Monday 7/27:
Drizzle in the morning, partial cloud cover and mist in the afternoon. Weather remains oppressively muggy into the evening.

Tuesday 7/28
Clear morning, humidity high. Afternoon saw brief showers and continued to be hot and humid.

Wednesday 7/29
Humidity cleared a bit around mid afternoon, though the heat continues.

Thursday 7/30
Clear skies though the wind appears to have picked up – somewhat of a respite from the constant heat that remains high from dawn till dusk.

Friday 7/31
Low humidity and constant heat. Winds appear to be blowing from the east now. Odd.

Saturday 8/1
Temperatures have broke into triple digits and the winds shift direction constantly. Though the breezes are welcome, this is an odd pattern.

Sunday 8/2
Sweltering hot and very dry. I don't think these begonias are going to make it without some aid.

Ah, yes. To make this a bit less dry, I've decided to add some gardening tips. So three good ones today.

Grind eggshells into a powder when using them for compost. It makes the calcium much easier for the plants to absorb.
A great way for starting off a seedling is to put it in a hollowed out citrus peel (such as from an orange or lemon), fill it in with soil and then plant it. The peel will compost nicely, giving the seedling an excellent start. Remember to poke holes in the peel for proper drainage.

A note: Eggshells make excellent starter pots as well for seedlings when the weather doesn't permit outdoor growth. The extra calcium works wonders for nourishing our small friends.

You can grow roses from trimmings. A marvelous way to do this is to stick the trimming into a potato and plant it.
And a bonus tip for farmers among us, since I noted squash and gourds are major crops. The weather has been hot and dry for the past few days and rain has been infrequent at best. One of the gentlemen at my gardening club uses a method where a pot filled with holes is planted in the center of the garden and filled with water. This makes it easier for the water to reach the deeper roots from squash plants and it isn't wasted by evaporating in the heat.

I don't know. What are your areas of expertise?

Ah. Well, I've traveled extensively, mostly through Europe and the east coast of the United States, though I spent some time in Japan as well. ...I doubt that tourist attractions from Earth would prove remotely relevant here, however, except for a few.

Hmmm... aside from horticulture, I'm well versed in art and music history. I'm decent at chess and Prosfair, and I could give some tips on hand to hand combat and self-defense. Do any of those spark an interest?

[Admittedly, when she'd first asked, she hadn't expected quite a selection to choose from. Some of the were even familiar to her. The hand to hand combat and self-defense, in particular, she filed away for a later time. Things like that were better discussed in person. But there was one other topic he brought up that piqued her interest most:]

What parts of Europe?

I'm originally from Germany, but I've been all about. France, Norway, Spain, Italy, and the U.K. are the places I spent the most time. Mostly on work.

[Her smile widened. Clearly, he said something that pleased her greatly.]

My dad was from Italy. Born and raised.

I wonder if it's the same where you come from as it was in our world.

It's a possibility. Much of my time was spent in Rome. The whole city is absolutely full of history. I'd go back in a second if I could.

[She almost responded in kind...except that wasn't entirely true. Going back to Italy would require going back home. Leaving Keelai. She'd been giving the option before and declined. Her reasons were still in play now.]

What would you say your favorite part was?

[He smiles, almost wistfully.]

Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. Hearing music there... it was an experience.

[She tried to picture the building in her mind. But it had been long enough ago that, of all the place she had gone to see, it didn't particularly stick out.]

I'm not sure my dad would have tried to take me to any operas when I was little. Knowing me, I wouldn't have sat still for too long.

Ah, well, if you ever have the chance, it's well worth the trouble. What did you like best about Rome?

The best best? ...the gelato.

[What? She did admit to being young when she was there last.]

I certainly can't fault you there. It was always a refreshing treat.

Mmhmm.

[Even now, her mouth watered just thinking about it. Maybe she should look into seeing if some of the locals sold any. Sure, they had sorta-ice cream and sorta-gelato, but someone in the food industry must have come close to that recipe of perfection.]

It was the best. Dad and I would sit on the steps and watch the birds and the people walking by as we ate from our cups. We'd each get a different flavor, too, so we could share with each other.

You seem to have very fond memories of that time. Did you get to explore any of the ruins when you were younger?

Yeah. We did.

We had to take the same tours as all the other tourists, but I remember thinking they were all pretty cool. I mean, where else in the world can you walk around a giant city and have an ancient ruin sneak up on you the moment you turn around the corner?

Oh, quite a number of cities are rich with history and ruins. It's part of the appeal of traveling, I suppose. To be there, to experience those centuries vicariously...

Apologies- it sounds a bit foolish now that I say it aloud.

But that's alright. I've heard and seen way weirder things in my life than the idea of simultaneously living in different centuries.

Aha... I didn't mean literally, though I do know of a number of people with those sorts of abilities. Some manner of ESP - very handy when dealing with crimes as well.

[Klaus doesn't sound like he'd be surprised if she was.]

Amazing- is it one in our solar system, or another from further away?

[Huh. People don't always automatically assume she was being serious whenever she said that.]

Mars, actually. [Practically right next door.]

[Let's just say Klaus is at a stage in his life where nothing will surprise him. Like. At all.]

To think somewhere so close! What is her home like? What I've seen of the Rover pictures, Mars seems rather desolate.

No idea.

Never been. We met on Earth. And...I only knew her for a few months before I was brought here, anyway.

[Sometimes, it was still weird to think that she had literally been in Keelai longer than she had known the entire Team. Put together.]
