Enjolras Arrives

[Enjolras is shown on the screen examining the device for some time before he satisfies both his curiosity and his understanding that he is indeed on the network. Finally, he lifts his head and speaks. His voice is troubled in tone, but clear.]
My friends. Greetings. It’s been explained to me that we will are confined in this place, brought here with no consideration of our will and left here without the ability to leave. I do not choose to accept this, and I trust others feel the same. If you do, contact me and join me. We will gather as much additional information as we can, and see if we can’t take this upon ourselves to gain our freedom. Who is with me?
[He’s fierce as he speaks. His eyes and set of his jaw show his determination. He shuts off the device, again taking his time with it, and waits for a reply.]

I don't doubt that I suppose. I just need to get back. And I want to learn about this place. But tell me. If there are many universes, how come I didn't know about them until now?

So people do go back. Otherwise, how do you know?

People do go back, yes. Unfortunately, there's no way to know who, or when.

[Her eyes lowered so he wouldn't see the hints of sadness behind them. Much as she loved being in Keelai...five years' time meant five years worth of goodbyes--or, worse, people disappearing on her before they had a chance to say goodbye.]

I'm not going to pretend I understand everything about how magic works, so I might even have some of this wrong, but...I think the person who originally started the spell that brings us here and sends us home is the same person who died a long time ago. But the spell is still working, somehow. And there's no way to control it now.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting back. Everybody goes back eventually, and time is stopped in your universe – or, technically, you get dropped back at the same point in your timestream that you left. Nobody at home will miss you. Problem is, when you go home, you don't remember Keeliai. That's what we're really trying to solve.

I'm not sure why you don't know about alternate universes. I don't think anybody is. Interdimensional events and the emergence of enhanced people definitely accelerated in the twentieth century, but we don't know why. I think the leading theory is that it has something to do with reaching a critical mass of population and technological development.

That's all very interesting and very illuminating. The thought of going back to the time I left with no one missing me is a comfort, but how does anyone know that's the case?

I see... yes that's what they said at the welcome center. It's just a lot to process. So how does the magic usually manifest? What forms does it take?

[So not the person to be asking...she she merely shrugged.]

That depends on the magic.

If you go back to the Welcome Center, actually, the woman who runs it? Zatanna? She's not only been here longer than I have, but she knows more about magic than anyone, as far as I know. I've seen her cast all sorts of spells, from changing clothes to moving things around to flying.

[Not counting the time when magic went awry and chaos reigned for about a week. It probably wouldn't have been fair to Zatanna to make such a first impression indirectly.]

[Oh, this is too much fun. Devin laughs again, more sharply this time.]

It's a very long and unpleasant story. Suffice it to say that it's definitely blasphemous, but definitely true. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I don't know how comfortable I am with that. Mostly, I want to know what to expect.

How comfortable you are with what she can do? Or talking to her?

The gist of things is that we passed through the dreaming plane from our original worlds from a lingering bit of magic that Tu Vishan used to summon Foreigners here originally.

Because people who disappear and then come back sometimes come back with new memories from their universe. Everybody who does says there's no time gap at home. That was how we were told the spell works – so far, it's been right.

So all we have to do is find a way to control it... To find a way to make it not random. Surely that can't be impossible. How long have you been here? Have you gone back?

Dreaming? I don't understand. Can we find a way to wake up?

Not either, I suppose. But, if it's what learning requires I will do it. And I find her at the college? Is that correct? I'm not accustomed to women holding such positions.

If you can figure that out, you will definitely be the biggest hero on the turtle.

The problem is, it's a legacy spell. Everyone who was involved in creating it or running it is dead, and nobody really knows what kind of magic they were using to begin with. But if you want to look into it, no one's going to stop you.

I've been here three years, plus the year we were all trapped in the Dreaming. Milyn has a way to show you some of your future back home, and I did that, but I haven't been zapped out yet.

No, no - there are three planes of existence. This one we currently inhabit, Death, and the Dreaming. We pass through the latter to reach here.

[She shook her head and immediately chose to let that 'not accustomed to women...' line slide. He would be in for a rude awakening soon enough.]

If you're really uncomfortable, then tell her. I can't promise how she'll react, but I know she should be able to understand that not everybody likes magic as much as she does.

I was facing my own firing squad when I left. I have no need to see my future. I know it. You may well ask why I'm anxious to get back, then. It isn't that I have a death wish. It's the fact that I have to get back for the sake of the people who fought by my side.

Are you saying that I passed through death then? That makes more sense. I'm sorry. This is all strange to me. You must think me a little dim.

I'm not uncomfortable. It's just strange to me. I was welcomed, but I confess I understood very little and was too much in shock to ask many questions.

You're not the first person to be in shock when they arrive here. It's alright. And you have plenty of time to ask questions now.

Yes. I'm grateful to you and to everyone for helping me.

I know that they are just like humans. Some good; some bad. They have varying degrees of liking us or not. I work with the less fortunate. Perhaps that skews my view, but I see the best and the worst of them, I think.
