Everyone,

I've come across some information that you all need to know. However, I do not trust this network to be a stable line of communication.

Give me a location and I'll meet with you.

Let me know.

[Costigan shuffles some papers around on desk solely because he doesn't like addressing mass groups or being any sort of center of attention. Then he looks up to the video on the console, tense and scowling ever-so-slightly.]

Look, I'll make this short and sweet.

I'm head of the Foreign Division of the Police force here. With Evandau dead and the Commander missing, that makes me effective head of the police in any capacity, though most of the kedan know how to run themselves.

[He runs a hand through his hair.]

Whatever the hell we're facing, it's not- The gangs are getting worse. We have riots every once in awhile and people causing trouble and.. Fuck, you- you've seen it. We need more people. Either you want to help or you don't. It's that simple.

[ Bakura doesn't seem like a person who just lost a hatchling turtle. There's no evidence of lack of sleep or absence of focus... if anything, the thief looks equal parts busy and, as usual, antagonistic. ]

It's about time this place got interesting once again.

Has anyone bothered to ask the kedan whether they're happy to be out from under the yoke of tyrants? Other than that of the Foreigners, of course. Eshai at least had some sat-khert ib... but Evandau was just a waste of breath.

Though I suppose if we're trying for the trifecta of terrible rulers, we could always crown Malic--

[ Before he completes the name, jagged static begins to creep along the corners of the console screen that is visible to he and the viewers alike. Bakura stops, studying it for a moment. Then a sly grin appears and he speaks again, though this time it doesn't seem to be addressed to the Foreigners listening to the broadcast. ]

Hm, I knew you hadn't gone very far. What do we get if we guess where you really are?

[Annabeth is on the screen - she's cut up in a few places, like something shattered too close to her face, but it's healed over a few days; her expression is steely and hard. More bad news, and that's just brushing the surface.]

I know the location of Evastelei. I'm not telling you where. [She pauses. She hates potentially using the network like this - she knows Malicant must be watching, so part of that you is definitely at him. But she needs help here. There might be someone who can figure out what's up with Eva, or maybe even a way to help. It doesn't make it any less nerve-wracking.]

But she's unconscious. She has been, since our city-wide collective blackout. [Her mouth draws into a line. It's risky, admitting her state (again, because of Malicant; she never did figure out their exact connection). But nothing is going to change if she keeps it to herself. Maybe he already knows.] We need to wake her up. If anyone thinks they might - know something about magical comas, please tell me.

[She's also aware that her tone, her words, all of it implies some sort of relationship with Eva. For the first time she's somewhat admitting to it publicly, she's not quite so nervous. Maybe it's because she feels like she's been laying low lately, and there are more new faces around than familiar ones.]

[Gear isn't trying to hide who he is right now--that he's Gear, anyway--but he's also not that concerned with going video, so he doesn't. He's at one of the cafes to make this post, as he always does, sitting in a back corner while he also tests some programming in the console next to him.] Who is in charge around here?

Not the head keedan honcho, we all know who he is. Or you should by now. But who is in charge of the Foreigners around here? We don't really have any kind of democracy or cohesive polling system for major things going down except the network and it's quiet most of the time.

Who keeps track of everything? How do we know who's trustworthy and who we're supposed to be watching out for? Is there a common denominator around here that we can all go to? Someone who knows who is pooling resources where?

People are really good at working together around here when something bad or sketchy is on the rise, but I keep wondering if we should be doing more prevention, less clean-up. I know it's not easy to stick any one person in charge since we could disappear at any time, but maybe we need to have some central plan-keeper or provider in place? Someone or something to keep us all on the same foot that isn't just going back and review weeks or months of console records, if you know what I mean. That works, but it's so inefficient. [He's started rambling he knows and cuts himself off from adding anything else that isn't really explaining or adding to the conversation.]

Any ideas?

[ The video feed opens with not one Bakura but two, the first standing central to the screen and the other offset to the side and whose nervous posture indicates he's still trying to slide even farther away. Separately it would be easy to call them identical but side by side, there are differences; slight but present. The voice is the biggest giveaway though, as Bakura's bears almost nothing of Ryou's accent. ]

Pay attention:

There are, as you can see, actually two of us. I'm the one who thinks you're all expendable idiots and treats you accordingly, not him. So taking your anger at me out on the new arrival here without listening to him merely proves my point.

For those of you whom I so easily fooled by calling myself "Ryou"? This is the real one, so go... make friends or something.

[ At that, Ryou offers an awkward wave at the console screen. ]

[ OOC: Takes place following this post. Replies will come from both/either of them, unless specifically marked private to one or the other. Hello! [The video opens up to a nice shot of Ryou's smiling face, and he's even waving. He seems a little nervous, but it's not enough to deter him from pressing on. After all, if he's going to be stuck here long term he might as well get to know people.]

