[Toro is a bit haggard from waking up from what he last remembered and finding himself in the grand hall of some other world—really, other dimensions? And here he had thought he’d never see one for himself—but not knowing how he had gotten there. The kedan had explained some to him, but they couldn’t tell him what had happened to Pappy. He sits in the chair in front of the console and works on figuring out how the computer works because it’s not like the ones he knows. Everything is just—too different. But if he’s here, maybe someone else he knows is, too. He's lucky he figured out how to work the radio-computer-camera-thing. Even if it took an hour...or two.]

Guess now I can check “traveling to another dimension” off my list of things to do before I retire. [Have a guy who looks like he’s barely into adulthood—just don’t judge the book by its cover. He runs his hand through his hair, his laugh is a bit awkward, tired.] “Get stuck on another world” wasn’t on there, but you learn to deal with the curveballs.

Torch, if you’re here, too, give me a yell, okay? [He really wants to make sure he’s okay. He doesn’t know what happened to him after they were both sprayed with that chemical. There was a fog, like he was seeing everything in a haze and couldn’t do anything about it. Torch—he doesn’t know what they did to him.]

To everyone else…Name’s Toro—not that probably means much to anybody here if we are all from a bunch of different worlds—and it’s a…really something to be here. I didn’t even know they could get computers this small and still make ‘em do anything worthwhile. Keep expecting to find a room that’s got the real one hidden somewhere and this one is just for show.

[Victor offers a little smile.] "Get stuck on another world" seems to add itself to everyone's list. It's sneaky like that.

[He thinks for a moment.] By Torch...do you mean the Human Torch? And if so, which one?

[Wow, this kid sure does look like maybe he should be living with Namor. Did Fishstick get a new partner and not mention it? He didn't think Atlanteans came in anything except like...blue if you were arrogant princes with bad breath.

Which? There aren't any other Torches. Just The Human Torch. Unless you mean me, but I'm pretty sure I'm not asking for myself. Does Jim Hammond ring any bells around here?

[Funnily enough, Vic did actually live with Namor for awhile. Sort of.]

Jim Hammond does ring a bell. [Victor takes a breath.] He's the original Human Torch and a pretty intimidating guy. [Vic's met him.] Where I come from there's another guy using the codename.

I'm Victor, by the way. Nice to meet you.

Another guy? Then...What happened to Pa--Jim? Is he all right? Why would he give that name to anybody else?

[Someone who isn't Toro anyway. How could this guy live in a world where Jim wasn't the Human Torch anymore?] Your world sounds strange enough already.

Well, I think we're from the same world. Or at least really similar ones. But I'm from farther into the future...the year 2012. [Which he hopes answers the 'what happened to Jim' question. Even if he did come back from the 'dead'...twice. Comics.]

Two thousand-what? [His mind has been completely blown.] Criminy, that's something. I haven't done the time traveling thing myself, but Jim says it's a trip. I can't even imagine "2012." Do you have flying cars yet? Did the All-Winners ever get back together? I kept telling ol' Fishface we would.

Two thousand twelve. [He gives a little smile.] It is a huge trip from what I'm told. There are flying cars out there for the superhero and super spy types but most people keep the wheels on the ground. I think it's safer that way anyway. [He shrugs a little, rubbing the back of his neck.] I don't know if that ever happened, sorry.

Fishface is Namor, right?

Wow. That's...wow. [This is all so unbelievable. And he's fought time-travelers before. He just never really had the time to ask for details.]

So you know him, too? Talk about crazy. You some kind of superhero? You sure do look the part.

Wow seems fitting.

[He nods.] I do. I used to live on an island that was attached to the new Atlantis. I was sort of on a team with him. [Vic smiles at the question.] I try to be. I'm still in training technically.

Training? You look more than old enough to me to be out there. Did they raise the age limits on when you're allowed to save the world? [He looks young, but, hell, Toro was in the business at 16 and Bucky about the same.]

I'm sixteen. [He laughs a little.] Yeah, the older heroes try to but we tend to end up caught up in stuff anyway. And sometimes we go out to do stuff without technically getting any permission first. I don't mind getting training though. It's been useful.

Guess there's probably enough older ones around you now that they forget that being young doesn't mean you're too young. [He eyerolls a bit there because really, some adults were dumb.] Captain America wasn't that much older than you when he got started.

But I guess if you're getting something out of it, it's still better to get real experience. Training only gets you so far, believe me.

Something like that. [He agrees that the adults can be dumb. Very dumb.] I know, he's said as much.

I believe you. Sometimes you've just got to improvise beyond what training gives you. There's plenty you just can't train for too.

You said it. [Tom sometimes forgets he is an adult now. He blames it on the fact that the older team members still treat him like he's not even legal yet.]

So Vic, what's your team like? All of them heroes-in-training like you?

The ones in my class are. I'm part of the X-men training squad. The rest of the team is the older X-men who are training us.

X-men? Kind of a weird name for a team. Why not just call yourselves the Extreme Team?

It's kind of short for Extraordinary Men. But also named after our founder who's last name starts with an X.

Ah...gotcha. [It makes a bit more sense now.] X's Men would'a just sounded cheesy. I told Maddie that All-Winners was too, but the papers liked it.

Perfect team names are so hard to come by.

We've got some good ones in my time period. The Avengers, Young Avengers, and Fantastic Four come to mind.

"Fantastic Four"? Boy, that is funny. Don't tell me there was really five of 'em. [That actually gets a chuckle out of him. Thanks, Victor.]

Sometimes there's been more but it's been four most of the time. Including the guy calling himself Human Torch in my time. [He's happy to help brighten someone's day.]

[He's not sure how to feel about the fact that some guy had Torch's name. Some guy who likely isn't related to them at all. It feels a little to much like being replaced.]

The future must be a doozy.

That's one way to put it. [Victor chuckles.]

So, need any help getting settled in here?

Yeah, tell me about the folks around here. What are the kedan really like? They weren't all that helpful when I was asking questions.

Not helpful is fitting. For the most part they're nice enough like any other people. They're a bit on the weird side but not dangerous aside from the gangs out there. And the few that hate us just because were got brought here.
