[Enjolras is shown on the screen examining the device for some time before he satisfies both his curiosity and his understanding that he is indeed on the network. Finally, he lifts his head and speaks. His voice is troubled in tone, but clear.]
My friends. Greetings. It’s been explained to me that we will are confined in this place, brought here with no consideration of our will and left here without the ability to leave. I do not choose to accept this, and I trust others feel the same. If you do, contact me and join me. We will gather as much additional information as we can, and see if we can’t take this upon ourselves to gain our freedom. Who is with me?
[He’s fierce as he speaks. His eyes and set of his jaw show his determination. He shuts off the device, again taking his time with it, and waits for a reply.]

Hey, everybody. I'm turning... twenty one? Twenty two? Have we decided how we're counting that year in the Dreaming yet?

Anyway, I'm having a party at my place. Everybody's welcome. Even if you don't like me, I do have a lot of ice cream. Just putting that out there.

[Attached is his address in the Sky Sector, and the date and time.

Some Foreigners – specifically, Aya, Raine, Jackie, Bucky, Valdis, Danny, Sonja and Miles – will also receive individual texts, consisting of an ASCII art birthday cake, a smiley face, and a link to this video message. Cute.]

[Valdis appears more relaxed and content than usual, her hair is braided and pulled over one shoulder.]

Though it was some time ago, I appreciated your defense of me against the unfounded charges anonymously posted to the network and am pleased to say that I have spoken with Arbitrator Eliyen and have been reinstated as the KPD's Chief of Police.

The past few months have not been ideal, but I would like to thank Pepper, Gene and Kaliel for handling the KPD in my absence. It isn't an easy job and it was made even more difficult due to the atrocities committed by the Cultists. The KPD has several of these cultists in custody, but they are nothing more than pawns in a greater plan. I promise that we will find the masterminds and they will pay for their crimes.

[Now for the new things]

To better serve Keeliai, I will be doubling the number of officers in the coming months. In addition, we acquired four Kirin a few months ago for a mounted force, but need a single person to devote some time to their care. If anyone is interested in that position, please let me know.

That is all.

Okay okay - question to all the Foreigners!

What are your favourite foods? And how are they made?

I swear this is important.

Also if somebody were, you know, writing a kind of story, which may or may not involve Foreigners, what's the rule of thumb for your biology?

...Asking for a friend.

[Fai is once again in the kitchen of the Midnight Hotel, this time wearing a plain old white apron instead of his frilly pink one (and of course, the ever-present eyepatch over his left eye). He's got his handset propped up on the counter and he's sitting with his elbows on the counter and his chin in his hands, and there's a book of some sort laying open between him and the screen.]

Hello again, everyone! I was wondering: how many of you out there like to cook? Or even if you don't really like it, how many of you have recipes you might be willing to share? [One hand drops down to pat the book in front of him] I'm trying to collect some new ideas for things to make.

Even if you can't really remember the exact recipe, if you know the basic ingredients I might be able to work off of that! And I'd be willing to share the results, of course~

And do us both a favor, don't waste my time with anything boring.

If you have to think about it-it's boring.

And John? We're out of tea. Kindly make yourself useful and get some more.

One year has passed since I have arrived on these shores.

For one year, I have known the joy freedom, to wander paths that always have been closed. And while there is much I have learned, there is still so much yet to discover.

I hope these days can continue forever. But even if they cannot, I am happy to have lived them - to have known all of you. I am grateful.

If it is something I am allowed to choose, I would like to consider this date my birthday.

[ It's the second time a message from Kylo Ren shows up in as many months, a new record! What joy!

But this misfired text message going public by morning isn't one he would have wanted to share. ]

[From the moment the camera turned on, Midii looked...almost as if she were regretting the decision. Public speaking was never her strong suit, which was why she so rarely made videos like these. But there was something on her mind. For once...something personal. And after a few seconds of hesitation, her resolve won out.]

It's...strange to think about.

[Maybe it would have been better if she'd gathered more of her thoughts before doing this, but she hadn't wanted to give herself a chance to back out.]