My name's Bakura Ryou, and I've been here fooor...about a week and a half. This only my second time using the network though, so it's nice to meet you all! I don't usually use things like this, but it's kind of convenient, huh?

[He's quite now, looking thoughtful and worried again. It's a few seconds before he starts up again.]

I enjoy playing games with my friends and cooking... I'm not sure why I was brought here though, because I don't think I'll be much help. The only wars I've fought in were imaginary.

[Ryou nervously fidgets, rubbing the back of his head. There's another awkward silence.]

Speaking of, I bought some tabletop games at the market, but I can't read the directions... Would anybody be able to translate them for me? I wouldn't mind paying for the trouble, since I know it's a lot to ask. [And a lot in general. The directions were quite a few pages long.]

[People may have been present at the meeting but Hawke knows there are more out there who want to help. There always is in times like these, especially given the audience. He knows their machines can no longer be trusted to secrecy, so instead he decides to use other means.]

So...I just talk at this metal knob then? Alright, I suppose I've done stranger things.

[He takes a moment to think on what he wants to say. Hawke does a lot better with witty banter than he does with speeches.]

Maybe some of you have already been told. Maybe others made it to our little get together. For everyone else, I hope you'll listen to me now.

I don't think I have to tell you that Evandau has been acting strangely lately. Plenty of others have probably done that for me. Trust goes both ways and at this point I'd be more trusting of a bandit with my coinpurse. Something foul is going on here and our whole reason for being in this city is to stop it. It's time we take action and see where this Knight's allegiance actually lies.

If you want to help then listen and wait. In a few days time we'll contact Evandau over the network and draw him to The Midnight Hotel, once he's inside surround the exits. Maybe we'll get lucky and this will all just end in a talk. If we're not, well, just be ready for anything. I'm not even going to pretend to know what will happen if things turn sour but I doubt it'll be pretty.

This isn't an assassination. If anything we're trying to save the self-righteous windbag whether he wants us to or not. The man might be a complete tool be he's our complete tool.

If you have questions you can find me in the Water Sector, Shui-Hao. I'll be waiting.

[Hawke steps away from the microphone with a relieved sigh. When it's all done, he heads back to the Water Sector in case anyone wants to find him. His week just keeps getting busier.]

[The camera turned on to...some oddly blurry camera work for a console that...is rooted to the ground. A few flashes of colors and a puff of smoke later, and the screen comes into focus, revealing a slightly-askew Zatanna. Very Blair Witch-style, puns aide, with a closeup of her noticeably hood-covered head as she leans into the camera. Despite the tinge of redness to her cheeks from the obvious cold in the room, she’s openly smiling.]

Come one, come all, to the coolest place in town.

...no, seriously. I’ve been in walk-in freezers that had weaker systems than this place. Feels pretty good. Better than a cold shower. Or polar bear dive.

For the record, we have nothing against polar bears, diving or otherwise.

[Jack leans into the frame beside Zatanna, also smiling and looking more alert and refreshed than he has over the last couple weeks since the weather has turned summery warm. ]

For the record, I never said we did.

[Point of clarification. She leans back, giving Jack the floor to speak.]

I know we've had a lot of people go back home lately, but we wanted to ask if anyone who's willing to help out at the Welcome Center as volunteers. I know some people are starting to get back to their regular jobs so it's as much or as little time as you can share.

If you feel like helping out, just drop by and see one of us.

[And, just before the screen shuts off, Zatanna briefly pops up for one last line:]

I wasn’t kidding about the AC, either! Anybody who needs a break from the heat outside, this is the place to chill.

((ooc: video or action options available; in addition, there's the Welcome Center Log for anybody who wants to head over there and mingle.  There'll be punch and pie!  maybe))

[To say things had been weird since Wan arrived would be a massive, massive, massive understatement. Several hours of just plain weird. He was finally at the house he'd apparently been assigned and it was nice.

...really nice. Nicest place he'd ever had a chance to sleep in.

But that wasn't why he was at the terminal, using it for the first time. No. He had weird things to ask about.]

H-hello.

[Wan gave an awkward wave.]

I'm new here and I was told I could use this to find out information if I had any questions. I have a few. They're about the turtle that found me and this strange feeling I've been having since I woke up. They're unrelated. The turtle was giving me a strange feeling, but I got that one sorted out.

Anyway, first about the turtle. Her name is Rio'era. She wanted to come home with me, but the home I was given was not the home she wanted to go back to. I mean, I can find her anywhere with the spiritual connection she's given me, but I- I'm not getting to the point. I just wanted to know if that was normal?

A turtle the size of a small house calling out to you when you get here and all that. The people that introduced me to the computers didn't mention anything about smaller turtle spirits doing that. They only mentioned the giant turtle spirit we're all living on right now.

