[Midii payed close attention to the Network. Often. She saw the conversation passing publicly between individuals. Noticed the patterns occurring. Such as the recent increase in people disappearing. Possibly being sent home. Coincidently, starting from soon after the Emperor had been killed, except Midii didn't think it was a coincidence.]

[But that wasn't why she came to the Network that day.]

[She had a different question in mind. Something she had been wondering about more and more, with every conversation she carried here:]

What if...somebody doesn't want to go home?

Could they make us? Or would they let us stay?

[Hypothetically speaking, of course.]

[Only it wasn't hypothetical at all.]

They could try him on the network. He might answer if it was urgent enough. An assistant or deputy or someone, at least.

I already did. He hasn't responded so far.

[Which meant, in her completely hypothetical scenario, her "friends" weren't likely to receive a response, either.]

[Costigan hesitates a second before adding the encryption. He's not one to use it flippantly, but kids have always been his weakness.]

There might be other ways. You need to talk to him now or can you wait if I can get a message to him that it's important you stay until you talk?

[The sudden switch to an encryption--and a particularly strong one at that--was surprising. And more than a little exciting; she almost forgot the conversation at hand as her eyes tried to scan it over, in hopes of being able to learn something from it.]

[A moment later, though, she remembered herself. And replied accordingly.]

You could really do that? [She was grateful. But also slightly suspicious.] Why? Why help me like this?

[The general consensus tended to be 'because you're a kid', though Midii was always curious as to how people responded. Some would admit to the bias. Other had...their own reasons. It was amazing how much you could learn about a person when you knew their motives.]

[The encryption program is courtesy of Lincoln Lee and the Fringe Division. Costigan doesn't know jack about computers; he only knows some of the right people.]

[To the latter, he thinks only for a moment before giving a casual shrug.] You're a kid and you deserve better than this place. You're also not the only one who wants to stay here.

[Costigan's not entirely sure if he, himself, does, but he knows Eponine, Abigail, and others don't really have a home to return to.]

[She would have no way of knowing the latter, of course. See encryption. Make note of person using said encryption, regardless of where or how they got it.]

But I like Keelai.

It's way nicer here than anywhere I've ever been back home.

I'm sorry that it's better, but if you want to stay, you should be able to stay. I don't see why the Emperor would complain.

[The response was almost reflexive, not really taking into account the underlying notion that he really meant I'm sorry your world sucks worse than this. She was trying to focus too much on what she had now, less she end up losing it all one day.]

You never know until you ask. Sometimes, people say no just for the sake of saying no.

[She didn't expect him to recognize the name at all. Unless a member of her exceptionally small social circle happened to mention her in passing, which she couldn't think of a single reason for any of them to do.]

[There's no sign of familiarity. Costigan's never heard her name before that he can recall.]

Billy Costigan. I'll see what I can do.

[Good. She always felt better when people she didn't know didn't know her, either.]
