[Suddenly, there's an unfamiliar voice on the network. Young, male, probably prepubescent and very, very familiar to some residents of Keeliai.]

These are some seriously nice digs. It's hard to believe that they have so many rooms "just in case," so I'm guessing this might be little more common than I was lead to believe. Do they employ kedan to wander around the Shell's Edge, plucking people out of the ocean? I wonder what you'd put on your resume: Plucker of Maybe Dead People Out of a Magical Ocean?

[The joke sounds slightly strained, but joking tends to make him feel a little more at ease.]

Anyway, I got the basic rundown from those kedan. Very friendly guys-- at least I think they were guys. But it'd be nice to have confirmation from more than one person. No offense to them, but I like cross-checking my sources.

And while we're on the subject: does anyone know anything about the Emperor? The kedan didn't speak about him too much.

Ah... I don't know if they have aspirin here. But I think Bruce means to fix that.

It's definitely not something I'd want to see again.

If anyone can fix it, it's Bruce. I hope they at least have coffee.

[Seeing as how aspirin and coffee are two important Bat-staples, being zero for two wouldn't be a good thing.]

They've got... stuff that's caffeinated and close to coffee. But...

It's definitely possible, but I wouldn't say it's all that likely.

But it tastes completely awful?

Some day, whether here or at home, you come tell me you said that. [She disbelieves the 'unlikely.']

Not awful. It's just not coffee.

Good thing we didn't make this a bet. [He's not laughing, but she can probably hear him smiling.]

Is it like that for everything? I mean, is all the food totally foreign?

I try not to fleece kids, especially not ones whose Dad is a pain in the neck. [He has the benefit of seeing her smirk.]

I hear the cows have feathers. I haven't seen it first hand to verify.

I hope the pigs don't have wings, at least.

[Lois laughs. Finally, someone who follows!]

I don't know. If the cows have feathers and the pigs don't, the pigs might start to feel left out. They seem to have first rights, after all.

Maybe chicken-cows and pigs here have some sort of rivalry.

Maybe the kedan who raise them hold races at the county fair.

I wonder if they would ride the cow-chickens. I'd hope they wouldn't use them in battle at least. Not exactly the least terrifying steed.

Not terrifying, but if they can fly, aerial troops are always an advantage.

Now that I think of it, are there people to have a war with? I didn't see much in the way of civilization on my way in.

[Now she sobers.]

There were gang wars--damages were pretty heavy, and I'm fairly certain some of us... guests, newcomers, whatever got abducted. Others of us got drafted into service, as it were.

Yeah, I heard about that. It sounds like it got to be really dangerous for Kedan and the rest of us alike.

I'd think that'd make it worse. I mean, having people the gangs already don't like fighting with the police against them.

Funny how the head of the police didn't seem to care much about that possibility.

[The voice of cynicism.]

You think they might be setting us up?

Hell if I know. I think we're supposed to be protectors somehow, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Protectors? What makes you say that?

Word on the street seems to be that whatever spell brought us here was picking out protectors. Against what threat I really couldn't tell you.

They're gathering an army? That's not ominous at all.

Do you buy it? The story about gathering protectors.
