[A young girl--around 6 in age--is peering up at the screen. From her position, she looks as if she's on her tippy toes, trying to adjust the thing to actually look at her. At least her hair and eyes are distinctive enough to prove it's the good doctor.]

I'm usually 28. [Her voice is also squeaky and a little cute... Not her fault.]

I noticed I'm not the only one. This isn't going to be permanent, right?

... What do I even do until then? I can't work like this.

[Never mind food, reaching anything on the counters or higher tables, clothes, money, etc.]

[He glances over his shoulder, then shakes his head as he looks back.] Yeah. I'm fine so far.

Well, I'm a kid, so...

[She pokes her head up to see the screen.]

Honestly, my biggest problem is height. And being taken seriously as an adult, that's a big one.

I can't... reach anything...

I don't think you can be taken too seriously, but I don't think you need to. To my understanding, this is temporary. [He hopes.]

Do you have someone who can help or you want me to come by?

This better be temporary. Where did you hear that?

... [She thinks for a moment.] I hate to bother you, but... maybe just a really long stick would help or something. If you could bring something like that over.

[At least she doesn't have to worry about cooking, as she never could do that. The stairs are suddenly more of an issue, though, but that's also fine. Reaching the cereal in the top cupboard? Now that's an issue.]

[Costigan smiles a little and gives a nod.] Sure, yeah. Where are you? I'll find something.

[She decided to wait for him to hang up since it was unlikely she could reach the button a second time.]

[Costigan hangs up and heaves a heavy sigh for all the people suddenly left effectively handicapped by this magical disaster. It's only another supporting piece in his pile of reasons to hate all things supernatural. Being from the Wood Sector, though, it doesn't take him too long to find a decently shaped stick that can work for what the doc needs it for. Then he's immediately on his way over, not wanting to waste time.

Some fifteen to twenty minutes later, there's a knock on her door.]

[A latch sounds off and the door opens into a nicely kept home of the Earth sector. The person who opened the door, however, can only be seen once one looks down.]

Thank you for coming by. Can I get you anything?

[He can't help a small smile at the child before him. Costigan slips into the entrance left for him and then closes and locks the door behind him for her. The undercover holds out the forked piece of wood he found, roughly two and a half feet long with one branched end only a few inches long and the other nearly a foot and curved back, forming a sort of hook.]

I know it's not much, but I figured it should help.

[She smiled brightly to the gift. Yes, that'll do just fine.]

Thank you so much! I know it was an odd request, but I hate to bother someone every time I want to look in the pantry.

This whole place is odd. [He replies honestly, gesturing vaguely to mean the city in general. Then his hands are in his pockets as usual and he watches her with the stick, uncomfortable with her new age but unwilling to leave her stranded and helpless.]

You sure that's enough to get by with?

It should be. [Holiday leans the stick against the wall for the time being. She's used to working with some simple tools to do complicated work. This shouldn't be too different.]

Hopefully, this spell won't last too long. If it does... well, I'll get used to my new height by then, to say the least.

I know I didn't expect living on the back of a giant turtle, but this is whole other case entirely.

[Costigan ignores her remark about the turtle, preferring to gloss over the truth of that matter as much and as often as possible. Instead, he focuses on her former sentiment and gives a small nod.]

If it lasts too long, you can come stay at my place. [No kid should be living on their own, despite the many here that are, but even less so if it's someone used to being an adult. And a doctor at that; not exactly the street rugged type.]

[Oh. Having not expected such a generous offer at all, Holiday turns back to him in surprise, but slowly gives him a big smile.]

I'm sure I'll be fine on my own--I'm used to it--but thank you, anyway. I won't forget that.

I mean it. [He's dismissive of her gratitude to avoid the awkwardness of admitting his kindness and caring. Just like that, he's basically pretending it never happened.] Look, I need to get going. I'll see you around, alright?

You will, don't worry. Take care. If you need me for anything, just call. I owe you one.

[Costigan gives a dismissive wave for the same reasons as before.] Don't worry about it.

[Then he's turning to make his way out again, eager not to overstay his welcome.]

[She smiles and waves as he leaves. Holiday knows people a lot like Billy here, so she's still going to be thankful for his help.]

[ Permanent? Scoff! Scoff, madam! ]

Not if I can help it!

... [That sure is a lot of conviction. She blinks.]

Um... So... How are you going to fix it?

[ Whoa, let's not pull the cart before the horses just yet, lil' lady! 'How' will come... eventually. ]

Good ol' scientific ingenuity! [ Yeah, that's a good bullshit answer! ]

And luck, God help us... [In fact, luck is the key ingredient in this formula. ]

Luck would probably be better. I'm also in the field of science and I haven't discovered any aging formula that works that well.

... Really? [ Ooo another science person! McCoy is real interested now. ] What fields?

Right now, I'm focusin' on isolatin' any common resistant strains in those that weren't affected, but my sample is woefully minuscule until I find more patients...

That, and my equipment can only do so much without a real lab.

Nanotechnology, biochemistry, and medicine with a concentration in unnatural biological mutations. [It used to be EVOlogy, but that's still a quote from her résumé.] ... I don't really look it right now, but it's all true.

So, you're treating this like a virus and that the people who weren't affected may have a cure? ... How long have you been here?

[Holiday hasn't been here long, but one dance at the bottom of the ocean and a couple trippy adventures with an angel will make one wonder if medicine will actually treat something like this.]

[ Nanotechnology? That catches his attention. His last encounter with nanites was not a pretty one. ]

Well, I'm tryin' not to couch it too early since this is definite magic, somethin' I dunno a lot about, except bein' on the wrong end of it constantly. [ Yeah, thanks, Jim! ] But magic or not, I'm hopin' whatever is keepin' it at bay in some lifeforms is biological. That I can work with.

Unless it's mental, and then I'll be back to the drawin' board....

I hope you're right. A biological problem is one thing, but I haven't seen anything explained by biological means, or even scientific ones, since I arrived.

Then again, I've been here about two months now. Maybe you do more than I do... I hope you know more than I do. I'm not enjoying reliving my childhood.

A stepstool isn't a bad idea, actually. [Maybe she could just climb on things for the time being.]

I'm happy to know that not everyone is affected, at least. There are even some looking into a way to fix it all.
