Ladies and gentlemen of Keelai, I have a very important announcement to make. Today, April the eighth, marks a momentous occasion in history. A day to be spoken of in legend and myth and song, when the stars and planets align, and rainbows and puppies spontaneously appear.

I am eighteen.

You are looking at an official man, everybody. It is my birthday, hosanna hosanna, hallelujah and so on.

Since Amazon gift registries aren't a thing here, I'll be happy to provide a written list of acceptable tributes and gifts, form an orderly line if you please, no shoving.

That's right. It's in July...though it's a little strange since it was summer at home when arrived, but not here.

Oh, I get you. I came from September in my timeline, but it was July here. So...technically I turned eighteen two months ago.

Maybe. Or maybe I'm supposed to have a birthday two months ahead?

I have run out of books to read, honestly. And so has Derek. Don't tell him I told you this, but when he doesn't have a book, he gets even grumpier than usual.

Derek is making me a cake even as we speak. He says it's the Kedan equivalent of chocolate. Which, hot damn, the best. And I think tonight is dinner with him, too. But tomorrow? I'm all for extending my birthday out another twenty-four hours.

Yup. You can vote and buy cigarettes (which, ew) at eighteen, and buy alcohol at twenty one.

You'll notice I don't really follow that law here.

Yup. It's pretty solidly an American thing, too. Even other countries back home have looser alcohol laws.