The other question I have is about this strange feeling of... well, I'm not sure. It's like I can feel myself in two other places, but I can't pinpoint those places. I can just feel them. Out there.

Floating around.

...Somewhere.

[Wan quieted, trying to remember if there was anything else.]

Oh! I'm supposed to find a job! I've never had one in a human city before! So that's pretty exciting. If I can get one. How do I get one? Is there a place I can volunteer to go hunting outside the city or something? Cause I've done that before... sort of.

[So, it's April. Eponine has sobered up somewhat, gotten her wits about her, and realized she needed to actually go see Marius Pontmercy. And explain. And apologize for being a fool and asking him to kill her, for begging him to love her. It took what courage the girl had left for her to walk over to his suite, and when she knocked, the door swung inward revealing what she feared most. What he said he would not do.

An empty apartment.

You know how Eponine spent most of March on a bender?

She's... about to start it again.

When she finally appears in front of the camera this time, she has dark circles under her eyes, her skin sallow. She's nearly as skinny as she was when she first arrived, and there's a bottle of whiskey in her fist.

She speaks simply, without light in her eyes.]

Marius Pontmercy has gone home.

He has returned home where none of us shall be living, to perhaps June 7th, 1832. He will return to his beloved Cosette Fauchelevent. They shall be married.

[She takes a pull from the bottle.]

And he shall forget all about us.

About me.

[ Jack has mostly been flying under the radar during the past month, keeping to himself. Though he's worked regular shifts at the Fishing Shop and at the Welcome Center, when he wasn't there he was often nowhere at all, away from the city. He doesn't intend to address the recent exodus of people from the city, even though he's taken many of them like punches to the gut. Instead he keeps his tone light, and focuses on something that almost never fails to put some lightness back into him. ]

So fun fact: turns out the kedan have something a lot like "Take Your Kids To Work Day" from back home and there's a group that still need some volunteers. Anyone want to help out some kids and let them shadow you for a day?

Hi, um. Cassie here. I'm sorry that I'm with the bad news today, but...

[ Curtly: ]

Morning. Kyle Rayner; Green Lantern Corps. I’ve been here fifteen months. For those of you new here, hi.

[ He inhales, bites his lip, glad it’s an audio feed, before continuing evenly: ]

So, the stuff they feed us about there being three planes isn’t BS. [ a faintly amused noise ] We’re on the Life plane. The others are Death, and Dreaming, and they’re accessible with the right gateway. Our enemy is said to live in the Death plane and control the environment there. We can’t recreate the original portals we found when the turtle stopped at Sinbrilee, but even so I wouldn’t really recommend sightseeing [ unless someone’s highly inclined towards raising hell, but Kyle doesn’t mention that, not even as a joke. ]. The Dreaming plane seems pretty harmless so far. We’ve done some exploring, here’s what we’ve got:

1. Any injuries you sustain there won’t heal automatically when you come back. We don’t know about dying but if you can get hurt there, you can die there too.
2. It changes depending on your subconscious. If someone else is in there with you, they can affect your environment if they try hard enough. I’d advise building some mental defences: meditation, et cetera… especially if you’re from a world that doesn’t have telepaths. If you need a hand with this, call me.
3. Eating and drinking works normally.
4. Powers - any kind - don’t work reliably and sometimes don’t work at all. Neither does technology.
5. You can enter and leave using different gateways no problem, doesn’t matter how far apart they are, but if you’ve only got the one, I’d say use it to get out. There’s plenty more gateways than the ones we got for research, but we don’t know where they are, and for all you know you could end up at one on the ocean floor.
6. The runes for all gateways have to be exact. Scraping one, even barely, shuts it down.
7. Don’t fall asleep there. You get stuck in your own nightmares - or somebody else’s - and it’s a pain in the ass to get out.
8. If something lives there, it’s pretty good at hiding.
9. Time’s much slower. A few days there could mean a few minutes here.

[ Beat. ]

If anybody else has got research they’d like to share, we’d appreciate hearing it.

There’s sketch of a woman with harsh features, one leg, and a cane. Several maps, too, showing campaigns; one describing an assault on the Death plane, and a final description at the end regarding the explosions destroying the city. ]

[There are a lot of things Tess could talk about, if she was inclined. Bad things, mostly. The kinds of things that keep her awake at night, and plague her with nightmares when she does manage to sleep. Things from back home, things from the bottle, things that are really Ellie's to tell and not hers at all.

Death and loss and violence, and more death.

But fuck that. She's got something way more important to talk about. Like her hair.]

I found a gray hair today. [She twists her face into an approximation of disgust.] Can you believe that? So now I'm wondering if I should just dye it. [She tugs on a lock of her mousy brown hair - shinier and healthier than it was when she first showed up, that's for damn sure, but otherwise not particularly notable.]
