Hello..?

[Have yourself a twelve year old girl testing the water on the shiny new thing and mumbling to herself a little as she does.]

...I hope I'm doing this right.

[Oh right. The people can hear her. Sarah takes a deep breath and gets to talking.]

I uh, gotta say, this is some real crazy stuff going on. I don't even know where to start makin' sense of any of it. The Kedan people, the ones that work here? I think they work here. Live here? I dunno. They explained a lot of stuff but I'm still trying to wrap my head around even being here.

[Sarah pauses. When she speaks again it's with a little less certainty.]

Do they ever make mistakes with who they bring here? I'm not sure I'm the monster fighting type.

[Not real ones anyway.]

[Midii had to hand it to her; whoever this girl was, she seemed to be taking things a lot calmer than Midii herself had when she first woke up here.]

If they do, they haven't owned up to it yet.

[Holy crap it's a person. While she knows this was the likely outcome, Sarah's still a little surprised to see someone pop up.]

Oh. Well.

[Sarah's got so much on her mind, she's opted to just focus on the task at hand. She's worried, even if she is relatively calm.]

Have you been here long? [A beat.] Is it dangerous?

They say there's a war going on.

[Her phrasing is deliberate. It was what she had been told all along. At times, there were even evidence of such. The Fire Sector. Discussions of people being killed. The Emperor herself being slaughtered in her own palace. Yet, relatively speaking, these were all so minor compared to the type of battlefield she had grown up knowing.]

Nobody's ever tried to hurt me. Most of them even want to help. It's...nice.

And, yes, I've been here for a while. About half a year, I think.

Vale's Bones. I had doubted the claims that this place sometimes summons children. And yet? Here we are.

Hello, child. I have been told that summons such as yours are in error. Though that is just hearsay presently. I'm currently in the midst of trying to get to the bottom of this very matter.

A war? That's... that's bad.

[So there's trouble here too. Sarah can take some comfort in knowing it's not as bad as it is at home, at least not at the moment. Still, home is where her dad is and she'd really rather be with him.

It's a comfort though, to hear that in six months there's been no harm done to the girl she speaks to.]

The Kedan mentioned some things. I was kinda hoping it wasn't true.

[Sarah not so politely responds with a gasp and takes a step back from the screen. No offense, friend, but you really aren't what she expected to see.]

[This day can't get any weirder. She at least listens to what's being said, which is a start.]

Uh, sir? Um... I don't mean to be rude or nothin', but... what are you... exactly?

[Bad? Yes. But it could always be worse. At least here, there was food. Shelter. She could fall asleep at night without having to worry about an air raid.]

[His ears flatten back. God, he gets this a lot.]

[If only text was viable for someone with a crab-hand. He'd get around this particular faux pas with a lot more grace.]

[...Oops. Sarah cringes and shuffles back to the console. Her expression is apologetic.]

Sorry! I'm really, really sorry. I've just never met anyone like you before so...

[Yeah she'll just that sentence trail off.]

But um. What were you saying?

Not much, now that I think about it. We're hear to fight somethin' bad and we can't say it's name.

[Anything Sarah tried to ask beyond that was hushed and shut down.]

The Emperor, at least I think that's who it was, he didn't look real happy.

[He huffs and his ears remain laid back like some kind of one-horned irritated cat for a good while. It's only midway through his fresh explanation that they go back to normal. As he talks, he gestures with his good hand.]

You are forgiven. I am not used to being amongst so many Overlanders myself, though I usually let it go without comment these days. I'm the odd man out, it seems.

As I had been saying, I've been investigating the summoning spell that calls us to this realm. I have been told that children being conjured is in error, as there is little you can offer in terms of war efforts. I have not had any manner of official confirmation on that just yet; this is gathered information simply from speaking to other foreigners such as you and I. Ones that have been present on the turtle longer.

His predecessor was recently killed. If I were him, I wouldn't be very happy either.

[She had no idea how close the new Emperor was to the old one. But she could assume.]

The something bad...it's appeared over the Network before. I've seen it. We can't say its name because it will appear and start to cause more trouble.

How did they die? Was it the bad thing?

[One can hope it was accidental and not murder, right?]

Does it look... normal? I mean, could I tell if I saw it?

[Cause there's some non-humans running around and she'd really hate to trust the wrong one.]

[Determined to fix her error from before, Sarah holds to his each and every word. What she hears is a little worrying.]

So I'm a mistake then. Does that mean I'll be sent away?

It was bad. Murder. We don't know who did it yet, but people are investigating.

As for the creature...how good are you with technology?

[You sir, have a potty mouth. As she reads it's easy to tell by her expression that she's torn between concern and amusement.]

[Gotta get the important observations out of the way first.]

I dunno if I want to fight though.

[But he's got her thinking. If things really are bad, then even if she's not meant to be here, learning some kind of defense couldn't hurt.]

Do you really think I could do all that?

[Sarah nods, relieved to hear there's investigation going on.]

I'm pretty good. I mean I have my own computer back home. This one's a bit weird but the basis looks the same.

Perhaps? Though the people who are returned seem to follow no discernible rhyme or reason. I have only been here a short while, but I have seen beings capable of much sent back with little warning.

[His ears flatten back again, the mage now frowning in thought rather than annoyance.]

Have they issued you a caretaker of any kind? You appear...young.

[She'll adjust. If anything, she'll find it funny.]

[Sarah motions to herself, and what he can see by the video. Her words are light and she smiles faintly.]

How can you tell?

[It's a relief to talk to someone like this and to hear what he's got to say. Sarah's been feeling pretty hopeless until now. Even if this is a blanket statement that he gives to all, it's nice to hear something good.]

[Damn. It's one thing to bring in a kid like Ellie. But this? This kid doesn't seem like the type at all. Probably someone from a world that hasn't had to deal with a zombie apocalypse. Tess almost feels bad for her, in a weird way.]

It probably is a screw-up. I hear time stops where you come from, though, so I wouldn't worry too much. Your family won't have to call the cops or anything.

Nope. It's just me. Or I think it's just me. There's others in the area but I haven't met them yet.