I cam here when I was eleven. Today, I'm sixteen. [Ah, there was one point of motivation; she'd never publicly announced her birthday before. There truly was a first time for everything.] And I've had so much time to think about what that means. That I've lived here for so long that I...I almost forgot what it was like to live in the world I grew up in. That...that's a good thing. Because when I came here, I didn't trust anybody. I couldn't. I was scared and small and...didn't think I deserved the kindness that people were suddenly showing me. I tried turning them away. I figured that they'd get over it and move on sooner or later and leave me alone.

But...they didn't. Leave me alone, that is. Five years later, and people still won't leave me alone. [Despite her words, she spoke them with hints of a smile. Humor. Her attempt at a joke.] I've never been more grateful for those people as I am today. And I wish...that I could tell the ones who are gone that. I wish they could know how much they meant to me. More than even I knew then.

[A pause. She took a deep breath and stared into the camera greatly. Then let out a sheepish smile.]

I'm...not even sure what I was trying to say anymore. I guess...for those of you who are still finding it hard to deal with having been brought here...I just wanted you to know that there are good things that have come out of it. I'm living proof of that.

[Because she was still alive.]

[Although, just when it looked like Midii was about to (awkwardly) sign off...one last thought came to her. And in a rare show of her age, her nose wrinkled slightly in distaste.]

I still don't think I'll ever get used to the magic here, though. It's too....unpredictable.

I've been thinking and writing some things down, and something I've wanted to ask...

What would you consider very... mm, 'defining' I suppose is the word I'm looking for? Something that you feel your reality wouldn't be the same without. Don't worry, I'll go first.

[ She flashes a knowing smile at that. ]

Certainly, there are certainly many historical events that shaped the world, but if I had to pick one that's affective to Columbia in my era would be the discovery a few decades ago of the Lutece Particle, which in turn is used to make a Lutuce Field. Another term for it is called 'quantum levitation', and it suspends atoms in mid-air by a controllable field, allowing things to be manipulated within the sphere of gravity, and to impart those effects onto other objects.

[ Someone's read The Principles of Quantum Mechanics a few too many times... ]

And that's how Columbia is an airborne city. So, I think things in my reality would be very different if that hadn't been discovered!

<<Ugh...did anyone get the number of the goddamn train that hit me? It'll be another month before I'll shake this nightmare.>>

Well.

[ Here's someone not seen for a while. She looks a little disheveled, but otherwise, whole and hearty. ]

I think I disappeared from here? The date seems to be quite different from what I remember. I've already stopped by and seen that the shelter is still running.

[ The paperwork is a mess, but she'll straighten that out soon enough. ]

On to more important business. I need help at the shelter. Several people would be ideal, but what I need is a head honcho. [ Yes, she just said that. ] There's relatively little money in it, but doing good works is its own reward?

[ To Jackie: ]

Are you still here, Jackie? I'm sorry I disappeared, I just went to sleep and when I woke up an entire month had passed. It's a bit disconcerting, really.

Seems like there's been a lot going on during the couple of months since I got here - good things. New ideas, beginnings. I've also had the pleasure of talking to several of you who've been here for awhile yourselves. Most have talked about Keeliai like it's home now.

[Steve smiles at that word, but there's something almost sad about it. 'Home' will always be a complicated subject for him.]

I just celebrated my first birthday here, but I think it might take a bit longer to feel that way to me. I do have an idea that I think might help. I wanted to talk to those of you who've opened businesses here, get some advice. I have an idea for something, and a heck of a partner, but I haven't exactly amassed a fortune. [Where's a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist when you need one. He sighs, but when the little bird nearby starts to sing, his spirits are lifted again.] As much as going in debt goes against my better judgment, it's an option I'm willing to consider to get the ball rolling. The question is, is there any place that even gives loans to Foreigners?

Until then, if anyone needs some one-on-one training, I've got the time for it. Unless you'd rather be trained by the three-time YMCA welterweight boxing champ.

[He knows you used to pull your punches, Barnes. Steve doubts that he will the next time. His smile turns a little bit sly before he ends the feed.]

Sooooo...

[Fletch is using a console at the Healer's Guild, reclined back in his chair, looking generally thoughtful.]

I've heard from people that there used to be some sort of social gathering with all the Foreigners before the Malicant thing spread and... well, kinda destroyed most of everything. Well...

...Would anyone be interested in helping start that up again? Like, every two weeks have a sort of social night, get local businesses in who are looking to hire, invite the kedan, get everyone sort of mingling... Who knows? It might help. And god knows we all need to socialise a bit more.

