[ Stocking looks oddly contemplative today, dressed a little more conservatively in a black and grey Victorian-esque collared dress. Though she intentionally flicked on the video, she's barely paying attention to it, instead seemingly reading something just off screen. ]

Why do you suppose some leave when people of less use are stuck here? If someone's better at everything... wouldn't you keep him around?

[ It's an unintentional slip when she says "him" instead of "them" but she doesn't appear to notice. ]

Maybe this place just likes to fuck with us for fun.

I wouldn't doubt the 'fucking with us for fun' part for a second. But I guess there's no concrete answer as to why certain people go.

Nice to meet you Stocking. [Odd name, but eh he's heard odder.] Anyways, try not to worry too much. You never know - he might come back.

Do you think so? More people leave than arrive, it seems lately.

Maybe, but that doesn't mean it'll always be that way. [Not that he wants people to come here -- this isn't exactly a best situation in his opinion -- but just to lay out some optimism, since she seems pretty down.] Give it time and who knows, right?

[ She does manage to smile and sound a little less glum. ]

I don't think she's got that kind of control.

[There's no trace of bitterness in his tone, but his easy smile is nowhere near his eyes when he says it. Guess who's been here the lion's share of a year and still doesn't feel useful? This guy right here.]

[ Stocking doesn't care that it sounds petulant and makes no sense. But she does note the difference in Jim's smile, debates silently for a moment then asks. ]

[It's something he's done a lot of thinking of, and yeah, no. Not his bag. Being a captain? Life or death choices? That's fine. But every man and woman, human or otherwise, that serves with him? Chooses to serve. To put their lives in his hands. He can accept that. Be responsible for it. But these people, who haven't had that choice? No.]

If people want to stay, I'd rather they could. If they wanted to leave, I'd do everything in my power to get them home.

[He rubs a hand over his face, and then,]

[ The statement isn't bitter, only thoughtful. ]

He's carefully silent for a moment.]

[ She doesn't seem to notice the pause. ]

Mm, we met in Sinbrilee. He was interesting to talk to and he won one of those special fruit baskets everyone was competing for, for me. He said all he wanted in exchange was a civilized dinner and good conversation.

[ It was somewhat ironic, given that Jim had been the one to suggest the courtesan houses in the Fire Sector for some companionship that didn't necessarily involve sex at that very same Bacchanal. ]

[Well that's. Alarmingly non-genocidal. He snorts.]

[ Stocking raises an eyebrow at the sudden encryption. ]

[His tone is very flat.]

[ Stocking shrugs a little, her gaze finally flicking over to the screen directly from whatever she had in front of her that was off screen. ]

It never came up in conversation. That wasn't the kind of thing we talked about.

[ Now she frowns, not appreciating his prying. ]

[He sighs, eases his hands into the air in a gesture of surrender.]

I just want to make sure he wasn't setting you up for anything. It's how he operates.

I just don't trust him. Especially around people I like.

[ She shrugs, but there's an edge to it even if she knew it had been brought up with good intent. ]

My sister used to do that, you know. When we were little, she'd try and order people to be my friend. If they didn't agree, she'd get in a fight with them.

I'm not faulting you for it... I'm just saying, it's happened before. So why is it different if it was Khan?
