Summer 01

[when it clicks on, have a face full of dirty red headed kid. She looks absolutely delighted by the fact that the console works, and her words seal the deal]

Holy shit, this thing really works?! This is so fucking cool! So, I turned this on and everyone else can hear me, right? This thing’s like a mass phone call or… Oh, wait. Is this what it was like being on TV?

[she pulls out a book from her backpack]

Well, I’m reading a book about anti- gravity… It’s impossible to put down. Pfff. Okay, okay, I won’t read my good ol’ pun book to everyone, but if you ever need a joke, let me know.

Also, I’m looking for someone. His name’s Joel, he’s kind of older, brown hair, talks with a pretty thick Texas accent.

And if anyone knows where I can find a bunch of books in English, that’d be awesome. Last place I went to, they were all in this fucking weird script! No good if you wanna actually read something, you know?

See you in a bit.

[Julie shuts her feed off and leaves her suite.

It takes her about fifteen minutes to get to the small restaurant. She instantly looks around for Ellie, nor sure if the kid got there yet or not.]

[Yeah. She's so buying this kid some new clothes and some bath supplies. Big sister mode is go. Ellie gets Julie's friendliest, most genuine grin. She's also used to kids that look like this, so she has nothing against letting her hang out like that.]

Hey! Yeah? We'll have to make it a mission to find a good one. C'mon in.

[Julie tilts her head toward the door, pulling it open and waiting for Ellie to step in before she follows.]

This place also has some pretty decent desserts. I don't want to say they're like anything back home, because they're not.

[Few and far between as things are back home. She had the chance to see the world Before, so she has some vague ideas.]

But they're still pretty awesome. My friend, Raleigh and I've been here a few times.

Some of the kedan can be dangerous. The gangs. They don't like Foreigners. I'm not even sure they like each other.

Can't lie. It was freaking amazing. Everything you'd think it was times ten million. If you ever get the chance, go for it.

Eating people? [Damn. He's done some pretty terrible shit in his life, and he wouldn't try to deny it, but cannibalism is definitely not on that list. What kind of world does this kid come from?]

[He grins brightly.]

Yes, but it is a good thing my job does not involve making puns.

[He's fully aware they're awful.]

As for books, I don't have any but the Emperor was considering opening her library to the public, I think. Until then, you would have to ask her permission at one of her audiences.

[Okay so Jim basically. Never uses the Network because he is way too busy out doing things!! captain things!! important stuff!! But here he is, slouching a little off to one side in his chair.

Things he has determined so far:

 this girl's got moxie
he's been hanging around with Bones too much because he just used the word 'moxie'.
 repeat points one through two.

He's grinning when he turns the feed on.]

Jokes, huh? Hit me. And maybe I'll give you a line on some books I've got lion around.

[Yeah he kind of punned there oops.]

[Those count. She should tell Ellie about the apple orchard she and her friends found. Those were some damn good Honeycrisp apples.

Julie looks up at the menu before nodding at Ellie.]

Seven for spicy. Four for mild. And if you want something sweet, I suggest the rainbow colored one. It's sort of like a stiff pudding. Pretty awesome.
washitaway: (i am super confused)

Well... [He can't disagree with that, even including all those scalps he took at Wounded Knee.] Well that ain't gonna happen here.

[Seriously, if someone tries to eat you, Ellie, just let him know.]

Cross my heart. I've got witnesses. Witnesses that are here. They'll back me up on this one.

I understand what you mean. It's like that here too, I'm afraid.

Books in English aren't that easy to find.

[That definitely gets a laugh, his expression bright.]

Cute. Name's Jim Kirk. Nice to-- you know. 'Meet' you. So what's this about books?

Define 'gone to shit'. Because every other Tuesday I'd say this place definitely qualifies.

[HE'S SEEN SOME SHIT, MAN.]

I've got some classics kicking around. What's your opinion on Dumas?

Yes, exactly. They're just as gentle as a horse, despite the horns.

I'm not sure, but she seems to be more patient if you are well-mannered. She might ask you for something in return, but I am not sure. I have not asked her for anything.

As I understand it, they are people who can manipulate elements: not the scientific sort of elements, but things like water, fire, earth, and air, by moving their arms and legs. I had a waterbender on my crew, before he vanished: he showed me, a few times.

[At the mention of the waterbender in question he droops a little--it has been a while since he has heard anything of Noatak. It is very annoying, how frequently his crew disappears these days.]
