it seems to me that if the mechanists have organized themselves, that those engaged in the more magical arts should do so likewise, to that end, I would like to invite such individuals to join me in three days to discuss such a working.

That is, if I can locate a gathering place.

Uh... "engaged"? [There's a teenage boy with unkempt hair squinting back at the recording, and nothing about the uncertain look on his face suggests a born researcher, because he isn't one. On the other hand, if he asks no questions, he'll get no answers.] Is that something else that's been ongoing? First I've heard of it.

Not formally, but I have been interested in the study myself, and am seeking new directions.

Oh, so it's like a study group... [He looks a little disappointed. Not the kind of thing that his only meaningful ability is cut out for, then. Sure, he'd more or less guessed from the sound of it, but...] Studying what, though? Not how to magic everyone home?

A research group. Study implies the answer exists. And, that is one of the problems to which we could imply ourselves.

[He cocks his head. Come on, lady, it was close enough...] Well - there's gotta be some answer to at least that one, right? Even if the answer's just "nope".

There is an answer, but I believe it died with those who cast the spell, so we shall have to discover it anew.

That... kinda makes it sound like you just don't know where to start. [Eh, there'd only been an off chance someone like him could help with it anyway.]

Well, I am a bit uncertain on the matter.

[Sounds about right. He clicks his tongue.] Well, uh... good luck, I guess? ...But huh, I wonder if there's really no one who isn't.

Perhaps someone who is familiar with gates between worlds.

I dunno... how much would that help? I mean, if there's... [He waves vaguely.] "different kinds" of worlds like people were saying, there's gotta be different kinds of gates too, right? We've even got stuff like that where I'm from.

There are portals to Dreaming, which can be constructed. Or could in the past. And once there were links to Death itself, but those gates were closed.

What is a tee-vee? Is it some manner of gateway?

[Portals to... whuh? Blinking a couple of times, he latches onto the part he understood.] Oh, you don't have TV where you're from either? So you're from somewhere like here?

At least in the absence of these tee-vees.

Right... [A tiny cough.] Well, they're not normally gateways to anything. If you didn't already have the power, you'd just hit your head. I dunno, I guess something like that could be true here, too? Like, the reason nobody's found the way back yet is just that the right person didn't arrive here yet? ...Kinda depressing, though.

"Then it is an innate ability, not one learned?" Tazendra had to consider that. She was used to the idea that sorcery was just a set of knowledge and skills. Certainly talent played a role, but even the initial link was granted on citizenship.

Uh, here or back home? Well, you could get nitpicky if you wanted, but... Man, if I knew what it was here, I'd know what we should be doing.

Perhaps 'back home', since we have kept our respective talents.

[Just below the screen, he drums his fingers.] Uh... huh. No, all I meant was, having someone give you a power's gotta be different than just learning it somehow... I guess. Maybe there's something totally different you haven't thought of either.

And if someone gave you the ability to use that power, rather than the power itself?

Yeah! That could be really fun! We could learn about how all of our magics are different, and then we can demonstrate how awesome we can work together!

Exactly so. In my own world, until recently, I knew only how sorcery worked. Which is enough for a lifetime, but I have found it productive to collaborate with witches.

[Tazendra was egocentric enough that she considered her form of magic superior, and witchcraft as full of superstition, but she at least was willing to acknowledge that for some jobs, it was quite useful, and that there was obviously something under all the superstition.]

Is there exactly a difference between the two types of magic? I mean, I know some people prefer the term witch or sorcerer for random reasons, but the two of them from my world cast the same magic.

There is every difference. Witchcraft is an application of psychic phenomena, powered by the witch, or witches -- as they can share a spell. Sorcery is powered by amorphia, a material that exists on my world, and any psychic ability is to draw and shape the power.

Wait... psychic? You mean like reading people's minds and whatnot? That's how magic works in your world???

[There's a bit of a dubiousness because clearly that's not what Genis is familiar with at all, and it shows. However, there's still some benefit of the doubt.]

Though it sounds like just a technical difference really, based upon where the power is coming from.

I assure you, it is not. There are things impossible to do with witchcraft, and parts of witchcraft that are... difficult... to duplicate with sorcery.

The reading of minds is one thing that is difficult. Minds are complex.

Well, most minds are complex. Some of them are pretty simple if you ask me.

[Look, Genis is making a joke. It's that cute.]

But I guess there must be differences between them. I mean, I wouldn't even know where to start with reading someone's mind. I'm trying to even think which of the eight elements that would even fall under.

How, eight elements?

It's pretty simple. There are four pairs of bipolar elements: light and darkness, fire and ice, wind and earth, and water and lightning.

And what of things that are none of those eight?

[Hmm...]

Raine's got a much better handle on mana theory than I do, but there are two spells that I have that don't fall under some combination of the eight elements. I mean, I don't know how they actually work, just that I can transmute mana into energy, I guess? Mana's just magical potential, but it's also inside every living thing.

Then it is a sort of psychic energy?

[Tazendra's used to getting her spell energy from channeling, not from within.]

Eh... I don't think so; it doesn't quite feel right. I mean, if you think a Gravity Well or a Meteor Storm sounds like psychic energy, then fine, but...

What do those do?

Well, Gravity Well kind of holds people firmly in place so they can't move for a few seconds. Meteor Storm... well, I'm sure you can guess that one.

IN truth, I cannot.

[The skies of Tazendra's home are perpetually overcast; if rocks fall from space, and they might, they are not connected with meteors]

It brings down meteors. Like giant rocks from the sky. And they smash all of my enemies to bits.

That is useful! But why bring rocks from the skies when there are fine rocks in the ground?

Well, I've got other spells that do that too. Besides, making rocks fall from the sky is more fun?

I cannot argue with that reasoning!
