I hope those displaced from the Earth Sector fire have found a place to stay until the suites can be rebuilt or new homes. Fortunately, it looks as if the damage was contained before it spread too far. I think this situation is exactly the sort of thing a council for us ‘foreigners’ would be good for, and I mean in the sense of checking the damages, injuries, and helping people find temporary lodgings.

[Not necessarily hunting down perpetrators. And she has her suspicions on what might have started it, but that is not going out publicly. So on a different note!]

Though we can all understand the spoken word and each other here, I’ve found that’s not the case with the written. I’ve started making efforts to crack the kedan language, as it were, but there’s very little to help along these lines. Picking up words on signs is one thing, but a grasp of the grammar and structure is another.

Has anyone else been trying to do the same? I’m not sure much more will be possible unless we find the kedan version of a Rosetta Stone, to be honest.

As frustrating as it is that the written kedan language won't automatically translate, at least this gives us a way to talk that can't be eavesdropped on, assuming most people here are only fluent in a single language?

[It might be of note that while Steph is in Batgirl-thinking-about-things mode, her writing style is similar to how it was in her first conversation with Peggy. This is also her first time publicly using the console in her new suite.

You know, I'm not really a translator or anything - I can barely order fajitas in Spanish - but what if you dictated an oral passage to one of the kedan. I've had them do it for me. You could make your own Rosetta Stone that way, right?

[All in German:] It's a bit similar to the situation with Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. I'm well aware of what it means to learn a language, especially by immersion. But the symbols are not easily understood beyond discerning a sign next to a park meaning "park" and when the kedan speak, it's translated automatically.

Mandarin, I assume. I don't speak it.

Working out the Kedan's language -- it's interesting that you've mentioned that. It isn't quite like anything I've seen before and trust me, I've seen a lot. But I've picked up words too and my mind's been automatically trying to figure out the breakdown. I'd be willing to help, if you'd want?

I'd appreciate that, actually. Sometimes working with someone can aid the process along, especially if you've seen as much as you say. It's not similar to anything I've run across back home.

I've been trying to decipher the kedan language, but I'm afraid I haven't made much progress. Maybe if we could find a kedan willing to write down specific phrases, make our own Rosetta Stone... Of course, that would require trusting them to write down exactly what we ask them to.

Yes, that's been a concern of mine as well. I'm sure some of the kedan are willing, but there's still a chance whomever asked might lie. And a mistake early on would ruin the entire understanding of the written language. I'm not sure I'm willing to risk that with the effort.
