Oh, hey...this log...

I don't have to do that here, do I? Well, alright, that makes things slightly easier and less formal, but I guess I have to explain things again... (Not like he has been formal or proper in any of his past logs, anyway?) So, the name's Mark Watney and I'm deciding to go with the quick explanation, so if something doesn't make sense - just ask, I don't want to have to try to think of every single thing right now...

Basically, where I'm from...that version of Earth, anyway... we've been going to Mars for a little while, about 2 missions completed and mine and then at least two more after that - if they don't cancel the missions - and basically a series of weird circumstances happened coupled with a set of weird circumstances that somehow lead to me surviving - I got myself stuck on Mars. Yeah, stuck. They thought I was a dead man, but nooooo I have to like a cat with the whole nine lives thing. Or a zombie. Or some other thing... zombie would be pretty sweet, though. But not like the whole romantic comedy type.

(Mark actually tries to chuckle and manages it but he's just going to sit there and wince at the same time. Note to anyone who asks? Body slamming a detached airlock hurts after the third time, same with being thrown around like a rag doll - do not recommend if you can avoid it.) In any case, I was kind of in the middle of a situation before I woke up here and my face plate kind of got f....messed up. Sh...crap, it's not sinking in that I don't have that thing here with me. It's back in the rover. That's going to be really, really bad if I figure out how to get out of here and back to the red dusted hellhole.

(He frowns.) Well, at least it was sealed, I guess and even if I come up with a plan it's not like I'm gonna remember it, anyway, right? (But, what else is he going to do? Sit and twiddle his thumbs all day? Nah, that just sounds lame.)

In any case, you have no idea how glad I am that there are other people here. No idea at all.

(It hasn't been a day at a carnival, that's for sure.)

(Mark's eyes, even if he is internally cursing that red ball of rust desert out and calling it out on its difficulty in just leaving him alone light up at the fact someone is acknowledging that it was cool.

Minus getting stuck, minus the fact Mars was an incredibly fickle and deadly PITA, but come on...

Okay. It's not really that cool now and it wasn't like he was even among the first.

But, still, the kid's excited about this and honestly, being away from the situation goes give him some of his appreciation back, some - he thinks.)

Yeah, can't say many people have that done that, right? Only 18 total where I'm from. Pretty sweet, huh?

Hurt? (Obvious. He can't help but let his sass flag fly.) Nah, getting tossed around in an airlock was nothing compared to the antenna impaling me.

(Okay, he's snarking but he's not lying. Even so? He's making light of this. He also conventionally leaves out the part about having to body slam the airlock over and over to get it to move closer to the rover.

Think hamster ball.)

Just a bit sore, but nothing I can't handle at this rate.

Alone? (He shakes his head.) No, I wasn't. There was a crew of 6. I just happened to have the worst luck in history and some bad things happened and the crew left me behind. Thought I was dead.

[She frowned. Strongly displeased with that news, though it was less upsetting and more of...a kind of annoyance. Like the whole situation was more inconvenient than dire to her.]

They should have returned to retrieve you once your status was made known. I am...sorry for your circumstances.

You know, where I'm from, NASA is still years away from getting to Mars. They're not even really talked about manned expeditions yet.

(He is going to look confused and unsure at her mentioning that.)

You, mean, like a doctor's guild or the magic-kind of guild?

(Sure, he's a fan of magic games and things. But if this turns out to be magic as opposed to the medicine he is used to- he's going to be a bit, well, "Thanks, but no thanks" towards that. Perhaps until he actually sees it.)

Exactly where? (Well, that could be worse news. Bypassing it and things being fixed would have been awesome, but alright - at least he won't have to get tossed around in an airlock a second time.) Yeah, I suppose it could be a lot worse. Sleeping in the rover, yeah, that won't be terrible.

The face plate...I don't have the helmet with me, right now. I fell asleep with it off and I had to use this stuff to seal it. I'll probably have to swap it out with one of the ones that was left behind.

The rest of me is just sore. Nothing I can't handle.

(It just hurts, he probably royally bruised himself from that last incident. Also falling asleep in a rover probably didn't help matters.)

Well, if you got any questions about how they pulled it off where I'm from...I can definitely try to answer them.

Well, it's not as simple as being able to turn the ship around in their case and no one was really aware that I lived until it was too late. (Mark frowns.) Kind of doesn't help much when there wasn't a way to directly communicate with them. Took a while just to get back to the guys in charge and then they didn't want to tell them.

Said some sort of thing like "It would distract them" or "There would be some sort of conflict", because yeah sure I would totally take the situation out on them...

It's kind of hard to blame them for leaving. It wasn't safe. (A pause.) Thanks, but we're trying to figure out how to get me back, so there's that...

It's not? [She seemed genuinely surprised at that for a moment, before realizing her error:] Ah...my apologies. When you spoke of space travel, it did not occur to me that your world may still be primitive in their interplanetary technologies.

[And to Aya's credit, she was honestly embarrassed by it. Often did she take for granted that the people she knew here either weren't familiar with space travel at all, or were as well versed as she. It was rare for her to come across someone in between.]

But otherwise, you have been...well?

[SUCH puns. ]

So it's not like you're bleeding horribly or anything? Because that's a good thing. No one wants that.

You don't have to apologize for anything. (Mark gives a small smile. He's not mad or upset in any way.) It didn't cross my mind that other places might be way ahead of us...though, I watched enough movies and TV growing up that maybe I should be more open to that idea.

(Basically, he's in a similar state. Someone just explained that were they were from that NASA existed but no where near where travel to Mars.)

(A pause. He wasn't expecting that question. If he was being honest? He supposes that he could have been doing better before now, but he was breathing and still in one piece.

He has to give himself a moment before eventually.) Yeah, I suppose so. I could be doing a lot worse, anyway. It's not like I'm missing any limbs, I'm bleeding, or experiencing decompression...

(Unless something horrible is actually happening or still happening and he's unconscious and this is a dream.

No, no. Not bleeding or anything like that. It's not like I got impaled this time. (Thankfully for everyone else on the Turtle, that is.) Just tossed around like a rag doll.

[Her concern was genuine. Besides, there was little reason for one to walk around in less than 100% condition when there were several options to seek aid with. Medicinally, Scientifically, or...Magically, if it had to come to that.]

(Mark has to wince again and he tries to laugh it off.) I'll probably just be horribly bruised and a bit sore, but there's no point in acting like it's anything concerning. I had to pull something impaling me out before so this is what I call "the small stuff".

(Perhaps, it's the long time of isolation and having to take care of everything on his own, even if he was hurt, that makes him not willing to admit that he probably should still be looked at to make sure it wasn't anything worse.)

Also, I need to note that I do not recommend falling asleep in the driver's seat of a fancy version of a small van...

I know some basic procedures if it comes down to it.

[Which was probably a good thing, given she was the navigator of her team.]

You don't require sleep? Really?

(If he knew that? Mark would probably agree that not needing to sleep would be useful when it came to being a navigator.)

Not in the same sense that most carbon-based life forms do. Occasionally, my systems do mandate updates that could require me to shut down for a short duration of time. But I possess no regular sleep cycle.

[Useful, but also boring when everyone one else was passed out for several hours at a time, leaving you all alone.]

You ain't the only one who's been trapped on another world.

[Although his was magical and he wasn't entirely alone so it's not quite the same.]

You figure out a way to fix the situation while you're here and you make sure you remember. Not that hard.
