Hello..?

[Have yourself a twelve year old girl testing the water on the shiny new thing and mumbling to herself a little as she does.]

...I hope I'm doing this right.

[Oh right. The people can hear her. Sarah takes a deep breath and gets to talking.]

I uh, gotta say, this is some real crazy stuff going on. I don't even know where to start makin' sense of any of it. The Kedan people, the ones that work here? I think they work here. Live here? I dunno. They explained a lot of stuff but I'm still trying to wrap my head around even being here.

[Sarah pauses. When she speaks again it's with a little less certainty.]

Do they ever make mistakes with who they bring here? I'm not sure I'm the monster fighting type.

[Not real ones anyway.]

[The unease doesn't go without notice and Sarah immediately wonders if he's alright. Even with all that's happened to her, she still worries about everyone else.]

Plenty of... Huh. Are there a lot of kids here then?

Yeah there are. [Though with all the aliens, magical beings, and so on, there's no telling how many of the kids are really kids. He knows for sure there are some actual children, some close to her age.] I'm sorry you got brought into this mess.

[She smiles faintly and shrugs her shoulders.]

It's okay though, I guess. This place is all weird and stuff but back home was gettin' real scary. If things are paused back there like they said, then this is like a breather, yeah?

[Not to say the war here isn't serious or anything...]

[Getting scary. That seems to be the story with a lot of people, himself included. But he thinks it'd be tactless to press the issue.]

Yeah. [A beat.] Kind of like pressing the pause button on a game, or on a movie. So don't worry about it for now.

Yeah, something like that.

[He gets it. That's good. Sarah can't afford to think about it any other way just yet. It's too much to face right now.]

I'm tryin' not to. There's just so damn much going on in my head. This place is so weird.

Yeah, not every day you can say "I'm in a city on a living turtle". The freakiness of it will go down in a few days. [A small 'heh' comes out as he smiles a little.] If it helps, sometimes it's easy to forget you're even on a turtle.

[That gets a giggle.]

Oh man, I can just imagine the look on my teachers face if I walked into class all "Hi Miss! On the weekend I woke up in a damn bowl of water in my pajamas. By the way, the bowl was on a turtle and the Emperor was all unhappy and stuff!"

[He chuckles a little in return.]

She'll probably give a look like you're crazy. But truth is stranger than fiction most times. A shame there aren't any cameras here for you to take pics with.

Wait really? No cameras?

[That sucks!]

Huh. I guess there'll be a lot of things from home that aren't here. I didn't think of that.

[Welcome to his life. "His life" being from the year 2041 and everything here being crazy low-tech compared to what he's use to.]

Yeah, it's a real drag. [A shrug.] But ask around and see if someone has a camera, if you really want to use one. Some people have tech here that they don't mind lending out.

Where do they get it from? I mean if it's not from here, then from where?

Sometimes things just sort of wash up from our homes and you can find them. Like -- [he takes a moment to grab a family photo he owns, with him, his mom, dad and younger brother.] -- I found this pic of my family a while ago when the turtle stopped at land. You just gotta keep your eyes open.

[She leans a little closer, trying to see the picture better though... screen don't really work like that.]

...Whoa. That's really cool. How often does the turtle stop?

Not sure. It only stopped once since I came here a couple months ago, so not too often I guess.

[She nods and leans back.]

Hmm... Well, it's good to know anyway. When we stop next time, I'll be ready for it. Thanks for the heads up.
