That makes about a dozen in the last month. Anyone else worried about how many people are disappearing? No, why bother? It's not like we get along here and we're all just as fucked as they were anyway, right?

As someone who's been in many teams before, I assure you that is not true in the least. Sometimes people just need a little- push, a little something to bring them together. The right words of encouragement. Which weren't what you just said, by the way.

What were you exactly trying to accomplish? Apart from sounding like a petulant child because you happen to have lost someone? You aren't the only one who has, by the way.

Jim Hammond. And I am not sure how drunk you are so I can't give you an opinion on the matter. [Meaning, maybe, that he got the asshole part down? Jim does look less tense after Costigan seems to be less defensive, but he isn't a man to sugarcoat things.]

And no, I don't. I was- am friends with a man... He always knows the right things to say. Always. It's like giving motivational speeches is his superpower. But I was always just the field technician of the team. That, or the heavy hitter.

[Good. Finally someone buys him as an asshole.]

I'm not big on all that superpower bullshit anyway. Or politics. [He shifts his weight to sit back in the chair.] Sounds like he's not here, so I doubt that will help us much. Any other ideas?

[A bit of a shrug] Unless 'not diminishing people's morale by subtly insulting them' counts, I'm afraid I don't. We have a goal, information, we know about the consequences.

I'm actually simply wondering what makes you think we aren't working on it.

I didn't say people aren't working on the fight. I suggested they aren't doing shit about people disappearing, because we can't.

I think you're wrong on both accounts. There are actually people investigating it, and nothing we know about it says we cannot do anything about it. It's magic, and we have magicians here. It has to follow a pattern, and we have smart people in here to find it.

There is plenty of things we can do about it.

Bullshit. No one here knows the right magic. You might be able to find a pattern, sure, but it doesn't do any good if you can't change it or control it.

So we seek a way to control it. We know Foreigner magic and Kedan magic mix up, I was told a spell somehow backfired. We might not know how they do, it might be unpredictable, but it's a place to start.

And I'm sure there's more, I haven't even been here long enough to come up with more variables.

Look, Hammond. You're new and you're eager to make a name for yourself. It's not rocket science. I've been here over a year and you know what's changed? The old Emperor's dead and more people are leaving than arriving now.. and yeah, that worries me. It's fucking worrisome.

You're right on a lot of things- I'm new, and things are looking more and more worrying. It's hard to imagine how they might get better.

But I do not want to make a name for myself. I had one, back at home- or did, when I was born because the circumstances of my creation are a bit weird. And I'd rather stay in the nice, comfortable anonymity.

What is your problem with that, exactly? Perhaps I can help. [Or perhaps he will decide to stop talking with someone who has a grudge against man-made people. He has no trouble with people having issues with superpowers, it's their own choice and he'd be scared if he was in their position as well.
