There's actually a lot more variety to serial killers than you might think. It's a fairly common psychological component that some of them kill to prove their superiority to those around them, not only to their victims but also to the law enforcement that in their eyes fail to stop them. They'll sometimes intentionally bait those they feel to be after them with clues or hints as to where they'll strike next or what they're capable of. Often it's that attempt at 'creativity' that leads to their downfall and eventual capture.
