[When the feed comes on, Shepard looks thoughtful. The - festival, whatever, that had been a nice break, but frankly, she's still trying to digest everything she learned from the Emperor. The Reapers. War. Death. Everything she's been trying to prevent for the past few years, but also - love, and success.

It's a lot to take in, so it stands to reason she's been withdrawn, even in the face of the happy situation of the past few days.]

I know a lot of people here died back home. So did I.

[Get right to the point, will you? Even if it's a pretty morbid one.]

It was tough to accept. But what was even tougher, at the time, was accepting being back. Accepting that someone thought I was important enough to bring me back, when others - well. What made me so special, I asked. I've been living on borrowed time for a while now, but I dealt with it, because I had a purpose.

I think that purpose might be gone, now. How should I deal with that?

Is not the pleasure of another day of life a purpose?

[That's a concept rather beyond Shepard's ability to comprehend.]

That's not what my life has been about. Keeping other people safe, allowing other people to take pleasure in life.

The two are mutually exclusive to you? It is possible to enjoy life and do one's duty.

I enjoy my job. Or rather, I enjoyed the job I had back home. It doesn't exist here, though. [Yeah, sorry, still a totally alien concept.]

And what was your profession?

A soldier.

Respectable. I was one of HIs Majesty's Guards in my youth. The capital, that is to say, the old capital was quite enjoyable when one is young and unattached.

A king? [Yeah, that's all she got out of that. Needless to say, Shepard has a healthy suspicion of monarchs.]

You find a new purpose. [Finnick shrugs. He gets what she's saying, though. It's how he feels now, living on borrowed time. This is his second chance, but he doesn't really see it that way.] If that's what you need to get you by, find something else to dedicate yourself to.

[And because that's getting too deep, he smirks.] Or just enjoy the pleasures that life can offer you for the time being.

Shore leave is shore leave. This is something different. [She sighs.]

Maybe I'm overestimating my own importance, here. I've gotten used to being the one everyone depends on.

[He arches an eyebrow.] You're someone who doesn't really like to relax, aren't you?

[A shrug.] Nobody's that important here. We're all just players in the Emperor's game.

I know exactly what we are to the Emperor, and I intend to figure this out. Maybe that'll solve my problem. [She's just ignoring the first part of that statement, because seriously, what is with people assuming she needs to relax? If she wants to relax, she'll go to a bar and have a drink.]

You're going to figure out what her game is? I doubt she's going to be willing to play her hand so soon. [He rests his chin in his hand, honestly curious as to how she's going to attempt this.]

She'll slip up eventually. Patience is a virtue. [Seriously bad guys always give themselves away eventually, what kind of universe are you from?

Of course, there's also the fact that Shepard owes her a debt, and god knows that hangs over her head. She's not looking forward to the day the Emperor calls in that favor. She's sure she'll find some way to turn it against her.]

Eventually could be a long time coming, but to each their own. [Finnick shrugs. He comes from the kind of universe where the bad guy was in power for too long. Snow's only slip up was underestimating the hunger the people had for freedom.]

Yes, it could be. The important thing is to know when to act and when to keep quiet for the time being.

[ contemplatively: ] This feels like one of those questions that will never have a good answer.

[There's a slight smile in her voice.] Probably. It's easy to overthink things when you've been someone's overpriced science project.

I think it's easy to overthink things when we're given an awful lot of time to think.

But that's just my opinion.

I've definitely had too much time on my hands, lately. Haven't had this much free time in years.

Maybe you need a hobby.

I'm not exactly a knitting scarves or going fishing kind of person.
