[Console; Video] Fresh Meat

[The video opens on a somewhat charming smile. The man in it seems very sure of himself, and utterly unrattled by his new situation.]

Hey. Captain Jack Harkness here, and I've got to say it's a pretty nice turtle you've got. She's not exactly where I was trying to get, but seeing as this place seems short on the killer reality tv shows...pretty minor quibble.

I've already met a few of the locals - thanks again guys, and sorry about those vegetables - but I'm always open to meet more people. Local, not-so-local, I don't really mind either way since it looks like I'll have some free time.

Other than company, all I'm in the market for right now's a job and maybe some tools, if someone's willing to lend them - I have a piece of tech that got broken in transit somehow, and I'd really rather get it back in one piece.

[He raises his left arm to show off a leather cuff with what appears to be a communicator inside. It's been fried.]

I'm sure we can work something out in exchange, I've been told I'm pretty good with my hands.

[He laughs a little, at his joke, and there's a moment of dead air after it. Just when the pause starts to get uncomfortably long he makes a show of clearing his throat.]

And oh, Doctor, Rose? [His smile tightens, just barely. Appears just a bit forced.] If you're out there, looks like I'm alive after all. Which I'm kind of hoping you two didn't know, because seriously? There are much nicer ways to let a guy down.

Hello there, Captain. Unfortunately I don't think..we have any tools- [ that is her and her ..uh.. it's complicated-roommate ]

But I was going to head out to get some supplies, so I could offer to pick up something for you. What do you need? [ A hammer, or a screwdriver or something, right? ]

[Jack's smile brightens back up some at his first response.]

Hey. I appreciate it, but I don't want to put you out of your way. Anyway, this baby needs some pretty specialized stuff. She wasn't made to be that easily cracked open.

[He looks down like he's trying to formulate a shopping list in his head.]

We're talking a set of precision screwdrivers, side cutters, half dozen different types of pliers, some tweezers, a de-soldering tool, files, pick-up tool hex wrench...utility knife, some strippers... that's pretty much just for getting in. You need a voltage detector, and a bunch of other stuff once you get to figuring out what's wrong. Let alone fixing it and putting it back together. But it's mostly stuff anyone who works on electronics'll already have, and anything they don't I can probably swing something.

[His shrug is just about visible on camera, and he looks maybe a hint guilty at all the over-share before something occurs to him.]

But like I said - I appreciate it, and I just realized I didn't even ask for your name.

[ Y.. yeah all of that? WAY over her head. ]

Um...

[ Still she would have still offered - heck, she could ask shopkeeper what all that stuff was right? ]

Are you sure? .... what are you trying to fix, anyway?

OH! I'm sorry, that's right. My name is Marinette, it's nice to meet you!

[Jack laughs a little - he was kind of expecting that.]

Well, Marinette, like I said - this. [He holds up his wrist again, showing the strap and holding back the flap that holds the display.]

It's a communicator of sorts. I know it probably won't work here, but it's kind of nostalgic. [It was only a lie by omission, and his time with the Agency, let alone as a con-man meant he didn't even blink as he gave it.]

The actual list would be a lot more specific - if you want to give me some directions, I can check the place out myself.

[ That looked different from what they were given to communicate on the communicator - and he clarifies it definitely wasn't from here. ]

Ah, now that I can do! [ She's pleased too, being able to help someone - there's a slight pause before she sends over directions via text. Scouting around earlier really helped her out - it was pretty easy to get lost in a city this big. ]

Appreciate that - always good to get an idea of the direction to head in.

[And would you look at that the directions were easy enough to follow.]

Got any tips for me before I go? Recommendations when it comes to the local food?

[Never hurt to ask. Anyway, occupied right now was only a good thing.]

[ She tried to make it as easy as she could! ]

Well.. I'm actually new here too. Though... apparently I was here before. A couple of times. I don't remember any of the times I was here though... Ah, but I don't know if that's the same case for you! It may have been a special case in my circumstance.

I'd recommend the Hotel, if you're looking for food or somewhere to stay. [ And not just because her ...um. Friend. works there. ]

The food here can be a little ....strange otherwise, but you'll probably see something at least a little familiar at the Hotel.

[The idea doesn't seem to bother him too much, and he looks more thoughtful than anything.]

I'll have to keep my eye out for anyone who recognizes me. If I have been here, that might answer a question I've had for a while now.

[There's a laugh there, friendly.]

The hotel - Midnight Hotel you mean? Think I've gotten a few other recommendations so I'll end up over that way. I've had a pretty big variety of strange foods before, myself, so I'm sure I'll be fine either way.

