Something was brought to my attention recently. I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner, but it could be really important.

Allergies.

Is there anyone here who has them? Of things from home, or maybe of something you've realized you're allergic to here. Plants...food...metals...I'm curious to know.

I agree. I mean...I don't really know enough about magic to speak about it on this level, but I'm sure there are things even magic can't always heal. And besides that, I still remember when everybody around here lost their powers.

...poppy was used to treat pain? [The look of surprise on her face indicated that she hadn't reached that part of her studies yet.] I didn't know that. I only ever knew it as a seasoning for food. Breads, mostly.

I recall. It bothered some more than others.

Poppy was one of the only things used to treat pain back then, before people began refining it into other things. Opium comes from poppy, and I understand that's been the basis for most every painkiller since.

[She nodded absently at his explanation, even jotting some of it down.]

When you say the 'basis' for...does that mean you ended up being allergic to other painkillers too? Or do you mean the idea of making painkillers from something like poppy, but not the same?

Basis in that they've since synthesized whatever compounds make poppy potent, and make it artificially now. Morphine, codeine, heroin... those kind of drugs.

I haven't had any reaction to other types of painkillers, no. None that I've found, at least.

[ Which, given his general lifestyle, is probably fortunate. ]

Unfortunately, I'm far from learning how to synthesize anything just yet. The few medicines I can make right now are all completely natural, from the plants I've found and a few others I'm starting to grow.

...but I will make a note to keep synthesized painkillers on hand too, just in case.

Nothing wrong with natural, hemuiket. It's a good thing that you're getting into, and one that would be stupid to rush.

I'm...I've never been much of a fan of people calling me things besides my name.

[There were some exceptions, most of whom were no longer in Keelai. Bakura was definitely not one of them.]

A hemuiket is a tall stalk of wheat, because of your light hair and how small you were when you got here.

[ It's not phrased as an insult; Bakura often 'names' people for his first impression of them, and that was what he got from Midii. ]

[That wasn't...so bad, really. With context, it seemed a pretty literal description of her physical appearance. Give or take the 'tall' part, but height had never been a sore spot with her. As such, though she still preferred her first name when addressed...in the interest of continuing to play nice:]

Is that not something you've ever done, called someone by something other than their name? Most people here I've found... use them too freely. But then not many people believe that names hold power any more.

[She was having the most unexpected flashback at this conversation. To one that had taken place years ago...nearly five, by her count. Although the context was different, she figured an explanation would work as well now as it had then.]

I think it depends on the world you come from.

In mine...names were important. Enough that if you came across a child with no family or past, then you didn't even bother giving them a name. You would call them "no name", as a reminder of how worthless they were considered. Even if they were strong or smart or could do things adults couldn't.

I used to hate my name when I was younger for that reason. I had a lot of responsibilities and a lot of sadness in my life. Those are things I'll never forget, of course, but now, I'm proud to be who I am, even if I'm not proud of everything I've done. I'm Midii. And...like I said...you can call me whatever you want, but that's the only name I'll ever have.

You could have just said that the first time you asked.

[It wasn't something she shared very often. She...didn't like talking about her past. She wouldn't shy away if opportunity presented itself for discussion, but she also knew there were things involved that hardly made for a pleasant topic. She brought it up now because...well...it was relevant. And, in some ways, she had a feeling it was important for him to know now. It wasn't an excuse, but it was an explanation.]

I'd like to think that just asking would be enough for people.
