[ Jack has mostly been flying under the radar during the past month, keeping to himself. Though he's worked regular shifts at the Fishing Shop and at the Welcome Center, when he wasn't there he was often nowhere at all, away from the city. He doesn't intend to address the recent exodus of people from the city, even though he's taken many of them like punches to the gut. Instead he keeps his tone light, and focuses on something that almost never fails to put some lightness back into him. ]

So fun fact: turns out the kedan have something a lot like "Take Your Kids To Work Day" from back home and there's a group that still need some volunteers. Anyone want to help out some kids and let them shadow you for a day?

Guilty as charged. Though, she requested me so I can't take all the blame.

[She leaned forward a bit, resting her arms against the top of the console desk.]

How's she doing, by the way? I haven't seen her in a while.

Corele's doing good. Just started a new grade in school. They roll over their school years with the new year, not in the fall. They never had the whole scheduling that originally coincided with harvest, so...

[Right, right. Something something kids in the old days used to have summers off so that they could help their parents work the fields.]

How does that work with vacations, though? Do they still get those three months' break when its nice out?

[ Sometimes Jack forgets that's not common knowledge anymore. ]

They get a part of May and a month off in October. Not sure why they pick those months but whatever works for them.

So, shall I sign you up?

I'll think about it.

[It wasn't quite a 'no', but she wasn't in any hurry to say yes, either. For one, Jack had already claimed her favorite little kedan. There weren't too many others she was willing to be left alone with for an entire day. Not to mention, her work wasn't exactly bitty-friendly. Too many fragile items. Within reach.]

I wouldn't mind being able to have May off every year. [Because of Birthday Reasons.] Though I'm not sure it's worth getting to sacrifice my summer beach time.

[...no offense, Jack. She loved the cold ~~in more ways than one~~, but she also loved being able to tan.]

All right.

[ Jack dips his head, nodding. He knows she isn't totally comfortable around the children (though he can't for the life of him figure out why, she needs to trust herself more) so he won't push. ]

You suppose there'll be another beach party this year?

[She was grateful for the change of subject.]

I kind of hope so. The one last year was nice.

[Between the music, the festivities, the food...getting to curl up by the fires...]

If there's not, we could always host one ourselves. Assuming you're up for it.

Yeah, it was... it brightened a lot of people's spirits at the time. That's something we could all use around here lately. Probably before summer, but maybe something else will come up.

[ He shrugged a little when she suggested that they host it. ]

We'll see what the summer brings.

[Brightening spirits didn't even begin to describe it. Even she and Dick had been able to take the night off and just be themselves around each other. Something that, even after they'd gotten together, had been a precious rarity.]

[He was gone now, but the memory still brought a warm smile to her face, as if she were sitting in front of the fires ~~roasting~~ burning all the marshmallows right there.]

Well...there's always next month. We could celebrate my sweet sixteen on the beach.

[It seemed as good of an excuse as any.]

[ Jack remembered; he had watched them quietly. ]

Ah-ha, and this year I'll remember that jewelry is inappropriate.

I wouldn't say that.

Technically, the last present I gave you was jewelry, wasn't it?

[Which she more than occasionally wore herself. But, you know. It was the thought that counted?]

That's a special case.

But I'll have to make it something memorable, being your sixteenth and all.

[~~A Special Case for a Special Snowflake~~ Okay, no, that was true. But her point was still valid in her mind.]

I can't wait.

And be sure to say 'hi' to Corele for me, alright? Unless I happen to catch you two during your shift.

I will. I'm sure she'll appreciate that you remembered her.

What can I say?

She left quite the impression on me last time.

She has that effect.

I think she got it from you.

[Playful. Though, after a moment to let that sink in, she sat back and moved to stretch.]

[The offer wasn't limited to just today, but she figured the message had gotten across well enough.]

Sounds like fun. Just try not to get me in too much trouble with the boss. I do have to get some work done.

Guess that's a risk I'll have to take.
