[Hey there, network! Have a Spider-Man!]

So, those of you who know Spider-Man know how he's -- I'm-- always swinging around on webs, right? Well, truth of the matter is, I'm running short on the stuff and not entirely sure how to make more, so I need the help of some of our resident geniuses. I dunno, Tony Stark maybe? Somebody who's good with chemicals and technical stuff.

Let me know, I'd owe you big time.

Sorry. [And he is, but it's probably about to get worse.]

OK. There's this super tall tree-building in Wood Sector. Way taller than all the rest. Meet you there?

[He hesitates for just a second, considering. He's still recovering. But he can probably take it easy heading over there and then suit up and scale the tree once he got there.]

Super tall tree. Got it.

[Miles will be waiting at the top of the tree, wringing his hands and trying not to be nervous.]

[It takes a little longer than it would've otherwise, but soon enough Peter's up the tree and balancing himself on a branch toward the very top of it.]

I want you to know this now-- I have a lot of questions for you and I'm not letting you get away without answering all of them.

[Miles gulps, but he expected this.]

OK. You can go first, then.

Okay.

[He adjusts his position a little bit, trying to get as comfortable as possible around the strain in his side.]

First-- Who are you? And why are you, y'know, suited up?

[Miles looks around, but part of the reason he chose to be up so high is so no one would see them. He pulls off his mask.]

My name is Miles Morales. And as for the why, all that really depends on what was happening for you right before you came here.

[Aka he's not about to tell Peter Parker he dies unless he has to.]

[Miles. He'd spoken to Miles before. For a moment he can only stare as he starts putting all the pieces together in his mind.]

...It's because I died. [It's weird that it's so easy to say when his mask is on.] So you-- Did you like, take my place, then?

[OK so he knows. That makes things a little less difficult.]

Yeah. I got bit by a spider, and then you... died. And at your funeral Gwen Stacey told me what your uncle had said, about power and responsibility. So I started putting on the suit. Just a cheap knockoff of yours, at first. Then Spider-Woman found me and gave me this suit. From SHIELD. Then I met Gwen and your aunt and she gave me your old web shooters. But now I'm running low on fluid.

[Peter's quiet again for a moment. At your funeral. Those words alone raised a few more questions. Aunt May, Gwen… For whatever reason, he hadn't even wondered about what Jessica must be going through, to know that basically another version of herself had died...]

How long's it been? Since- Since my funeral?

It was... [Miles has to think...] …It was about a year between your funeral and when I came here, and I've been here about five months.

[He pauses, then adds,] It was a nice funeral. A ton of people showed up. I couldn't even get near the church.

[That gets him to look up, shocked.]

A ton of people?? Who-- How--?

[Aunt May couldn't possibly have been able to afford a big funeral. He doubted anybody from the Ultimates or SHIELD would've volunteered to foot the bill.]

Well, everybody wanted to, yanno, pay their respects. The service itself was likely just for family and close friends, but outside the church it was mobbed.

[Peter slumps, going from the usual Spider-Man crouch into a full on sit on the branch he's perched on.

Wow. Wow. He knew what had happened to him, but still… to hear it from someone else entirely is completely different.]

… You- said you met my Aunt May, and Gwen… How were they doing?

And MJ. They're good. They miss you a lot, you can tell. But Gwen and MJ have been really a big help to me.

[He's not going to mention the alternate universe Peter. One confusing revelation at a time, he thinks.]

[His heart essentially lurches and drops into his stomach at the mere mention of MJ. MJ. He misses her already, and for him it's barely been a week. But they're okay. That's what matters.]

Good. That's-- That's really good to hear.

And what about- Everybody else. The Ultimates were like, all over the place when I, y'know. And the guys I beat. What happened to them?

The Ultimates are still pretty all over the place. A bunch of terrorists attacked New York City at the same time as all the Ultimates were out West fighting other terrorists, and... it got complicated.

I'm not sure about the guys you were fighting. They haven't really shown back up since.

I don't think it's ever not complicated with them...

[Under the mask, Peter frowns slightly. He's not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.] Hopefully it stays that way…

So-- The Ultimates. Is Nick Fury back? Do you work with S.H.I.E.L.D. a lot?

Um, sort of? Like, Spider-Woman brought me in when I first started and I met Fury and stuff, and they gave me this suit. Then I went out to Wyoming with them. Since then, this crazy black sludgy monster guy came after my dad and... I haven't really had a chance to work with S.H.I.E.L.D.

[Oh great, now he misses his dad. With his mom gone, Jefferson would need Miles around even more. And even if time stops while he's here or continues with him still there or whatever, that doesn't change how he feels.]

[And here are some more questions in need of answers. As well as a brief flickering of "Hey, they never took me on field trips to Wyoming."]

How'd- uh- Spider-Woman take to meeting you? And--

[Wait.]

Wait, did you just-- A black sludgy monster?? Did it have like, shark teeth?

She was pretty pissed at first, I think. But she's gotten used to me once I proved I was serious.

Yeah, Gwen called it Venom?

[… Okay, that's a fair enough reaction, all things considered.]

Yeah. Venom's, uh- He's a real piece of work... Why would he go after your dad?

He thought my dad was Spider-Man. So I guess he was really after me.

[He gulps, thinking about following his dad to the hospital, about running into Venom there, about... about his mom.]

Oh, my God…

[Peter drops his head into his hands, shaking his head. He feels like this is his fault. He'd basically created Venom, in a way. And now because he hadn't been able to clean that mess up properly, he was going around hurting people who had nothing to do with him at all.]

I'm-- Sorry you had to deal with him. That- That shouldn't have landed on you.

[Okay so he's definitely not telling him about his mom. Not going to lay that kind of extra guilt on him. Not now.]

It's alright, man. I mean... It comes with the territory. I chose this. I could always quit, if that's what I wanted.
