[Suddenly, there's an unfamiliar voice on the network. Young, male, probably prepubescent and very, very familiar to some residents of Keeliai.]

These are some seriously nice digs. It's hard to believe that they have so many rooms "just in case," so I'm guessing this might be little more common than I was lead to believe. Do they employ kedan to wander around the Shell's Edge, plucking people out of the ocean? I wonder what you'd put on your resume: Plucker of Maybe Dead People Out of a Magical Ocean?

[The joke sounds slightly strained, but joking tends to make him feel a little more at ease.]

Anyway, I got the basic rundown from those kedan. Very friendly guys-- at least I think they were guys. But it'd be nice to have confirmation from more than one person. No offense to them, but I like cross-checking my sources.

And while we're on the subject: does anyone know anything about the Emperor? The kedan didn't speak about him too much.

They were picking people up even with the curfew. Maybe it is a job. [ It's getting him to think about it now, since that was a long cart ride... wasn't like they'd had much time before dark after reaching Keeliai. ]

What curfew?

It was lifted the day after I arrived, but they had a curfew because of the gang problems. Everyone had to be indoors at night.

[ It was annoying. ]

That sounds like pretty good advice. Luckily, I missed the gang wars.

So did I. Guess we're both lucky. [ Though Cloud's tone is a bit subdued because honestly, at least if someone was causing trouble, he'd know what to do. Here like this... not so much. ]

Yeah. You don't sound exactly thrilled, though.

[ He shakes his head. ] It's good that it's over. But... [ He trails off, trying to sort out his thoughts to say clearly--and ending up with I don't know what I'm doing here, he was just barely learning how to do a normal life without fighting back home. And the kid isn't here to hear the adults being confused, so that's not getting said. Get it together, Cloud. He just offers a one-shoulder shrug, trying to blow it off. ] Comes with having been a fighter, I guess. I don't like missing a fight.

[ ...definitely switching it over to audio though, now that he feels awkward enough without being on display. ]

Are you a soldier?

[He's asking innocent questions the he doesn't realize are loaded. It's his habit of the day, apparently.]

[ Yeah, he's glad he switched it to audio now because he ALWAYS stumbles over that question. (He tends to hear soldier with capital letters.) ]

Ah... no. My eyes-- [ because the glow's a tip-off to anyone who's known a SOLDIER, it's easy to assume the kid noticed while he had the video on ] --that was an accident. Mako poisoning.

[ It's not really a lie if he just tiptoes around that whole mess. He's had mako poisoning! Twice, even. And it wasn't intentional on his part. ]

I was a mercenary. [ For like, three jobs. But he just wants to get off the question of him being a SOLDIER, so he casts around for something else. ] You know any SOLDIERs?

Your eyes looked fine to me. [But he also works with a Martian, whose eyes are very, very glowy too.]

Not personally, no.

They are. [ But...okay, now he was confused. ] Forget it.

[ Cloud stop solving awkwardness by ditching the topic. ]

You settling in all right? [ Kid. Abooout as old as when they're running off from home to be cannon fodder in the army, but he doesn't sound quite there yet. ]

[Don't think he didn't notice that subject change.]

[ w/e he's subtle like ninja ]

...Good question. [ Well, if he came across a stray kid in Edge-- ] Not hurt, not panicking, and you've got an idea how you're gonna eat for the next week and stay out of trouble. [ Actually, that didn't take much effort to think of at all. ...Probably seen too many displaced people lately. His bar is not terribly high. ]

[Well this guy is really sensible. And sounds like he has a lot of experience.]

Then I'm all right. How about you?

Mm? [ Okay, kid's probably pretty independent if he's turning that question back at an adult. Without an attitude, even. ] All right over here, too.

[ It's really pretty simple if you boil it down to those four things. He can manage that. ...With take-out. ]

Then I guess we're both as well-off as could be expected right now.

The giant bioluminescent turtle might take awhile to get used to, though.

Doesn't look like we have a choice about getting used to it, though.

No, guess we don't. Not until someone figures out a way back. Or what's really going on, at least. I've heard a lot of theories but nothing concrete.

Yeah. The kedan will give you a lot of "emperor's business", so that's a waste of time. [ Another thing that bugs him, but not much he can do when they're not budging. ]

You got that too? I heard the emperor holds open court once a month, but I'm not sure if asking her will do much good either.

When I asked around, yeah. [ He hadn't talked too much on the cart. Too busy indulging stirrings of motion-sickness. ]

It's her "business". Might as well take it to her. [ And even if he hasn't found options besides "get used to it yet", it doesn't make him particularly happy about doing that. ]

Mind telling me how that goes? It's more efficient if we don't all ask her the same questions, after all.

[He's not particularly happy about the "deal with it" attitude he's gotten so far either.]

Got a name? [ He needs some way to get in touch after all. ]
