[ River's sitting in her suite in the Water, evidenced by the soft colours and natural materials in her background. She touches the screen carefully, teeth pinching her lower lip as though she doesn't know recording has started -- but then she starts speaking without changing anything, so maybe she does know. ]

High chance of improbability even in this 'Verse, can't go between-between-between. Even if you use orthogonal coordinates, meeting at right angles. [ She seems briefly frustrated, whether at the improbability of her situation or merely her own inability to verify what the kedan told her is unclear. She hadn't had the opportunity to think on it much with being drafted into the bottle, with all that had followed that and now that she did, she was still no better equipped to explain anything. Her fingers tangle in a dingy chain around her neck, tugging at a small ring and charm that seem very tarnished. ]

Wishing ring.

[The cheeky grin softens into something more sincere and soft, but still full of boyish delight.]

So you wanna fly? We can fly.

[ River nods, raises one hand to the console screen as though intending to feel the energy of the ring. ]

It's usually a lamp.

Hm?

[He tilts his head curiously.]

You mean a lantern?

[ River smiles and shakes her head. ]

Genies live in lamps.

[Kyle stares at her for a moment in complete surprise, and then starts laughing. He'd been thinking of the legends surrounding the origin of the Corps, where the name had come from the lamps that the first ones had carried through the swamps.]

Well an A.I. lives in mine. Anyway. Pick you up tomorrow?

[ For all the speech oddity, River doesn't have any trouble following the conversation. She also doesn't seem to think it's necessary to give Kyle her address or directions, so that's something. ]

[it's only after he disconnects that he realises he didn't ask her, but shrugs it off. The video feed could place a location, and so, flying low, he circles the area, looking around to see if he can spot her standing on the roof or on the street near the door of a building. There's little need to glow in broad daylight but he does it anyway for the effect, the green uniform shimmering.]

[ River is sitting on the stone half-wall that line the canals of the Water Section, her feet above the ground and kicking idly against the stone. The green catches her eye, watching him descend. ]

[Months ago he met Temeraire here, and unlike then he has a chance for flashiness. He foregoes it, hovers a foot above the ground before he lands, rolls his shoulders, and smiles at her.]

Ready, or you want to grab something to eat first?

[ She watches intently, scanning for a grav belt or any other type of mechanical outfitting that could explain how he was able to move like that. Seeing none, her interest only grew. ]

Shouldn't, before flying.

[ Especially considering it might make a reappearance, depending on what kind of flight and how smooth it was. ]

Yeah, most people prefer not to.

[Kyle ate little before flying, or flew in constructs and not very quickly. He stretches, and a staircase leading up appears, ending in mid-air.]

So. Ladies first?

Stairway to Heaven.

[ The phrase slips out before she gives it much consideration and she lifts her skirt to place one foot on the construct step, wonderingly when she discovered it was solid. ]

[And, just like that, Kyle starts humming it as she walks upwards, following her a few steps down. The staircase extends as she gets two-thirds of the way up, the section on the ground giving way to nothingness, moving with them as they walk upwards.]

What d'you think so far? Pretty cool, huh?

[ She pauses when she notices the stairway fading out of existence, cutting off a retreat. There's just such a whole inexplicability of it all that she's uneasy, despite the feeling warring with her childlike wonder of it. ]

But how do you do it?

[He leans forward, eyes twinkling. He's thinking of the ring, and stars, and soaring, green constructs all around him, glowing in the nights sky.]

Gonna believe me if I say it's my little secret?

[ immediately: ] I can keep a secret. I've kept lots of them.

[It's a bit alarming, but he's not surprised there's more to her than meets the eye. He already got that impression the first time around.]

It's the ring. It does what I want it to.

[He rings up a bouquet of roses, bright green, and presents it to her.]

See?

[ River stares at the roses before holding out her hands to accept the bouquet, running her fingers up the stems and leaning forward to see if they'll actually smell like flowers too. ]

I see but I don't, you're explaining but you're not saying anything real.

[He tilts his head, studying her, rocking on his heels.]

I'm not sure how else to put it.

[ She accepts that explanation because it's one that she's had to use, whether in so many words or not, many times in the past for herself. ]

You're different now, than you were getting the water. Why?

[Keeping up with her, he frowns, bemusedly, racking his brains for that specific memory.]

I don't think I'm very different. What makes you say that?

[ River's hands move across her stomach a little, not quite the same fluttery motion as she'd done in the Palace's antechamber but similar. It's her gesture of trying to pry loose her thoughts into something coherent to others. ]

Like a balloon, taken all the air out. Smaller... I think.
