Right. So. That--and you all know exactly what I'm talking about, don't pretend you don't--but that? That whole incident? That is why you don't say the name of things you don't want showing up at your doorstep. Words have power. Names have a lot of power, and true names? True names can be used to kill. Whoever called that Thing--thanks a lot! If anyone needs me, I've got some potions to prepare before going to see if that Thing is actually in the city or if it was just projecting itself psychically.

[As she cuts it, you can hear her grumbling about "stupid mortals" and "honestly, don't you people watch television or read?"]

I don't know much about it either, honestly. I know it's evil, it can influence otherwise harmless kedan, and it requires sacrifices or at least likes them, but that's all I really know.

I do not understand the expression.

[It is an expression, right? Because telepathy he can understand. Magic is a bit too abstract for him.]

Do you know how it might influence these kedans? It would be helpful to know if someone is affected or not.

[And maybe they could find a way to break whatever control this Malicant has on the kedan. They save the kedan and possibly find out something useful about their enemy. Win-win.]

Oh, it isn't one. I'm quite serious--if I meet the man who was dumb enough to do that, he will be furry or possibly slimy. Its influences sound more like mind control to me, honestly, so it's probably not easy to figure out what's happening to the kedan.

How would you do that?

[Because potions and witchcraft? Not exactly a thing where he's from.]

I see. Then it would control the kedans telepathically instead of through the introduction of a drug or coercion. That is very tricky.

Magic? How else would I do it?

There was a drug...something going on a while back but I don't remember if it was connected to that Thing or not.

[He raises his eyebrows in surprise.]

I am not an expert but perhaps this drug could make them more likely to obey the suggestions.

[The idea of someone exploiting others that way, using telepathic control over other living things, makes him feel sick.]

And yes, magic. I'm a magician--and I don't mean one that pulls rabbits out of hats.

The only way to know would be to take blood samples and such. I doubt the infected would allow it willingly.

Don't worry, most people don't. A few days here, however, and you get used to all sorts of magic.

For instance, a year here may only be one second in our respective worlds. The way time works may not be the same in every universe. Time is relative.

I suppose demonstrating telepathy is not so easy to see over the network. Is it dangerous to do so against something so sinister?
