When it's hit with the right kind of electrical current, dark energy is manipulated to increase or decrease the mass of objects.
It allows us to do all kinds of things, but probably the most important is near-instantaneous travel to different parts of the galaxy, using devices called mass relays. Kind of like a giant slingshot.
