[A six-year-old appeared on the screen. Barely. There was some movement below, like she was shifting a certain book being used as a booster, before her young face appeared in view once more.]

[That face wasn't happy.]

I don't know what's going on...but I don't like it.

[Then he makes a face. It was kind of a smartass remark, which he's sorry about, because she's a little kid, but he hates not knowing what's going on.]

I mean, you don't either, right? It sounded like you didn't, so I assumed, but do you know?

[She didn't laugh. She didn't even smile.]

[...if he were to pay attention real close, there might have been the slightest glimmer of amusement in her eye. Or that could have been the reflection of the screen in front of her.]

[...Well, he can actually think of a few reasons she might ask, even knowing the answers, but from her response, they don't seem especially likely.]

Yeah. I was on this... computer... thing... [That doesn't behave like any computer he knows.] trying to figure out what was going on, but so far not much luck.

[Probably not, no.]

Maybe it's broken.

[She knew about computers. Enough to figure out the basics. Most children of her time did, even though her family was far too poor to own one. Hers wasn't broken, but that didn't mean somebody else's wasn't. At least, so far, hers was still allowing her to talk to other people. And other kids.]

You should try another one. They have so many of them here. The people who kidnapped us must be rich.

Maybe. I don't see anything really obviously broken, but... it doesn't look a lot like the computers I know. I guess it's something different.

I was thinking I'd have a look around. See what I can find out. There's got to be some clue about why we're here, and what's going on.

[She nodded her agreement. They didn't look like the technology she was familiar with, either.]

How far will they let us walk?

I don't want to make them mad if I go where I'm not supposed to.

[That makes him grin a little.]

Well, the way I see it, someone brought us here against our will, so I'm pretty okay with making trouble for them while we try to find a way home.

[She didn't grin back. Not yet.]

I don't care about them getting in trouble.

But I don't wanna get Papa and my brothers in trouble if they get mad at me.

[He considers that for a moment.]

...Well, I don't have any brothers. Or sisters. And my parents are traveling in South America right now. I don't think they could get into trouble. I could look around and report back, if you wanted?

[That...actually did help her feel a little better. And it showed on her face, which was a little more expressive than her fifteen-year-old self.]

Just be careful, okay? People who kidnap kids are usually really bad people.

[He grinned a little and drew an x over his chest with a finger.]

Cross my heart. I will be the model of discretion.

[For a split second, she got a little too excited.]

[...before realizing that now probably wasn't the time to be happy about her increasing vocabulary. There would be time to brag about her studies later. Hopefully.]

Uh, no? I was just going to go from what I can see in the background on your end and go from there? Why?

[She blinked right back.]

[It wasn't the worse place ever. In fact, one of the clues Tim might note was the view from just outside. Across the street was a small sandwich shop. A shop which would be more than happy to eventually give her a tall glass of water and cookie. Which, if he were to eventually come upon the console cafe, he would see her sitting in her seat eating. Legs swinging lightly back and forth in her seat as she savored the oatmeal raisin-like treat.]

[After a bit of wandering, asking questions as politely as possible, and eventually stumbling across a welcome center which had a lot of informative paperwork, Tim started his hunt for the girl he had seen on the odd computer thing. There was a bit more wandering and asking questions, but eventually he managed to find the console cafe she'd broadcast from, and then her.]

Hi--I'm Tim. I... think I forgot to introduce myself before.

[She was mid-bite when he walked up to her, taking the time she needed to properly chew and swallow to glance him up and down. Slightly suspicious, but not overly so. She...supposed he looked like the boy she'd been talking to before. And he was right; they had forgotten to share names.]

[He pulled out some of the pamphlets he'd picked up at the Welcome Center.]
