[The Ororo that sits in her chair as the console comes online is not happy. She is soaking wet and wrapped in a towel that says she's fresh from the shower. The air about her has dropped numerous degrees by the way her breath frosts and the fact that the wet mop of hair half plastered over her face is starting to frost at the tips.]

They were cute. Cuddly. I could like the cuddly Furby angle. But this?

[She thrusts out her hand, in which she has fisted a lot of wet tribble fur.]

No. That's too far. They clogged my shower. This means war.

[With an irritated noise, she throws the sopping wet handful of tribble fur on the console surface, then points at the screen.]

This is officially crisis-level important. What're we doing about it? Because I'm about to make it look like Christmas out there and I could use a hand.

[With a disgusted noise aimed at the fur, she turns off the console. Replies'll come as she gets ready.]

A whole heck of a lot. Maybe it's all sunshine where you're from, but I've seen the Man do twisted things.

Then why, pray tell, are they still there at all? Those who do not serve their people have no place governing.

Beats me. [Said with a shrug.] They get voted in somehow, so they get to keep playing god.

[I mean, not that ponies can't vote, but.... can they?]

On the local level, certainly, but not nationally. We should hardly ever get anything done ere we needed a new leader.

[She's not talking about potential terms of office. She's talking about lifespans.]

Most nations on our world are ruled by a monarch. Equestria is the only diarchy. [Though really, it was pretty much a monarchy for the last thousand years. Luna ignores that.]

Diarchy? Like, two kings?

[That's some weird stuff going on there. Ororo is somewhat suprised by the comment, but recovers.]

Man, we ditched the whole royal angle like two centuries ago. That still works for you?

[Awkward. She thought she'd made that clear.]

And it's all a 'divine right to rule' kind of deal?

[You had, Luna. It's just that Ororo didn't quite put those notes together, what with the whole TALKING PONY deal she had to adjust to first.]

[It's a bit of a long history. Equestria has passed through many rulers in its time. Well, simplify it.]

Equestria was conquered by a cruel tyrant, Discord, some centuries before our birth. We challenged and overthrew him.

And then took up the reins just because?

[Pun intended.

Ororo's curious, she admits; this conversation has devolved from ANGRY ABOUT TRIBBLES to a strange level of history combined with philosophy.

What's got her attention at the moment is the idea that someone'd overthrow a tyrant and not do the whole democratic thing -- since that's kind of what America says it did.]

Why not give the power to the people-- er, the ponies?

[And the pun goes almost completely unnoticed.]

The members of the previous ruling council were long dead, and their descendants scattered. There was no one else, and besides there was no time to look, with the dragons and the griffons at our borders.

And everyone was okay with that?

[She's just trying to understand.]

No angry mobs demanding a vote after it all quieted down? Just... peace?

Well...yes. [From her tone, Luna clearly doesn't see why this is so surprising.]

[By her phrasing, it's pretty obvious that it definitely IS surprising to her though.]

That's so not how it's worked where I came from. Last time there was a big upset, we kicked off the whole democratic deal.
