Coal is a mineral originally from organic matter, and charcoal is burnt wood that goes through a process to remove its oxygen from it and then compress so it burns.

People have made their own charcoal for a really long time, long before they started digging up fossil fuels. People used to make their own charcoal so they didn't need to buy it.
