Is she conscious?

[Valdis opens her eyes and looks at her radio as Jackie's staticky and panicked voice comes over it, announcing that Milyn has been stabbed. She takes a deep breath, knowing that this had been a possibility didn't make the fact any easier. But she doesn't respond, doesn't even move, simply closes her eyes again and falls back into meditation.]

What?

[Guys come on it's been like a DAY. He's helpless on this one, he can't heal anyone, but that doesn't mean he won't worry. Boy, will he worry.]

How- Who would do that to her? Is she gonna-

[What? Make it? Be even remotely okay? Obviously not, she's been freaking stabbed. ]

[ That couldn't be. He had been talking to her just hours ago! He should have seen this coming. ]

H-how bad is the wound?!

What the hell?! Who did it?!

[Yuri's not a healer so there's nothing he can do. But he could maybe do something about whoever was responsible.]

[She wanted to be that surprised. Truly. And while her concern for Milyn was still great--she was pissed, but it wasn't like she'd wished the woman dead--she also couldn't help thinking that this kind of reaction was...a little too possible. Four years, and several cast changes later, and yet there were some things about Keelai that remained the same. Namely, that there was always that one idiot.]

I can be there in a few minutes.

Try to keep pressure on the wound.

If you're in the clinic, there are medical supplies. Try to stanch the bleeding until someone can get there.

I or someone else will be there soon.

[Panic is locked down very tightly, to be let out later.]

[She also cites the street she's taking. She's distinctive even in most crowds, and the less time wasted, the better.]

[With that handled, Raine sets out at a run.]

[It barely takes Tony a minute to get there, flying at top speed. He brakes hard with his repulsors and slams into the ground in front of Raine, and holds out his arms.] Don't know how bad it is, so we'd better get there fast. Hope you don't get airsick. [This trip is not going to be optimized for passenger comfort.]

I don't.

[She's brusque, for perhaps obvious reasons. Raine barely breaks stride, having been forewarned that Tony was coming to get her, and while she does not quite throw herself into his arms, the motion is rapid and efficient and she trusts him to catch hold of her and keep it.]

Go.

[Raine holds on tight.]

[Once he's got Raine secured, Tony takes off again. Over the rushing wind, he asks,] Your healing spells. What's their limit? Fatal injury? Can they revive someone after cardiac arrest?

[In humans, the window between clinical death and irreversible brain damage, under normal conditions, is about three minutes. (That's a fun fact he knows for predictably sad personal reasons.) Stabbings aren't usually immediately fatal, but since this was probably a hit and not a random violent crime, it's a safe bet that whoever it was knew what they were doing. Unless another healer can get there before them and stabilize Milyn, they'll be cutting it close.]

[Raine is actually almost used to trying to make herself understood in flight. She lifts her voice a bit against the wind.]

It depends. If she's still alive, I should be able to heal her. If her heart has stopped, it will depend on whether her mana is still present or has dissipated.

You might say it would rely on her will to live.

Good. I think. ["Mana" is obviously not a concept Tony is an expert on, especially not in a medical context. But that at least sounds promising. Milyn has lived through a lot of upheaval and disaster on the turtle - surely her will is strong.

But even if he feels better about Milyn's chances, Tony's still furious.]

This never should have happened. If Valdis hadn't made that stupid network announcement—!

[He agrees that Milyn needs to be held accountable for what she did - but this isn't what he had in mind. ]

It's still less certain than I'd like, but my skills have improved while I've been here.

[She is a far cry, some days, from the woman who couldn't save Dorr, could barely do more than stabilize Altessa.]

Tony, think. I don't entirely agree with how she went about things, but she meant to tell only we Foreigners. Either someone else found out another way, or one of us did something exceptionally rash.

[All the same: Raine can't find herself too surprised, as the shock settles into time to act.]

Or the radios aren't secure. Which we knew.

[Even through the armor's speakers and over the wind, there's clear frustration in Tony's voice. He does his best to keep the radio encryptions updated, but there's only so much he can do with the tools he has. They've had intrusions on the radio network before - Valdis should have known better.]

They're better than the consoles right now. I can understand her reasoning in that much, at least.

...in any case, this isn't the time for that. Blame won't help anyone right now.

[All the same, Raine still looks troubled.]

Yeah. You're right. [He sighs.] I wish I knew what was going on.

[Had Valdis had some kind of plan? Had it gone awry? Who was Milyn's attacker? Was their motive simple revenge, or were there deeper political machinations involved? Revenge seems like the simplest explanation, but he never trusts things to be simple where the Snakes are involved. Or Valdis, for that matter. She always seems to be dabbling in a bunch of different pies, or however that saying goes.

Anyway, they're nearing the clinic now, so the bigger picture will have to wait. Hopefully they'll still have a Cherrywood Healer to question when all is said and done.]

So do I. Someone there will explain, I'm sure.

[Read: they had better. Raine can identify the landmarks, though, knows they're close, and she shifts her grip on Tony, so she's prepared to be on her feet again at a moment's notice.]

[If anyone is still alive, she is going to save them.]

I'd like to hear the explanation from Milyn, [Tony says as they land.] Good luck.

[Is "good luck" an appropriate thing to say in this sort of situation? Is there a medical equivalent of "break a leg"?]

[Raine can't help but agree. She nods sharply, but doesn't bother with words; as soon as Tony's on the ground, she practically leaps from his arms and heads inside the clinic at a run.]

[There really is no medical equivalent. She'll take the luck.]
