Verse 07 -- Voice

[The feed's just a voice one today. Jehan wants it to be quick and to the point]

I apologize for this announcement, as it could not possibly come at a worse time, but I feel it is my duty as his friend to let others know. If you knew Grantaire, he is no longer here. It is possible that his disappearance is connected to the rapid decay of Asti in these last few days though I do not think that is likely to be the cause.

[Still, you never know.]

It would not hurt to keep in contact with friends here, should this illness lead to more disappearances.

[He doesn't reply. Instead he ends the feed there.

Quite a while later he shows up at Jehan's door. Long enough to make the poet think he's not coming, but not long enough to cause unnecessary worry.... or anymore worry.]

[Jehan opens the door, fumbling a little with the buttons on his waistcoat. He stops when he realizes who's there, however.]

I was beginning to worry. Please, come in.

[He gives a short nod and enters, fidgeting with the cuffs of his shirt.]

My apologies.

I'm afraid I've no tea or wine to offer you, simply water. Will that be enough?

[He gestures to a chair as he heads to his kitchen]

[He takes a seat, continuing to fidget, and shrugs.]

Water is more than alright.

[Jehan gets two glasses and joins Courfeyrac. He hands one to the other]

I'd nearly forgotten what you looked like, mon ami.

Well, I am happy to remind.

[He thanks him for the water and sips on it slowly.]

[Jehan wants to ask what's wrong, but he really doesn't want to press and he's happy just to see Courfeyrac.]

May I ask what has kept you so busy these last few weeks?

[He appreciates Jehan not pressing, really.]

Pontmercy for the most part....

[And when not with him, holing himself up seemed to do the trick. He forced a slight smile.]

Time must have slipped from me, I hadn't realized I was absent for so long.

But what have you been doing? You've not been seen for some time, at least not by our neighbors and others in the city.

[He shrugs, not quite looking at Jehan.]

Keeping busy. I've been watching the communication devices... just not participating much.

Courfeyrac...

[He doesn't say it outright, but it's clear that he's not pleased by half-truths and lies of omission]

Have you been ill?

I have run out of things to distract myself with, Jehan.

[Frustrated with himself? Yes, quite.]

I just need another distraction and I'll be as good as new.

But why do you need so many distractions?

[He knows damn well why. He needs to hear Courfeyrac say it first, however]

[He doesn't mean to glare at Jehan, but he hates that he's going to have to actually acknowledge it out loud.]

So the nightmares will stop.

[Jehan honestly didn't expect Courfeyrac to say anything. He didn't know Courfeyrac had nightmares. When Courfeyrac says it, Jehan's face falls]

Reynaud...

[It was tiresome to keep pushing Jehan away, that was his only reason for saying anything. Jehan's face falls and he glances away again.]

Don't. I'll be fine.

Don't what? You cannot ask me to forget about it--you are too important to me for that! I know that, between the fi--four of us I am the Romantic, who feels everything and hides nothing but that does not mean you--any of you--are required to hide everything.

[Abandoning his cup to the side, he buries his face in his hands.]

I know... I know you're correct.

[He's just going to leave it at that.]

[And Jehan finds himself suddenly tending to another distraught friend in this strange world. The turtle appears to be dying, people are losing their supernatural abilities (which does not comfort him as much as he might have thought), food may very well run out soon...all of that, and emotional distress. If he weren't already dead and a more vain man, Jehan would fear going completely white before he turned thirty.]

If you need a moment of quiet, my flat does have a largely unused second floor with rooms to spare. No matter the time, you are welcome here.

[Precisely the reason Courfeyrac didn't want to burden him. Jehan already had so much he'd worried about... he didn't need an emotionally compromised law student on top of it all.]

I will keep the offer in mind, thank you...

[What remains unsaid is that he likely won't take up the offer.]

Please, Reynaud, use my space if you have need. Don't torture yourself if it can be avoided.

[He nods a little, moving his hands from his face to his cheek.]

If I have need, I will.
