The fog is because of some kind of corruption in a bottle that leads to a magic land or something.
It's weird.
Buncha people went in there to fight it though so lets hope it goes away soon.

But seriously, at this point, you should be looking into keeping yourself afloat longterm. There are a lot of part-time jobs for foreigners around here, the kedan are pretty understanding about that. The fog is evil, I think? But we're trying to fix it.
