[Toro is a bit haggard from waking up from what he last remembered and finding himself in the grand hall of some other world—really, other dimensions? And here he had thought he’d never see one for himself—but not knowing how he had gotten there. The kedan had explained some to him, but they couldn’t tell him what had happened to Pappy. He sits in the chair in front of the console and works on figuring out how the computer works because it’s not like the ones he knows. Everything is just—too different. But if he’s here, maybe someone else he knows is, too. He's lucky he figured out how to work the radio-computer-camera-thing. Even if it took an hour...or two.]

Guess now I can check “traveling to another dimension” off my list of things to do before I retire. [Have a guy who looks like he’s barely into adulthood—just don’t judge the book by its cover. He runs his hand through his hair, his laugh is a bit awkward, tired.] “Get stuck on another world” wasn’t on there, but you learn to deal with the curveballs.

Torch, if you’re here, too, give me a yell, okay? [He really wants to make sure he’s okay. He doesn’t know what happened to him after they were both sprayed with that chemical. There was a fog, like he was seeing everything in a haze and couldn’t do anything about it. Torch—he doesn’t know what they did to him.]

To everyone else…Name’s Toro—not that probably means much to anybody here if we are all from a bunch of different worlds—and it’s a…really something to be here. I didn’t even know they could get computers this small and still make ‘em do anything worthwhile. Keep expecting to find a room that’s got the real one hidden somewhere and this one is just for show.

At least some things here are the same as they are back home. Good ones at least.

[He wrinkles his nose, he should really get used to people taking his name like that and yet...] I didn't choose it myself, it just kind of stuck.

I'd kill for a cute dame tour guide right about now, long as she'd actually answer questions. Got 'that's the Emperor's business' about twenty times from these kedan guys. [He weaves easily through the sector, calculating a different route back to Earth than the one he took to Wood (old habits die hard). It's an easy thing for him to fall into again, leading the way and Toro following his lead. He's always considered himself the more experienced one, though who knows if that's even true anymore since Toro has four years on him. Still, he plays it casual and they make decent time to the Earth Sector and the one level suite the kedan said was his.]

I challenge you to find one problem that can't be solved by punching Hitler in the face. You can't think of one, right?

... Oh wait... I guess any problem created by the Red Skull... Punch him too.

Anyway, mutants are the coolest people ever, pretty much. I mean, there's the whole genetically superior thing or whatever, but all you need to know is that we're people with powers.

Oh, now Red, you should have just said so! Punching him in the face never gets old. [Not that he did it all that often, but there was that one time.]

And I still don't get it. I know plenty of people with powers and we don't call ourselves mutants. Is that some new slang for superheroes?

Sure thing! Leo Valdez, at your service. If you're fifty years too late then that would make you from the 1950's or so. Post-World War II. Oh man, where do I start? I guess with the computers, since we're already talking about that stuff!

[He talks really animatedly, hands waving around, eyes bright with excitement, as he explains all about computers] So the first commercial computer appeared at around 1951, called the Ferranti Mark 1, which uses random access Williams tubes for primary storage and a magnetic drum for secondary storage. It could compute things, basically, but that's about it, plus it's just really huge and you wouldn't even want to know. A few more computers were released after that, including the first IBM mainframe computer and the first ever disk storage unit, also by IBM. It could store like five megabytes of data which is laughable in our century but I guess it's a super huge deal back then. Anyway all those things were the first generation computers, but they were replaced by second-generation computers that used way less power when transistors replaced the vacuum tubes, and the most popular of these was the—surprise!—IBM 1401. Now the disk data storage units of these second generation computers could store like millions of letters and digits so that was another pretty big deal back in the 60's—

[All this stone is actually a little worrying for him because Tom doesn't like feeling so cut off from the air, but it's better than being surrounded by wood. He gives a little whistle.]

Quite a place you got here. Makes me wonder how big this turtle is. Everything's so different between the Sectors.

[There are plenty of windows in the place, at least. He's actually going to go open a couple to air the place out a little.]

Yeah, I'm real thrilled. [He's not thrilled at all.] Seems pretty big so far, we're probably lookin' at more Sectors like that and then that palace we got dragged outta.

Sounds like a plan. I need to find my partner, if he ended up here too, but meeting up would be swell while I'm figuring out how things work around here.

Joe, you never let the papers do that. If you don't come up with one on your own, they will give you the dumbest name ever and you'll never live it down. They still call me The Flaming Kid and it's been almost ten years already.

[Well Toro is usually the one doing the rambling, but he's never gone on as long as this guy. He wonders if he's forgotten to breathe and that is way more information that he ever needed. Who cares what year a computer was made in? That wasn't the question he'd asked.]

[Tom looks it over and then takes a seat when he finds out, flipping the chair around so he can prop his chin on the back of it.]

It looks like it could even be bigger than New York City. How'd they manage to fit all of this on the back of a turtle? Magic's gotta be involved. Hopefully the good kind.

Must be a pretty big turtle. If this is some kinda... I dunno, other world, I guess it's possible they've got weird stuff like that. And is magic ever the good kind?

Your partner? Err, which one? [History books mentioned two.] I can let you know if I run into them.

Well, yeah, but punching him isn't really all that impressive anymore. I mean, everybody's done it at least once. Probably more for you. Hitler though, that's like a once in a lifetime chance.

No, we're different. I mean- Yeah, some of us are superheroes too, but different. Mutants are born with their abilities. We didn't get them through science or magic or whatever other ways people get powers.

...Yeah, that still doesn't make much sense to me. I've had at least some of my powers for as long as I can remember, and Fishface is Atlantean--or half or something because really, Atlanteans are blue, nothing explains Namor half the time. Sure, not everybody is born with powers, but why come up with another name for it? They already call all of us superhumans.

[Vic nods.] I haven't seen any Human Torches here yet but if he does show up, I'll point him your way.

I guess I was asking for it anyway, a big 'S' on my chest. It's not my fault that my house's shield looks like the English S though does it?

[He chuckles a bit] What's wrong with the flaming kid? I don't think it's that bad. You're a superhero as well then?

Hey, who knows. We've known a guy or two who did okay with it. It's usually the crazy scientists we've got to worry about.

Yeah, yeah, it was great when I was 16. Try being 25 and the papers still call you "Kid." It's the pits. You know how many girls think they're too old for me and I'm older than them?

[Looking young is one thing. It wouldn't be half as bad if they'd stop acting like he never aged past 16.]
