[The video feed pops on to the sight of a dashing- if he might say so himself- man in his seeming mid-thirties, grinning widely at the camera; he has a somewhat period look about him, dressed in a button up, suspenders, and a greatcoat that speaks of war, but there's a spark in his gaze that speaks of mischief. After all, he's taken some time to read through recent activity on the network, and he's come across one very familiar name. It's a name he had not expected to hear again for some time, but if the tone of his voice when he calls it out is any indication, he's not disappointed in the least.]

Rose Tyler: what's a beautiful girl like you doing stuck in a place like this? [Jack gives a cheerful laugh, his grin stretching wide across his face.] It's been awhile. What do you say, you, me, a little celebration for our reunion?

[His eyes all but twinkle, and then he speaks again, addressing not Rose this time, but everyone else.] As for the rest of you; Captain Jack Harkness. [One hand raises in a half salute.] At your service. I'm sure it'll be a pleasure to meet each and every one of you. Until then, I'd love to hear more about this place, this- "In Between" business.

[ sadly nothing in that sentence is a metaphor ]

[Have an eyebrow, Jack, at both the statement and the name. Then he chuckles, shaking his head.] I'd ask if you meant that literally, but I've seen stranger things. Sounds like just the kind of thing she would enjoy, too.

[His smile is mirthful.] Good name, 'Jack.' I don't think I've met a bad one yet, although I have to admit that I'm a bit biased.

She certainly seemed too! And the Wind was pretty pleased as well.

I think we can allow a little bit of bias for that.

The Wind? [Well, it's not the strangest thing he's ever heard. Interesting, though. He shrugs it off.] Then a good time was had by all.

Glad to hear. So, Jack- have you been here long?

About six months. I arrived right before New Years.

It was weird though... it was right after Easter at home. Somewhere between here and there I lost several months.

Could be. [Not a thought he likes.] It could also be just a- difference of timezones, in a way. Depends on where this place really is. And then there's the option of time travel.

Where it really is depends on who you ask. I assume you got the whole "between life and death and dreaming" part of the speech?

Heard it, yes. Believe it: let's just say I'm a natural skeptic. What do you think or the whole thing?

I think being a spirit means my sense of what's "normal" is pretty skewed to start with.

[Jack arches an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by the answer given.] A spirit? As in 'ghost,' or...

Spirit like spirit.

[ He's gotten pretty used to having to explain this difference. ]

Patrons of... stuff? In the world? You have to have heard of some.

[The only true spirits he can think of are the beings that masquerade as faeries, and the corners of his lips turn down ever so slightly. Somehow, he doesn't think that's quite what Jack means.]

I have, but I doubt they're the same thing; the spirits I've encountered kidnapped children, and terrorize and kill anyone they feel that 'threatens' their chosen ones. And sometimes they kill just for fun.

[He'll never forget, finding Estelle dead...]

[ That sobers Jack up pretty quickly. ]

I... sorry.

[Sorry, Jack. He shakes his head, shakes the memory away. It's clear that's not what Jack meant by 'spirit,' the kid's far different than the so called faeries had been. He offers a mild smile again instead.]

There's no way you could have known. I'm guessing that for you, 'spirit' means something better, right?

Yeah, it does. We're kind of like... patrons, I guess. Of different things. Like how I'm the Spirit of Winter.

Sounds intriguing. [And it really does, something evidenced by the interest on Jack's face.] Is there a spirit for everything, or just the big things?

Big things, small things... we're kind of all over the map. And a lot of names that you might have heard and not really thought of as people before? You might want to revise that.

Let me guess- Santa Claus? [It's the first thought that pops into his head.] I always wondered about that. Big legend, across the entire planet, mostly the same, makes you think.

[At one point, he'd even wondered if the myth was based on an alien of some kind, but he'd never found any evidence to back up the theory.]

Got it in one! North's one of the founding Guardians, too.
