[ Guess whose internal almanac confirmed that today is officially the first day of Autumn? That's right, this guy! Who's currently bouncing around his treehouse like an over-caffeinated grasshopper while Baby Tooth peeks in the corner of the console screen with an expression like welp that's Jack for you. Whether viewers can perceive them, especially the newer arrivals, will remain to be seen. ]

WHOOOHOOO! Goodbye Summer, goodbye! Have a good vacation! Don't hurry back!

[ And then with a final whoop of joy, the feed turns off! Yeah, that's all he wanted to share. ]

Give me a few, alright? I need to go grab my jacket. [Just in case impromptu hugs were a part of this deal. Because she had a feeling impromptu hugs were going to be a part of this deal.] Want me to bring anything while I'm at it?

[ Jack makes THE MOST DRAMATIC SIGH EVER about her having to get a jacket, but nods. ]

Umm... a needle and thread, if you have some!

I'm not even going to ask. Yet.

[Unless you want her to accidentally catch hypothermia, deal with it.]

[She shuts off her camera and proceeds to grab both the jacket and the needle/thread combination. Because it's Jack, she automatically reaches for the colors she knew his hoodie, pants, and shirt to be. Blue, brown, and white. Call it woman's intuition.]

[Because she had to actually carry stuff, she took the long way around. Knocking on his door within the next five minutes.]

[ If he's surprised by her arrival by door, he doesn't show it -- or maybe it's just overshadowed by the seemingly boundless outpouring of energetic joy. When he opens the door to let her in, he's already shucked his blue hoodie and it's sitting on the table turned inside out, with Baby Tooth a small moving figure under the cloth. ]

Cocoa's almost done!

[Music to her ears.]

[She grins at the sheer radiation of excitement and energy, sparing a pitiful glance at the moving hoodie. It only took a brief survey of the room to guess what was happening.]

I've heard of girls borrowing their guy friend's hoodies before...but the least you could do is find something closer to her size.

[ He's even making it on the stove! ~~Don't ask how many pots of burned milk it took to get this right.~~ And there's a distinctly cinnamon tang to it. ]

Close! I'm putting in some extra material for her, since she likes to ride on that side.

[...okay, that was unexpectedly sweet. Even for him.]

That explains the needles and thread. Good thing I picked out the right colors.

[She crosses the room, closing her eyes and inhaling the sweet scent in the air. It was more than just chocolate.]

Smells good. Cinnamon?

[ There's nothing he won't do for those he dotes on, right Zatanna? ]

Cinnamon and something else.

[Right. Just like there's nothing she would ever do that could possibly discourage said doting.]

What?

A secret ingredient!

[ Baby Tooth emerges from the hoodie with a cloth tape measure, holding it up to show she'd gotten whatever measurement she was after. ]

Ah, great job Baby Tooth!

So you're not going to tell me what it is, but you are going to tease me with the fact that it is something.

[How cruel.]

[She's just going to walk over here to Baby Tooth, where she'll be appreciated rather than mocked, and give a very welcome pat on her tiny head.]

You see how he treats me?

[ Zatanna gets a dry look from the faerie as though to say you've got it good and you know it because she may or may not have seen Jack buying some new tea for her. ]

You're welcome to go, I can drink all this cocoa by myself.

[ a disgruntled chirp ]

I mean, we. We can drink all this cocoa.

[Ugh. You're both against her. She sees how it is.]

Fine. I'll leave.

[Calling your bluff? After all, you were the one who wanted her to come over to celebrate the fact that Winter was coming. You know, eventually.]

[ The timer on the stove goes off, indicating the cocoa is ready. ]

Your loss if you do!

[You've been spending way too much time with her.]

Not if I take a cup to go.

You promised me cocoa, Frosty. And I still have that needle and thread you wanted. Trade?

[ He didn't hear you complaining! ]

Okay, okay. You've twisted my arm, we'll make a trade.

[ He turns the stove off and ladles out two mugs worth of cocoa. Hers, he leaves hot and blows on his own to cool it down to merely tepid. ]

[You must have ice in your ears, because she always complains. Constantly. Her life is suffering, you know.]

[Accepting the mug meant for her, she pulls herself onto a nearby table and dares a sip. It was the perfect temperature. Warm, but not too hot to mask the creamy, rich flavor of chocolate melted directly into the milk. Her eyelids fluttered shut, and she couldn't help the slight hum of pleasure that escaped her lips.]

...not bad.

[ Jack leaned against the counter and smiled, sipping his own. There was just enough warmth left in it to let him enjoy it as a "hot" beverage without being uncomfortable for him. ]

Sounds like high praise to me.

Well, I wanted to make sure it reached you all the way up there.

Something tells me your spirits have been up in the clouds ever since the clock struck midnight.

They have been! It's really weird but, it feels completely different now! And it's not the temperature because today's not any colder than yesterday but-- do you think it being summer had an effect on me that wasn't just because of the heat?

Could be.

[Or it could've been all the Drama that went on during that time too.]

I mean, if you're supposed to be Winter personified, it kind of makes sense for you to feel more than a little out of your Element during your polar opposite months. Kind of like moving to a new place for the first time. Or meeting somebody new and not clicking the way you might with others.

[ Shhh we don't talk about that. ]

I was thinking more like a dinosaur in a tar pit but we can use your analogy too.

[Right, right.]

...I'd say you were being melodramatic...but considering what you went through before you got that ice pack under armor of yours, I guess I could see that.

But, come on. There must've been one thing you liked doing this summer that you couldn't in Winter.

[ Jack laughs again, because it really was like a kind of armor when he thought about it; the metal links were like modern chainmail. ]

Maybe when I get home I'll ask Baba Marta if she's ever noticed that.

[ He sipped at his cocoa again, fingers patterning whorls of frost on the outside of the mug. ]

I liked going swimming with you.

[Her smile warmed, and--not for the first time--she felt that lingering ping of guilt in the back of her mind. She quickly pushed it aside in favor of taking pride in the fact that he was openly admitting to still enjoying the time they spent together, and the shenanigans she dragged him into, despite the season.]

See?

We can't exactly do that when it gets cold out. ...well, you might be able to, but there's only so many polar bear dives I can withstand.