[He shifts a bit.]

Now, I don't have much time to organise all this by myself, so I'd like to float the idea to other people, see if I can get some help. Kedan and Foreigner, both would be great, honestly, because then we can arrange stuff for both sides, and, to be honest, if I was just organising it, it would just be pub quizzes.

Oh, we'll also need a place to hold it, so if anyone's got a spare large conference room knocking around, that'd be great.

[He grins.]

So, come on, people. Stop being boring. Let's get out and socialise, eh? What's the harm?

While I appreciate the welcome, and the information, I have to say that I am unimpressed with the method by which I was brought.

[ Meaning, she’s a little salty right now. ]

I don’t suppose there is a school I could teach at is there? I can translate four languages, speak two, and have a doctorate in Irish history.

[ She’s hoping there’s some call for her skills somewhere in this place. ]

If not, I also have some skill with Krav Maga and could, potentially, teach that, if there’s some call for it. Basically, I wish to teach. If someone could direct me to a few opportunities, I’d be grateful.

I have something to tell you all, and some of you might not believe me.

[Valdis' voice is hesitant, halting and uncertain]

There are very few of us left, it seems, who remember Malicant's reign or the atrocities committed by his followers. The death, the taint, the drugs and the suffering inflicted upon foreigner and Kedan alike is unknown to all of our newcomers. But this isn't just about that.

[A long pause, followed by an audible breath]

I have recently discovered that Milyn, the Cherrywood Healer, was involved with the Cultists. She reported directly to Daseng and created the drug known as Dust, as well as the base for Lucid.

[Another pause and then a low growl.]

She was our only ally among the Kedan when we first returned from the Dreaming, she aided us in defeating Malicant...but she also helped him wreak his havoc in the first place.

[Another growl]

I don't know about all of you, but I can't trust her anymore.

Ssssoooo...

[Cue one Nurse Fletcher, sprawled out in a chair in one of the cafés, a cup of tea sat before him that he's idly stirring. It's his lunch break, he's allowed this.]

I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be much of a nightlife around here. Or, at least, one that people don't use like they should. I am, of course, talking about most of the Foreigners around here. Seriously, guys, you gotta blow off some steam at some point.

[A pause.]

And I ain't talking about bashing one another to bits in that arena on Tavimbi. I'm talking about going for a pint after work, or going on an all-night bender, getting mortal and waking up regretting stuff.

[Another pause.]

Not that I'd recommend stuff like that on a regular basis, but, hey. It works. Besides, a bit of social lubrication can help get people to know each other better.

[He then stops, scratches his cheek, raising the cup.] Of course, I might be completely wrong about everyone being boring and not spending time with each other. [Slurp of tea.] So, if I am, you'll have to come and prove me wrong.

When she realizes she's not centered on camera, she scoots over a bit, double-checks, and then off she goes.]

Can't say I'm tickled pink with the theme of this particular party, but what choice've I got? I'm here, right?

[Her hands go up in a mocking 'you caught me' gesture.

Hah. Yeah, right. No one's getting off that easy. This isn't exactly what Nymphadora Tonks was planning to do with her day. Maybe if she'd had a little forewarning about being technically abducted, sure, she could have planned out using weird tech and having her soul stuck in a little dark purple stone on a ring.

She didn't get that luxury, though, so no one here gets the luxury of avoiding her questionable (and oddly mirthful) wrath.]

You see, the thing here is - I mean, the reason I've got my knickers twisted - is I was minding my own business when I got snatched up. If I hadn't been minding my own business, it'd be a different story. If I'd been hexing your turtle from a broomstick thirty feet up, sure, I could completely understand you lot being a bit miffed. Hexing a turtle's not on.

But me, I was just going through my daily rota as one does, completely innocent and not at all aware of cities on the backs of turtles.

Nevermind I was about to tuck in to my supper. That's just rude.

[With a dramatic sigh, she continues sympathetically:]

Oh, but I suppose you all couldn't help yourselves. It's the hair, isn't it? People just love the hair.

[All right; she's not that upset. Yet. She loves a good adventure, and either the reality of her predicament hasn't quite hit home - or she's going to save her fretting for a more private moment.]
