[Iskierka is in her suite today, frowning at a hole in her wall, close to the floor. Through the hole can be seen the back legs and shell of a young turtle, and Iskierka huffs a moment, as she sees what her adopted progeny is up to. The turtle's happily munching away on a fine piece of cloth, draped somewhat artfully on a wall and pinned there.]

Yin! Do not eat that, it is not filling at all. [She abandons the console for a moment to attempt to hold the young turtle back, and then shoves the tapestry up a bit higher.]

Come along, Yin, we shall find you some fish or some plants; perhaps a stew -- may turtles eat stew? I suppose that Gong Su would know, but he is not here.

[Then her neck cranes back towards the console, still keeping a firm claw on the erstwhile Yin.]

Does anyone know what young turtles might eat?

That is only one chou, you know. Used together, they mean something very different, pet.

I suppose that it can be at that. Ironically, English has always seemed particularly difficult to me. All of the tenses and the words that sound alike.

It is not so difficult; but we learn languages in the shell.

And it would stand to reason you have much larger brains, more room for information of that sort. How many languages do you know of now?

Oh -- Turkish, of course, and English, and some French and Polish, and I know a bit of Durzagh, it is a dragon-tongue.

Turkish? I think you are the first I've met who knows any of that. And dragon tongues...That must be entirely different from our human speech. I never had considered you must have one of your own before. An arrogance on my part, though not intended.

[It does make sense. really, that feral dragons WOULD exist, now Enjolras considers it. He HAD sort of come up with this idea, in his head, that all dragons worked with human but he sees how stupid that sort of thinking is, now. Still.]

Are there many feral dragons where you come from? Temeraire has mentioned a few times that you are not always treated fairly, and finding arguments for such things. If it could be proved that their societies do well...I think that could help a good deal in gaining dragonkind some equal rights. Not that I should speak of such as if I know your world at all, but the thought DOES occur.

There are some, yes, but they do not generally live in our coverts. Some of them are sent to the breeding grounds, in England, but Arkady and his lot came from Asia before I was hatched. I do not much know what their societies are like.

[Pff, rights, who cares about those. Clearly she doesn't, much, from the dismissive tone there.]

Grantaire was here for a time as well, though we managed to barely miss each other. He had the habit of calling everything into question. For hours at a time. And sometimes speaking of nothing at all. It was a bit frustrating, certainly.

Oh, Arkady is not like that, he is just -- [A little huff.] Irritating, from time to time, but he makes a decent companion when we are hunting prizes.

I suppose that IS better than a terrible one under those circumstances. I could not imagine it myself, doing such a thing with someone I disliked. [Taking prizes, he imagined as a child, during those years when he wanted to be a pirate though.]
