009; console; video
[Raine has spent much of her week attempting to handle several things at once, and as a result she looks both tired and slightly harried when she appears on video. All the same, there's something she hasn't handled which needs now to be outsourced.]
I'm looking for a Foreigner who arrived here a week or two ago. He's about a head taller than I am-- broad shoulders, auburn hair, carries a single longsword. His name is Kratos.
Should you see him, please don't try to apprehend or otherwise attack him. Simply inform him that I need to speak to him.
[She doesn't know why he's avoiding her. Although she has her suspicions, to confirm any of them would require talking to Kratos and finding out when he's from. Raine hesitates, then adds, very carefully:]
Depending on his point of origin, I may have some messages to relay to him from Lloyd.
...Thank you.
[And back to work. Perhaps this will bear fruit.]

[Probably he wouldn't lie, but if he's telling people Zelos can't be trusted, better to nip that in the bud right away.]
I may have done something he misunderstood, that's all. Nothing to worry about. Not until we find him, anyway.

[Pepper leans forward, grinning slyly at Zelos, and speaks in what might be a conspiratorial whisper.]
Did you try flirt with him, too?
no subject
[When people, especially women, lean in to whisper something, Zelos usually likes what they have to say. This, though? If he were drinking something, he'd be choking.]
With Kratos? Are you insane? No! You've met the guy -- does he seem like someone anyone would flirt with? Ever? Seriously, some days I don't understand how the hell he has a son.
[Deep breath.]
No, I did not try to flirt with Kratos. But now I need to wash my mouth out. With soap. Thanks for that.
[SO VERY NOT HERE]
Anna was perfectly okay flirting with him, tyvm =|][SO VERY NOT HERE]
Anna was obviously insane from being a prisoner most of her life][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[are you seriously and honestly trash-talking his wife, Chosen?][SO VERY NOT HERE]
One woman in four thousand years, Kratos. One woman in four thousand years.][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[he wasn't looking =| it doesn't count when he wasn't looking.][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[See, this looks like flirting. Would you two like a room after all?][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[you, young lady, are demonspawn. he oughta know. he's been to a hell dimension and everything.][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[Aw, Kratos. She didn't know you cared.][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[yes, that is exactly the point of not talking to anyone ever.][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[That's okay. She can talk enough for the both of them.][SO VERY NOT HERE]
[SO VERY NOT HERE]
whatever helps you sleep at night
]or doesn't, as the case may be
[SO VERY NOT HERE]
[he doesn't sleep.
[... shut up.]

You are very welcome. And seeing as we met while he was rescuing someone, he's got at least a few decent qualities that someone could take interest in. Someone obviously did, if he has a kid. Plus, he's not half bad looking.
[Her own sort-of boyfriend wasn't exactly the type anyone would expect flirting or dating to be a thing with, and yet.]
If it wasn't flirting with him that was the possible problem, what was it?
no subject
And what are you doing ogling someone? You have a jealous boyfriend, remember?
[Ugh, this whole thing's making him feel sick. Moving on.]
Oh, I had to pretend to betray his son for a while. No big deal.
[STILL NOT HERE]

[Her expression becomes decidedly less teasing when he answers her question. Pepper knows there are certain things that you don't joke about, and there's no way Zelos can carry off that much bravado without it being used to hide something. The feigned betrayal is probably only one piece of the puzzle.]
Yikes. Yeah, that would do it. I've had it from the opposite side - someone pretended we were friends and then tried to kill us and take over the world. [Sorry, Gene. It makes a good example.] We were able to work things out here, and we're friends again. Keeliai is good for that sort of thing.
[And because Pepper always wants to know these things:] Why'd you have to pretend, if you don't mind me asking? I'm guessing it was something pretty important.
no subject
Why did he let himself get sucked into this conversation? Pepper is way too much like Lloyd for laughing this off to work, and the problem is she'll know he was lying the moment she asks Kratos about it.]
You're still friends with someone who tried to kill you?
[There's no surprise in the question, despite Zelos's best effort.
He can hope Kratos doesn't remember what happened after the fight, and take a gamble. It didn't work with Raine, but that doesn't mean it can't work here.]
Nah, I don't mind. [Much.] We were fighting a guy who wouldn't have let me into his stronghold if he didn't think I was on his side. And Kratos's son -- Lloyd? He's a terrible liar.
no subject
[Pepper says this like it explains everything, and in a way it does. Gene may as well be her brother, and he's changed so much since coming to Keeliai.]
Ah. I can see how that might look bad, yeah. That sucks. [He made an executive decision, and couldn't tell anyone about it.] Did it work?
no subject
[Seriously. Whoever she's talking about, they're pretty damn lucky. Hopefully it's easier for them to see their luck than it is for Zelos to see his.]
Raine says it did. [That part's not a lie.] We beat the guy and saved the world. Unfortunately, the Dreaming pulled me out of things before I had a chance to see them through, so... yep. [Careless smile.] Pretty important. Nothing whatsoever to do with flirting.
no subject
[She's a pretty bad liar, even so. She's better at just not saying anything.
Gene does know how lucky he is to have Pepper and Tony in his life now, after everything that happened. They're all lucky, really.]
Well, that's something. I'm sort of in a similar situation - I'm from right before an invading alien ship explodes, but my best friend Tony is from after and said everything turns out as well as it could and we avoid Armageddon. [Something is nagging at her about this, maybe because Zelos is turning more boisterous on an otherwise serious subject. It doesn't feel like he's lying, although he's apparently good at that by his own admission, but it does feel like she's not getting the whole picture.] And it could have had to do with flirting. C'mon, you have to admit it would be funny if it was.
no subject
... No. Like Raine said, she's attached. Zelos's feelings are not allowed to go there. Lloyd was bad enough.]
I don't have to admit anything. Especially when you're wrong. Hey, I have an idea -- let's stop talking about Kratos. Let's talk about whatever we were talking about before Kratos came up.
[There's a pause while Zelos remembers that Kratos is literally the whole point of Raine's post.]
Let's talk about you. How long've you been here?
no subject
But since they're on a public network, and she doesn't know Zelos very well yet, she decides to let the subject drop. For now.]
Oh, good, I'm great at talking about me. [It's said as a joke, but it's also true. She's just good at talking in general.] It'll be two years at the end of May. I was lucky that I wasn't on my own when I got here. It would've been a lot harder to adjust.