[ It weirded her out a little bit, but she adjusted pretty darn quickly, overall. ]

Hehee, yep, that's the one! [ She pauses, about to mention the cultists and all that fuss, but it occurs to her they probably told him about all that, since she got the same information. ]

Strange foods..? Yeah but have you ever had anything that was actually still alive and jumped off your plate for freedom?

More than once, actually. It's not the worst of what I've eaten, either.

I mean, I'd prefer my food dead, all things told but by there's nothing wrong with experimenting a little.

What? [ Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwww. ]

I mean... really? But I thought sailors at least cook the fish they catch. I mean, I know that some people eat sushi but even that isn't alive. [ Just. Raw. Also yeah, she totally thinks he means water-ship Captain. ]

Really.

[He bites back a comment, behaves, but smiles.]

Never heard of sailors who ate a lot of sushi, but then I've never gotten to spend as much time around sailors as I'd like.

Well... they do eat fish. I assume. Ah, I'm sorry I guess that's a bad stereotype there. Still - [ She stops short as something occurs to her. ]

Wait, you don't? [ The bafflement has ramped her voice up to 30. ]

[Jack's wincing - just a little. He was not expecting that.]

No? Why do you think I do?

[It dawns on him almost as soon as he asks.]

Oh, oh, no, I'm not that kind of Captain. It's jut a rank.

[As a matter of fact, it wasn't even his.]

Oh! Oh gosh, I'm sorry! I, wow, way to go Marinette, I'm batting 0 for 0 here, aren't I?

At-ease.

[He jokes with a laugh, waving a hand dismissively at the screen.]

You're fine - don't worry about it. Guess I wasn't really specific. Thank you anyway. For the help.

[ She starts a little, and gives a laugh, rubbing behind her head, slightly embarrassed. ]

Ahaha -- sorry -- I mean, ... well even so I shouldn't have immediately assumed you were a sailor. But really, no thanks are necessary! It's the least I could do. I'm just sorry I can't help with your communicator there. If it was clothing you needed repaired on the other hand, that'd be different! [ That she COULD help with. ]

Come to think of it, you mentioned friends of yours too, didn't you? I haven't met them either, but it sounds like you didn't part on the best terms? [ If they accidentally left him for dead? What was THAT all about. ]

Well, I'm pretty sure my clothes are in one piece, but I'll need some more eventually. Once I've got a job, figured out what I'll need to be dressing for I can look you up. How's that?

[His smile thins a little at the mention of his friends. He was trying really hard not to feel betrayed by the whole thing, not without the whole story.]

We were on great terms, actually. Things were getting pretty dangerous, I went to buy the two of them some time. Got hit pretty hard. By the time I was back on my feet... [He shrugs, but it's clear he's upset.] Everyone else was down or gone, and I went to where they should've been just in time to see them leave.

That sounds just fine to me, Captain. [ Oops, she didn't mean to put a damper on his good mood. ]

But... well you were saying that you're 'alive after all' so ... they must have thought you were ...dead? And he is a --- wait, is your friend a doctor at all, or is that a title too?

Well, I definitely thought I was a goner. Either they thought I was too or... I don't know. Maybe they were in a hurry. [It's meant to come out as a joke, but the joke is a little bitter. He doesn't quite believe that right now. Anyway. It's not the first time he's been ditched. He sighs, but makes pointed eye contact.]

[A little laugh.]

Yeah. I know.

Well.. they're you're friends. They wouldn't have just... left you behind if they knew you were alive. [ She hopes they weren't those kinds of friends. ]

Do you and the Doctor get that a lot?

You're probably right. [They'd been, by then, the last people he thought would. Even if he never saw them again though, he guessed it was at least something that he'd gotten to kiss them goodbye. He loses his grip on his expression for a moment again, his gaze turning wistful.

He shakes his head, a hand coming up to run through his hair. Knock it off, Jack.]

Mostly him. Doctor what? Doctor who? It's like a broken record. Not a doctor, the Doctor.

Ahaha, that.. probably gets really annoying after a while. Well I can definitely keep an eye out for them, but what do they look like? [ She supposes if someone introduced himself as 'the doctor' that was obvious enough, but Rose could be a common name! ]

Well. She's blonde, gorgeous, a Londoner and... [Jack gives a very quiet laugh.] Probably she'll be walking around asking if anyone's seen the Doctor.

[ She mentally chuckles at the description, taking note. He must like her if he described her that way. But then they were friends, so that was a given. ]

Okay, got it. And the Doctor?
