[As always, Aya was certain to greet the public network with a pleasant smile and gentle tone:]
Greetings.
For those of you who are not currently aware, I am Aya. For some time now, I have resided within the city of Keelai attempting to adapt to the local technology. It has proven...an interesting challenge.
[The most diplomatic way to put it; well aware that anybody could see this, she did not want to risk causing further offense by implying any inferiority.]
Currently, I am willing to offer my services as an instructor in the art of Encryption. Such lessons are being offered at an unoccupied conference room at the local Hotel, and are purely theoretical at this time. Though I recognize that current Network systems are not compatible with these higher-level programs, as they once were, I do believe it is a necessary skill for any and all individuals who wish to better themselves in advancing their scientific knowledge.
Besides that, I do believe it will...as you say...come in handy, as it has in the past.
[A small smile to herself, far more proud of the utilization of colloquialisms than she probably should be.]
[It fades a moment later, however, as one last thought occurred to her.]
Unfortunately, I have yet to determine the precise cause and rationale behind the Console's self-destruct system--[As Aya referred to it as, despite there being no actual explosions or harm to anyone else involved]--and thus, am not able to properly interface with its inner workings to utilize its theoretical maximum potential. To do so would be potentially...dangerous, for one such as myself.
I am still working on it.

Self-destruct system? Do you mean these things can blow up??
No.
Self-destruction occurs at the cellular level, and involves a sudden liquefaction process. No harm is caused to anyone or anything besides the console itself. According to my sources, the resultant substance is not even harmful.
[He's not even sure if that's a letdown or a relief.]
I mean, whenever we've activated the self-destruct sequences in the Human Ranches, they always blew up and made a huge fireworks display.
[Perhaps a little bit of an exaggeration with the fireworks, but still, that's what he's referring to.]
So the consoles just turn into a liquid goo? [Hmm.] What causes that? You know, so I don't accidentally turn one into goo.
[
Or so that he can turn one into goo.][video]
The precise circumstances are currently unknown to be. However, I believe it is a failsafe that activates when one attempts to interfere with the console's systems. Any methods of outer component removal or even routine interfacing will trigger the process.
And hey, who you calling small?]Huh. So attempting to remove any piece of the console will cause it. [Yes, there's a small grin at that.] So would that make the console some sort of biotechnological device?
[Not that he actually knows what biotechnology is. But it's at least the right prefix to substitute into magitechnology to get the desired meaning.]
Someone whose height is noticeably shorter than hers.]Precisely.
It is a rather unique combination of organic and inorganic components, though I do believe they are primarily outwardly physical, rather than internal. At least, I have not yet found a means to communicate with them directly.
[Because of course she would have tried.]
Huh. Pretty weird stuff.
[Yeah, he didn't do anything at all. Nope. Not at all. Angel feathers all around him, ayup.]
Yeah, I can see why you wouldn't want to interface with that sort of thing.
May I ask why your response was significantly delayed?
[What did you do?]
[But never mind that question. That's not a fun question. Let's ask a different one.]
So is it possible to build a console without those safety devices in the first place?
No.
[See?]
Based on their unique nature, I would suggest that at least part of the consoles are grown, not built. The failsafe mechanism could just as easily be a part of their organic nature as their inorganic.
[Yeah, Genis is going to groan at that.]
I guess if that's the case then it all makes sense why they don't explode so much as fall apart.
Precisely.
Not every organic creature is created with their own internal explosive device. None that I have personally encountered, at least.

[not here]
no subject
'For one such as'...okay, wait. How exactly are you trying to interface with the consoles?
no subject
Are you requesting a detailed analysis of the procedure itself? Or are you simply unfamiliar with the terminology?
so my [video] tag ran away somewhere (???) but yeah
[Hiro's taken aback for a second, but recovers quickly enough to shake his head and wave his hands. No, that's not what he meant.]
I know how interfacing works, I just - how would that be dangerous? Besides getting goo on your shoes, I mean.
I do not have shoes.
[That being said...]
Interfacing with the consoles would require me to upload both my energy and consciousness into the network mainframe itself. I have done so in the past, with varying degrees of success--[She was stopped in her tracks by the yellow crystals, only to succeed to the point where she was able to enter another's mind and accessed memories through the device worn on his head.]--but, as it has been proven that any major source of external tampering would result in a total biotechnical liquefaction, I cannot guarantee that I would have a means to escape in time to avoid being destroyed as well.
[Hiro frowns. Color him confused, but as he works through what information he can gather from what she's telling him, he slowly begins to realize what it all points to and a vaguely self-satisfied grin flits across his face.]
Okay, now I get it. You're an AI. [...Cool. A beat.] Isn't there any way for you to make a backup of your systems and programming somewhere? Then you wouldn't have to worry about the thing going gooey on you. I know this place is super backwards, but they have to have something.
[Still...the young human's reaction was far from the worst that she had ever encountered, although she was quick to correct him in an area he was (understandably) mistaken in:]
I can no more create a precise copy of myself than any other living being.
Perhaps my memories and databanks may be archived for future access...but any being that contains them would not possess my consciousness, or my soul. It would not be me.
More frowning. And a brow knit tightly in confusion.]
Are you saying you're not an AI?
[If one were to require the specifics. She did occasionally refer to herself as an AI, and in fact--for the reason referenced--took no offense when others labeled her as such.]
[w e l l then again maybe where she comes from it does -]
Where did you get yours from?
oh]
Okay, you win. I don't know.
I do. [And, just to further emphasize her point...] You were born with it. As I was.
