Audio - Backdated to 7/30
[Audio only is rare for Toph. Usually she doesn't even bother to toggle the settings; it doesn't matter to her whether she's seen or not. But today, right now . . . it's audio only, and her words come out hard and flat.]
Last night I had a dream. About a kid with a woman who was teaching him to earthbend. He pretty much sucked at it.
He was wearing a soul gem.
[There's a pause. For a long moment she says nothing else. But the silence is almost tangible in its thickness.]
He was home. My home.
[There's an undercurrent that runs through the words here, dark and weighted.]
[It's rage.]
((ooc: Toph can only "see" through seismic sense, so although she dreams, she still doesn't see images in the traditional sense -- and can't see color. So for ooc puzzlings, I shall pass on that the boy's hair shifted colors in the dream in case it's important and matches up with anything else.))

[Tony looks unsettled, and a little uncomfortable.]
There was a kid with a soul gem too, and my dad was talking to him. I couldn't hear what he said. The kid, his... skin changed colors? Like camouflage. I think he must have been kedan.
[He pauses for a few seconds, then slowly adds,] It's like they changed places with us, isn't it? When those kedan got soul gems - maybe the gems don't just "tie" your soul to a universe. Maybe they're part of how our souls get transported.

[The words are small and sullen. Toph's never been the sort to mince.]
It's not like we had these things at home.
[Might need some more 'splaining, Tony.]

Though... I don't know. There's something different about it. There's been a few different versions of the spell that brings us here. [Which is a can of worms Tony isn't familiar enough with to open - most of that predated his arrival.] But whenever we go home, it's like we've never been gone. When we get pulled home, or when Milyn does that thing that shows you your future at home, we pick up right where we left off.
We don't vanish from home. But the kedan vanished from here. [And Tony doesn't know what to make of that.]

. . . Okay, it's interesting. I'll give you that.
Doesn't mean much of anything to me, though. I don't deal with magic stuff.
[Earthbending does not count as magic, okay? That's normal.]
I guess you'd ask her about it. Milyn.

Yeah, that's a good idea. [The thought has occurred to him, and while he's sure Milyn would have said something if she knew anything about the kedan disappearances, it can't hurt to double-check. And who knows? Maybe these new dreams will mean something to her.] ...do you not like Milyn?
no subject
True.
[And . . . her nose wrinkles. There's silence on her end for a stretch before she answers.]
It's complicated. Don't really know her. Aang says she's good, and that's kind of something, but.

[He's probably being too nosy, but Milyn has always been an ally to the foreigners, and he's curious what Toph has against her. She's definitely odd, and sometimes exhaustingly cheerful - is it just that Toph finds her annoying, or is there something more serious going on?]

. . . I don't know. I'm used to Eshai. And Evandau. They brought us here and never told us anything, but we were still supposed to fight for this place -- couldn't go home until we did. They kept information from us because they told us we couldn't handle it.
Sometimes, at least a few months ago when kedan were disappearing, it kind of felt like Milyn knew something. Like . . . not all the facts lined up. I'm not completely convinced she doesn't know stuff she isn't telling us, especially with all the sunshine and sparkles. At home, my dad was a businessman, and a lot of people came looking for his money and his influence. They sparkled a lot like that too -- all sparkle, and nothing on the inside.
I don't have any proof she isn't being honest. Aang says she is, so that's something, but. This place hasn't exactly given me a lot of reasons to trust it.

I... She's always helped us. She took care of all the foreigners when we were in the dreaming for a year. [He frowns.] She's a little weird, but... she's never given us any reason not to trust her. She's been on our side even when the rest of the kedan didn't want us around. If she knew something, why would she hide it from us? What could she gain from that?
[The business metaphor definitely resonates with Tony - enough to make him uneasy. He's very reluctant to start suspecting Milyn of foul play when he can't see a motive and she's always been so good to the foreigners... but he also knows that just because you can't figure out someone's motive, doesn't mean they don't have one.]

All I do know is she never really answered my questions about the quarantine and the zhyris -- or whatever it is. And especially after this place, it's kind of hard to trust anything that isn't upfront. Or with that much sparkle.
[That's not much and she knows it. She'd never deny it, never discard the possibility that it could all come from her. But she can't get rid of it, either.]

[His expression and tone turn serious again.] Things aren't as bad as they were when Malicant was around, but we still shouldn't be turning on each other without really good reasons. I'm not saying you have to like her - but that doesn't mean she's working against us. I've... made that mistake before, [he admits reluctantly.]
