[Booker's looking a little awkward today - probably because instead of questions or demands, he's just got...well, maybe an announcement to make? Either way, he's just more aware of the fact that this network thing is a pretty public platform and Booker DeWitt? Is no public speaker.

So he clears his throat.]

So, uh. Some of you've been saying you're in need of food? And we've got an abundance of it here. Elizabeth's doing her best to feed me up, I guess, and I can't eat all of it myself. I'm out and about making deliveries most every day as it is, I can always bring some leftovers around with me too.

[He scratches the back of his neck, then glances off to the side and holds up a bright red knitted scarf.]

We may have a number of these, soon, too. [His look is rather confused, like 'is this normal?' Or possibly, 'help me!' And then he turns the feed off.]

Who's Elizabeth and why do you think your heart's hard? Metaphorically, obviously. I really don't think you were talking literally.

[Boy you sure do ask some pointed questions, huh.] I'm not much more'n a thug. But maybe I should ask who's asking?

How old is she? Is she a friend like 'I like this girl and she's had a rough life so I'm worried about her' or like 'she's hot and I could totally see something happening if she was interested but I'm a good guy so I would never push it'?

Hayley Stark.. My heart's probably somewhere in the middle? I don't judge. [Yes, she does.]

[Why does everyone assume he has dishonorable intentions?

She's nineteen, and I'm just lookin' out for her. She didn't have anyone back where we came from, and people were hurting her.

How old are you?

[A beat, then Hayley appears vaguely apologetic.] Oh, sorry.. I should have asked what your name is? Sometimes I get too interested in people to stop and be polite, you know?

My name's Booker DeWitt. [He frowns at her over the console.] I'm 38, why?

[He's mostly suspicious out of a sense of needing to protect Elizabeth - not that he thinks a kid like Hayley would pose any real threat to her.]

Is Booker like, a family name?

[He pauses, because - what?]

DeWitt's my family name. Booker's my given name.

No, I know. But I mean, is that like, your dad's name, and his dad's before that, and whatever? Or were your parents seriously trying to make you a country music star? Or a dick.

..A detective, I mean. I could totally see you in black and white doing the whole noir thing.

My father's name was Zachary. I never thought to ask why they named me as they did.

[His face goes a little dark at the thought of his father. Maybe not a road she wants to go down.]

I can't say I know what the hell you're talking about, except I was a detective for a while, with the Pinkertons.

Pinkertons. Like the cowboy police.

[She considers that for a second.]

Can't say I've heard 'em called that. No cowboys in New York.

I didn't know they had Pinkertons in New York.

Are you from the city or upstate?

Pinkertons have branches all over the country.

Wait- What year are you from?

Nineteen-twelve. What year're you from?

[Actually he can't quite tell if he's talking to a boy or a girl, but he's too polite to ask.]

..That's a trip. [Because wow that's a lot of years in between there.]

Wait, you're before the war, right? Is that the Great Depression, or is that after the war? I probably should have paid more attention in history, but I never really thought it would be super relevant beyond the whole 'learn from your ancestors' mistakes' thing.

[What are you even talking about, kid.]

Gonna have to be more specific than that. I fought in the Indian Wars, if you can call it that. [It was more like wholesale slaughter, though.] The war between the states was before my time.

[..Wait, did she just spoil him to his future?]

Never mind the war. If you had to describe the U.S. right now, would you call it greatly depressed?

[To be fair, his future mostly consists of world-hopping and death, so it's kind of moot to spoil him for WWI.]

Guess that'd depend on who you're talkin' to. Ask a fella who lives on Park Avenue, or a fella who lives in Hell's Kitchen.

Is Hell's Kitchen an actual place? [Not just a show where some chef yells at people?]

I guess the country's always divided though, huh? The people that get away with everything and the people that suffer for it.

It's the way things are. Even if you don't have Hell's Kitchen anymore when you're from, you've probably got something like it. Irish, mostly, in my day. But it's always somebody, crowding in the tenements, doing the labor for the rich men.

Yeah, that hasn't really changed. [She sighs.]
