Well.

[ Here's someone not seen for a while. She looks a little disheveled, but otherwise, whole and hearty. ]

I think I disappeared from here? The date seems to be quite different from what I remember. I've already stopped by and seen that the shelter is still running.

[ The paperwork is a mess, but she'll straighten that out soon enough. ]

On to more important business. I need help at the shelter. Several people would be ideal, but what I need is a head honcho. [ Yes, she just said that. ] There's relatively little money in it, but doing good works is its own reward?

[ To Jackie: ]

Are you still here, Jackie? I'm sorry I disappeared, I just went to sleep and when I woke up an entire month had passed. It's a bit disconcerting, really.

If it's enough for room and board, and maybe a few books here and there, that would be enough.

I need someone to help me go through the books, before I say how much the work is worth.

[ Sonja arrives promptly, and stays outside for a few moments just to admire the place.

She knocks on the door politely. ]

[ One of the Kedan shows her to the office, where Brigid is bent over a book, with a small calculator, going over the books.

She looks up at the tap on the door. ]

Oh! Come in. Come in.

[ Brigid's hair is up in a messy bun, and she's got ink stains on her fingers. ]

Please have a seat. I'm going over the books right now. Was there any questions you had?

[ Sonja walks in. Her pose is a bizarre mix of regality, discipline and nervous slacker.

She takes the seat indicated, taking the time to look around and also study Brigid herself. She rather liked the messy bookworm aesthetic. ]

So this is a shelter for whom, exactly? What's the capacity, turnover. What is the primary goal of the establishment?

[ Brigid collapses in her seat. She tucks a stray piece of hair behind her ear. ]

Originally, it was planned for Foreigner and Native alike. It seems to be used more by the natives than the Foreigners. Capacity is about one-fifty but the primary goal is to provide a safe place for those that society casts out.

[ Brigid looks up as one of the Kedan comes in and announces that there's another fight. She sighs and pushes herself up. ]

Excuse me a moment.

[ Brigid walks out and quickly breaks up the fight between two Kedanese and basically sends them to their respective corners. She comes back relatively quickly. ]

Sorry, where was I?

Not too many foreigners use the shelter, you were saying.

Are fights common? I didn't even know Keeliai had a significant homeless population.

Fights get to be common until they realize this is neutral ground. I won't tolerate territorial fights in the shelter. This is Switzerland as far as I'm concerned.

[ Brigid huffs out a sigh. ]

The homeless are always invisible.

[ She'll pretend like 'Switzerland' has any kind of meaning to her. ]

Is that a rhetorical comment, or like do you literally mean the Kedan just like camouflage into the streets so you can't see them?

It's not rhetorical. It's more...

[ She fumbles for the word. ]

It's not literal either. But people don't pay attention to the homeless unless they are one of them, or they've had their eyes open.

I think you're going for 'figurative.' A metaphor. Which is a rhetorical device.

[ Maybe she'd see them now if she looked, who knows. ]

So how is it funded?

I'm well aware. I just fumble with words now and again.

[ Brigid huffs and tucks hair behind her ear. ]

We're funded on donations, completely. I barely take a salary, so that we can make ends meet. I'm still straightening out the books from the month I was gone.

Oh? Where did you go?

Can I take a look at the books?

I don't know where I went. I went to sleep, woke up and a month had passed. It's very frustrating.

And of course. They're just rather scattered right now.

[ Brigid waves to a pile on the edge of her desk. ]

[ Sonja pokes at one thing, but she really can't get her head on this until she's got these all organized, so she sets herself towards that task. ]
