[A device clicks on, and a face appears on the network: a thin one with a large nose and brown messy hair. And glasses. Needs the glasses to see, you know. He grins, all teeth.]

[He's not really saying that to anyone in particular. Don't worry, happens all the time. You'll know if he's speaking to you directly. Most likely.]

Never seen this before. Well, seen things like it, but nothing's ever quite the same in two places, yeah? Bit rubbish that everything in here's made of wood, makes my screwdriver a bit obsolete, but still...

[He laughs, and steps back from the device, standing with his hands on his hips. He's in his suite in the Wood Sector. Pretty nice place, if you ignore the lack of sonic-ing abilities.]

Right. So. I'm the Doctor, just the Doctor, thank you, and I suppose I was brought here, same as all of you. Now who's got something interesting to tell me about their time here?

[A pause, and time to ruminate over a question that's been in his mind since he got here.]

And does anyone know what this planet's base is? Doesn't seem like most other ones. A bit harder, strange in places. What's it made from?

Of course it is sentient. [As if there would be any other sort, he says, like he's been here ages. But it makes sense to him, anyway.]

He is rather -- well, quite ill at the moment, however, and we are trying to see what can be done for him.

Brilliant. [He still wants to know if you can speak to it.]

That's not so brilliant. What have you found out so far?

It has happened before, to other turtles, but not very much more than that. He does communicate with us, from time to time.

So this isn't the first turtle? Hmm.

[He thinks about that for a moment.]

But it does talk to you. Brilliant, that. How d'you know the this turtle's not the first? What happens to everyone when it dies?

As far as I have gathered, no.

[A shrug.]</small< I am afraid I cannot tell you, monsieur, as I do not know it myself. This is a rather depressing welcome, however, I am sorry. I am called Combeferre, it is a pleasure to meet you.

Combeferre, that's got a nice ring to it! Combeferreeeeeeeee, Combeferre. Hm.

Well, like I said, I'm called the Doctor. I wouldn't worry too much about the welcome too much, if I were you. I've had worse.

[There's a slight laugh.] Ah, well thank you.

Have you? I am sorry, in that case. I know it is not -- entirely pleasant here, at the moment; but it is certainly better than what awaits me at home.

[He shrugs. All in a day, really. Or, the best approximation of a day that a Time Lord can have. But he's much more interested in what Combeferre has at home.]

What's that? You're nineteenth century French, so I'd say some sort of Revolution, yeah?

Ah, yes, my friends and I fought on the barricades in 1832. Unsuccessfully.

[Here's a sympathetic wince. Ouch.]

Yeah, but you stood up for what was right, though, didn't you? People will remember that.

So I am told, yes. [There's a smile.] It is not all bad, many of my friends are here as well, and we were told a republic did come to pass not so very long after our deaths.

Yeah, France gets there eventually. As does everyone else. Takes some longer than others, of course. Just all a part of life.

Progress has truly come, then? [He's trying not to beam, it's not really working.]

[The Doctor smiles back at him. He doesn't have the heart to say that it doesn't solve everyone's problems.]

Well, progress, you know, always moving forward, that's the universe.

Why, of course it is. Even on other planets as well, though? [He's pausing a moment to consider, here, looking thoughtful.]<

Now that it occurs to me, I have met a man here calling himself the Doctor, before. He did not look like you, however, but -- you travel to different planets, am I correct?

Don't know about other planets, really. They all find some way of governing, though. Can't say it's my place to change their system if it works for them.

[The Doctor nods.]

Yeah, that's right. You probably met a different version of me. An older one, I think. He have a bow tie?

He did, yes. He was telling me of a time he went to Ancient Rome.

Oh, Ancient Rome, eh? Did you learn anything from it? His story, I mean?

Only a little more what Ancient Rome was like. It was quite fascinating, really.
