Verse 07 -- Voice

[The feed's just a voice one today. Jehan wants it to be quick and to the point]

I apologize for this announcement, as it could not possibly come at a worse time, but I feel it is my duty as his friend to let others know. If you knew Grantaire, he is no longer here. It is possible that his disappearance is connected to the rapid decay of Asti in these last few days though I do not think that is likely to be the cause.

[Still, you never know.]

It would not hurt to keep in contact with friends here, should this illness lead to more disappearances.

[ He's on Jehan's bed, dangling his legs but not moving them--he's quiet for a while, head turned downwards, surprisingly silent. It isn't until a good 10 minutes after Jehan makes the announcement that Gavroche actually speaks. ]

Y'wanna go throw rocks at people? It made me feel better when 'Ponine, when she left.

[ Still, he doesn't sound very convinced it'll work himself. ]

I'm afraid what would only get you a scolding would land me in prison.

[He turns to face Gavroche]

I did not realize she had left. Was she a friend of yours from home?

[If he was told they're siblings, he doesn't recall]

[ Gavroche has never mentioned it. Understandably, he doesn't talk about his family--the fact that they're Thenardiers only make things worse, really. ]

I ain't know she'd been in the barricades 'till I saw her here, huh? Dressin' like a boy, bein' all good. Moonin' over that Marius guy. I ain't never got a chance to talk to her until here, too. Start over, almost, huh? An' now she's gone...

[ And now Gavroche won't ever be able to connect with her, or the family he never had. ]

...Gavroche?

[Jehan frowns, concerned. He goes to join him on the bed]

What's wrong?

She was m'sister. An' now Grantaire has left, huh? How long 'fore you do, too?

[Oh, poor child.]

They will come back, I am sure of it. It happened with Enjolras, after all. And I swear I will not leave you, Gavroche, nor will I leave any of our friends. I am needed here.

[ Gavroche laughs, but it's hollow and maybe a little reminiscent of Grantaire himself. ] Ain't no one last that long. M'used to it, huh? Comin's and goin's. I just got my hopes up a little too much that we could all... [ He shrugs. 'Stay together,' maybe. He grins as wide as he can. ] Don'tcha worry 'bout Gavroche, huh?

I'm sorry, Gavroche, but I can't do that. I know that you can take care of yourself. However, friends and family still worry over each other and you've--very quickly, I might add--have become a part of mine.

[Especially with that laugh. That laugh worries Jehan as no boy should sound so much like an empty, drunken cynic. He rests a hand on Gavroche's shoulder]

I will worry, Gavroche, the same as I worry over Enjolras and Combeferre and Courfeyrac and Pontmercy.

[Though everyone worries about Pontmercy.]

Gamin don't got no family. [ A pointed look. ] And 'Ponine's dead, huh? We all are, back home. There's nuffin' but here an' now. [ But the smile is less forced--a little. ]

Looks like I gotta have to worry about you guys more. y'can't survive one night outta the suite here, I guarantee it.

[ That's a 'thanks,' Jehan. ]

[Jehan starts to protest before shaking his head]

Because we do not pickpockets or charm money away from innocent young women?

Nah, 'cause you don't know the place like I do. Even this place, huh? You get to learn from it. Y'get to be free. [ Pointedly: ] That's why M'never here and always runnin' off.

Oh, I thought you were always running off because you were afraid I might attempt to force a bath.

[Not that he would, of course, but it's a funny joke all the same]

Or worse.

If I smell bad, I blend in with the rats. [ STUBBORN ]

And have you seen a rat since arriving here? I haven't.

Hey--yeah, Why's this place not have no animals that are like us?

I imagine that since Asti is responsible for our well-being and cannot be stretched too thinly, creatures such as rats and other vermin cannot be supported here. They're of no use to anyone, after all.

They got uses. You can eat 'em if you're hungry.

...that aside, they are largely useless.
