read.

[Clara went to university for Literature. She has some feelings about it.]

Oh, yes, I thought you sounded like an American: I had not met many colonials before I came here, but there are a great many of you on the turtle, from places like New York, and California, I think.

[Listen to him try so hard to sound knowledgeable about the US.]

But what has happened to Boston? Why is it not Boston, any more?

That would make sense.

I get books over at the Metal Sector. They have more variety.

[He tenses, slightly, at the mention of an infection, and his ruff flattens against his neck.]

But why did the military attack Boston? What sort of infection was it?

Being on TV's a lot more boring. You don't get the back and forth.

[Bart shrugs at this.]

Anyway, most of the books here are in the native language. Javert's got a copy of the penal code in English. Hey - is that anti-grav book in English? Can I read it? It'll only take a sec.

[There is a small pause, before he apologetically tacks on.]

I don't think there's anybody named Joel here.

You can walk. It takes a while, but it's not so bad if you're used to it.

[Which Midii clearly is.]

Be careful about how much you spend right away. They're not going to give you more. You have to work for it.

I am not sure I take your meaning: do you mean the fungus spread across the city, like a mold?

[He knows how things spoil, on a ship; perhaps that is what she means, and his visions of a plague are entirely unfounded.]
